'14 TN DB Todd Kelly Jr. (UT Signee 2/5/14)

10. DB TODD KELLY, KNOXVILLE (TENN.) WEBB SCHOOL
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Kelly is not as fluid as his colleagues in the East defensive backfield, but he has such a high football IQ that he is always in position to make plays. While Kelly is likely a strong safety at the college level, he has played a lot of centerfield this week and between his anticipating and break on the football has broken up a number of passes between the hashes and closer to the boundaries. He is not going turn and run with receivers as well as others, but he can close on plays in front of him in a hurry.

I don't know football, but do FS turn and run often? I thought their job was keeping everything in front of them?

SS is usually an extension of help in run defense. They line up on the strong side, of course. Most of the time, they'll cover the TE in coverage.

I played FS in HS. They are the coverage safety. Basically your last line of defense in HS. They help CBs cover deep routes and their main responsibility is to not let any WRs get behind them. Keep everything in front of you.

TKJr is a natural SS. He's a very good tackler and will be a physical presence in the defensive backfield. His speed is not elite despite what his highlight tape looks like but he's plenty fast enough to play SS. High football IQ is something that he also brings to the table.

TK2 weighed in at 188 lbs and just under 6' tall this week. Isn't that a bit small for a strong safety? I don't know about these reports of "stiff hips," but i think his straight-line speed and exceptional ball skills would be great at free safety.

Don't forget that free safeties are usually the communicators in the defensive backfield. I'd feel comfortable trusting a kid with a 4.0 GPA serving as the last line of defense.

He's a little bigger than EB was as a freshman. I really think TKJr is better suited at SS. We need someone at FS who can really run and make up ground over the top.

Another prospect that played his high school ball against subpar competition, Kelly is adjusting nicely and had a good day on Thursday. Kelly may struggle with some of the quicker slot wide receivers in coverage but he is very capable of locking down tight ends and running backs in coverage and he showed off that ability on several occasions Thursday, flashing some good range in the process as well.

EB played at 5'11 and topped out at 210.

I hate to count on a true Freshman who isn't an EE to be a major contributor their first year, but if TK isn't starting over McNeil by midseason, I'll be disappointed.

Sounds like a great future spokesman for the program. Glad to have him.
