Looking at the 2014 recruiting class #'s for the top 50 classes, 31 of 50 schools took less than 25 kids meaning they did NOT lose/process the max # of kids off their roster to make room for new talent. Not all schools will process their roster so they can take a full class.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that most of those 31 didn't have 4 losing seasons in a row with a few new head coaches along the way. When the depth is where it needs to be UT will also only take ~20 recruits a cycle.

Can someone for the sake of clarity show where we stand right now with the numbers? There's a lot of variables & I know a lot can change between now and this time next year. So let's say assuming nothing changes how many can we sign for the 2015 class?

Also do December graduates free up space? When does a player actually have to leave by to free up a scholarship?

why are so many that worried about numbers that your stressing over it a year in advance? it will work out. just like it did this year.

Ok, so more than I thought. A few of those do look to be walk-ons though and would not actually free up a spot. Do we lose/process double that many this year to be able to take a full class of 25 in 2015? I doubt it.

There will definitely be more this year. There are always more the second year for a staff because the first year, especially in our case, you have to hang in to more people due to depth issues.

These are the SRs on the roster. There are several who I don't think are on scholarship.

*-Scholarship? These I'm not sure of.

Exactly! Can't wait till we are there as well. It's totally different not taking a full class because you don't need to and/or don't want to, to save the spots for next year. It lets you be much more selective in who you take and that why they haven't had to cut and take full classes.

so i am counting 12 seniors - i think it is highly likely pearson is a 1 and done due to his age - so 13 would likely open up naturally

I think there are several guys who once the newbies get on campus will not like where they are on the depth chart so you will see several departures

I think we sign very close to 25 next year - jmo

Attrition happens every year. We still have 2 Dooley classes mixed in with Jones' classes. We will recruit over 20 next year when the dust settles.

I know OCI had a scholly chart at one time broken down by position but I think it was from 2013 - I would be interested in seeing what the current scholly chart looks like once we add in the newcomers

Yea, LV's example is not apples-for-apples. How many of those top 50 classes had a first or second year coach with a talent-depleted roster? If you carve out that group, I bet their roster moves would look VERY similar to what Butch is doing.

13 if Pearson leaves.
-2 for Dews and Robertson going on ship between now and 2015.

11 looks to be the current # to me. 10 if Pearson returns as a SR.

Getting from 10-11 to "close" to 25 is a lot of current Vols hitting the door.

I bet the final number is 20 before the dust settles. Stuff happens.

As long as kids who do things right are not "processed" I have no issue with it. Then the negative recruiting aspect does not come into play. How many did we lose this year? I honestly don't recall anymore than 3-4. It is that reason I have a hard time seeing how 12-14 move on before next year.

Well--CBJ and staff were hired to get the FB program back to competing for SEC and NCs. It is their stewardship to get the most from scholarship players--part of that responsibility is to choose not to renew scholarships for players. It's not a pleasant job--but facts are--CDD is the one who hasn't left them any choice by recruiting sub-par SEC talent that needs to be "processed" as you say.

I do believe that CBJ and his staff will not take this part of it lightly--and would do everything to help players find a place to be productive. I can understand how painful it would be for a player.

However, athletic scholarships are renewed yearly--just like my scholarship was when I went to school. I had to meet a standard to keep my scholly--and so do these guys.

In athletics--a kid could do everything right and still not be good enough for the 2-deep. Some guys CDD recruited will need to be let go to make room for CBJ's recruits. It's just a fact...:salute:

i was counting dews as one of the ones that will be in the 20-25 we get next year since he will count toward that class

EDIT...just took a quick look at the roster - not too hard to find 10-13 guys that will be RSFR or higher and won't be in the 2 deep

I understand and think Coleman is a VFL as well. The coaches rely on these kids to keep their job. If they can find a more talented kid, they'll ask the less talented kid to look around, provided we have the depth. It's a business at the end of the day

Coleman isn't a kid Butch recruited either. So kinda doesn't owe him a thing if it came up. Vincent Dallas(who I actually would've kept) was asked to leave so I have no doubt others that are worse players will too. I hope we take 25+ if possible. I want to win forget all these sob stories. If you don't produce you're replaced at elite programs. 800 wins classifies you as a traditional elite program. Time to do our part. :)

BB, my dude. That's exactly what I was trying to say

I would like to recommend LebVol as the primary coaching target for the new HC opening at Bless-Your-Heart U in the Big Equality Conference.
