I watched Derek play throughout high school at BA. He's one of the nicest gentleman you would ever meet off the field. Soft spoken and extremely polite. Put him on the field and it's like flipping a switch. He'll hit your mother in the mouth if she's on the other team and won't think twice about it. He has a mean and nasty streak between the lines. It's amazing to see. I don't know how long it will take him to adjust and be SEC ready but he is an extremely hard worker so I doubt it's very long and when he does adjust we will all be glad he's a Vol.

Played with a guy like that myself. Nicest guy off the field and totally feared on the field.

Many of Tennessee’s highly touted 2014 signees have been ahead of the curve in the “63” area, but perhaps none have been as impressive as defensive end*Derek Barnett. His name continues to emerge in interviews with players and coaches, and it came up a lot Thursday.

“Barnett came in, and he’s just … he’s the epitome of ’63’,” senior offensive tackle*Jacob Gilliam*said. “That kid comes in, rushes the passer, gets off (his blocker), chases the ball down. He is running to the ball every single play, he’s giving us good moves off the edge. And he’s got a good upside.”

Jones went a few steps beyond that, saying Barnett —*along with fellow freshman defensive end and former Top247 prospect*Dewayne Hendrix*— has already made Tennessee’s defensive line better.

“Another individual that’s upped the level of everyone’s play has been*Derek Barnett,” Jones said. “Derek Barnetthas had a tremendous camp. His effort (has been great). He made one of the best plays I’ve seen in a long time two days in practice. He caught, chased*Devrin Young*down the sideline about 30 yards running to the football. It’s been great to see.

“Derek Barnett*has elevated the defensive line play. He’s one of the individuals that sticks out

You can see it in his highlight film from HS. He quickly became one of the players I wanted badly and now he will be one of my players on the field.

He was relegated to DT wayyy to early on this board...probably due to need...but some people forget that he was highly considered at TE just a year ago...you can use speed at DE...I hear.

Barnett and Hendrix give UT size at end they haven't had in a while. Remember the havok Sean Ellis use to cause? Considering UT already has some good speed rush guys in Between and Maggitt, they can do a lot of situational subbing and get a lot of productivity. It would be good to have the luxury of red shirting guys like Henderson and Johnson. Just wondering how this changes their DE recruiting. They seem pretty stocked at the position with the recruits on board this year.

You're never stocked in the SEC you always must keep reloading.

So let's get this straight Butch has DEs that are faster than the CBs Dooley lined up???? True and ridiculous at the same time. :)

I agree we are pretty stocked with guys in the SDE mold. This maybe why Dylan Jackson is looking around and why Kyle Phillips hasn't pulled the trigger yet. It's a good problem to have though.

Nice to have the luxury to RS both

Oh I agree 100%. But I don't think red shirting is as appealing as coming in an plying straight away to some of these kids. Especially with our troubles the last few years. But yeah if this staff gets KP and keeps DJ, we will have something special across the defensive front. Even if we don't get those guys we are looking pretty good.

There are no good DEs at Bama, LSU and Stanford. Probably would play right away at those places.

Or not.

Red shirting while going 5-6 is a little different than red shirting while winning a national title. Your red shirt is justified if you win championships IMO.

All those schools still redshirt a lot of players.
I think Barnett and Hendrix demonstrate that the previous talent at end was lacking. I think the D is more effective if you can rotate Maggitt and Vereen on one side, keeping a fresh pass rush all game. And then have the luxury of working Barnett and Hendrix in with another. They need one of the returning players to step up. Vickers, Miller, Lewis. Those guys need to start showing something, or they gonna get passed up.
