'14 TN RB/DB Daryl Rollins

A kid like Swafford who has a pick 6 and a blocked punt return TD against the 2 best teams in the SEC East as a true freshman? Yep, makes no sense.

So how does one compare a SEC player to a high school player ? Doesn't make sense braj .

My point for you is how does swafford earn the grey shirt but Rollins doesn't . I get it , the staff doesn't like him. But it's not crazy to think they would take a guy like Rollins since they took Swafford . Enough logic ?

I made a comment on the Scott thread about this. I said I didn't understand the love for Scott when this kid is right here under our nose. They're the same size and Rollins (on paper) is a little faster. Another poster -- don't recall who -- told me to go look at the film for both players side-by-side.

I did. The difference is daylight and dark. Scott has ridiculous moves. You never see it in the Rollins video. I get it.

I'll leave the evaluation to the coaches. :)

:hi:

Speed is not everything in talent evaluation. Coaches look at their hip flexibility, agility, gait, lateral quickness, etc.

SEC football is full of kids who can run fast. Leonard Scott was the fastest straightline runner in the SEC and yet, he was not a game changer.

That's what's so perplexing about Rollins-Davis' recruitment. He's more than just fast, he's also incredibly quick, agile & explosive as he's demonstrated both on the field and at last spring's Nike SPARQ Combine in Atlanta.

Out of nearly 17,000 athletes who participated in the 13 combines this year, Rollins-Davis recorded the 8th-best 40 time, the 10th-best pro agility shuttle time and he demonstrated his explosiveness w/ a 35.3" vertical jump. And this was done in the worst weather of any of the combines, with temps in the 30s and snow flurries.

None of what you mentioned translates into SEC level player.

Compare film of Rollins to Derrell Scott and you will see the difference. Upper body control and ability to make people miss can't be measured on a stop watch.

They saw Swafford as a player and wanted him at Tennessee. Rollins, perhaps not that high on him. Enough logic? You won't find the real answer here so stop *****ing and moaning.

Coaches had the kid in camp. With no offer, I would guess they did not see what they needed to see from him. I think their plan was to give him a shot at CB, and he just did not fit the bill.

They had him at camp as a DB IIRC. that right there could be the issue. Kids is best with the ball in his hands.

Saw an incredible stat on Rollins-Davis' QB, Penny Smith, from the Knoxville News-Sentinel's Jesse Smithey last night. Smith has the same number of TD passes this year (14) as he does incomplete passes.

I believe (I wasn't there) from what I read that he was with the running backs and they pulled him out to work with DB's. That would lead me to believe that they loved the speed but he was not a fit as a UT running back; so they tried him at DB. And that wasn't a fit either.

Local kid.. Put up great numbers at regional sparq combine. 2013 State Champion , Fulton Ranked Nationally, TN on the RISE, he may not jump out at u while watching his film , but numbers don't lie. He may not get an SEC offer at all. But who doesn't enjoy the under dog story? Good Luck Rollins

Agree 100%.

They saw the athleticism at RB, but possibly not the size.

Moved him to where they thought his size would match up favorably in the SEC, but didn't see the skill set needed to perform at a high level.

Article On Rivals Fulton Top Team IN State Top 100 In Country..

SCORING AT WILL

For the 27th consecutive drive -- and to conclude the 74-0 victory over Maynardville (Tenn.) Union Country -- Knoxville (Tenn.) Fulton scored a touchdown.

The team has punted three times in eight games this season.

Quarterback Penny Smith has two fewer touchdowns (17) than incomplete passes (19) on the year. Running back Daryl Rollins-Davis has 1,269 yards and 25 touchdowns on 86 carries. Receiver Xavier Hawkins has scored a touchdown on more than half of his receptions with 12 scores on 23 catches for 658 yards to go with three rushing touchdowns, two punt return TDs and an interception for a score.

The trio of two-star prospects are leading one of the most explosive offenses in the nation and has the team positioned as the top team in the state and No. 94 in the RivalsHigh100.

Through the first eight games the team has been held under 50 points just once and is outscoring its opponents 482-29.

If it is able to repeat as state champion -- and continue this pace -- it will push toward 900 points on the year, which could set a national record currently standing at 903 by Albermarle (N.C.) High set in 2001.

Western Carolina is a good spot. If Dooley was still here, Tenn would be a good spot for Rollins. :) I hope the kid kills it though!

They must be evaluating his potential to add weight and still have the quickness he needs to compete at an SEC level. They may also be looking at stuff we don't see or know about.

From a positive standpoint - it is rare to see any HS RB that has the vision this kid does. He understands how to read the running lanes and blocks while having the ability to cut back. He obviously has good speed. Which makes it look like it is too easy due to the level of competition.

His situation reminds me of Dennis Rogan. An obviously good RB converted to a mediocre d-back by Fulmer at a time when UT had injury and talent issues at RB. Dumb. This kid deserves better than that. Go be a RB somewhere else if the class is full because he is a RB, not a d-back.

But none of the naysayers on here should whine about not having a change of pace, quick RB or good returner if Butch doesn't get Scott or another RB like that.

So what your saying is Evan Berry could do the same thing as a Vol(kind of a tweener with great speed) playing RB while being bigger and more capable of taking the punishment in the SEC. IMO CBJ has got this under control.

So, Rogan who was undersized and ran a 4.71 forty should have played running back in the SEC because he dominated weak high school competition as a RB? Rogan had no business being a RB in the SEC.
