'15 DE GA Andrew Butcher (UT Commit 6/8/13)

40 times are always so inflated. The perception from the average fan is that if you don't run a 4.4 40 you're slow. Very small % of HS and CFB players actually run a 4.40 or better.

You keep your facts and logic to yourself Ron Swanson!!!

Official US Army National Combine results for Butcher
* Jersey number: 355
* Height & weight: 6-2, 243.5
* Bench reps: 33
* Vertical jump: 28.5"
* 40: 5.27
* Shuttle: 4.64

Hand times were originally provided for participants before their electronic times were posted, and I believe that's where Butcher's reported 40 time of 5.01 came from.

Interesting to see the difference in some of the hand vs. electronic times. For instance, Barton Simmons reported, "Got our first hand times sub 4.3. Marcus Taylor out of Virginia had 4.30 and 4.28 on his two clocks last run." Taylor's electronic times, however, were 4.69 and 4.70.

FWIW, the best electronic 40 time at the combine was a 4.61 (Texas A&M commit Jay Bradford) and Taylor was the only other player under 4.70.

All makings of a great DE. His vertical will only get better and his speed is no issue since he has great hands and is as strong as an ox. Kids going to be beast for us.

I am not hung-up on Buthcher's 40 time. All I care about is watching him rip apart offensive lines and make tackles for losses and qb sacks. He does those two things better than any high school junior I have ever seen.

yep - when you get to the combine very few players after all those years of S&C and training go run sub 4.40's - some of these ridiculous HS events where half the field runs a 4.4 are complete BS

looks like this event probably had legit times

Jarvis Jones ran a 4.92 on a combine clock and wrecked the SEC so not worried at all about this time

Simeon Rice was an admitted 5.0 40 regular in the prime of his career...he only had to time a 4.7 to get his rookie contract.

I think i see why the times are so slow at this event. They were mistakenly measuring 49 times..... All makes sense now

Simeon Rice was a beast for Tampa.

My reason for using him as an example...I think he was the one quoted as never having to do that junk again...when asked what his 40 was at his Super Bowl media day.

Just watched his film. This kid's gonna be a beast for us. The thing I like best about him is his very high motor (reminds me of Will Overstreet), he can flat out get to the qb and disrupt the backfield, plus he plays the run very well too. He is just wreaking havoc on every play in those highlights.

He already has good size too. Just imagine after he's in the UT program for a year or two. Also love how he's kinda leading the way as far as recruiting other 15 guys trying to assemble TheDreamTeam15 class at UT. These are the type of players that will be team captains their upperclassmen years.

has he been timed in the 200 M Butterfly yet? and while we're at it, how's his Breaststroke?

When they start doing 40's in full uniform, on grass, then I'll pay attention

They should if you ask me. Makes no sense to judge football player speed out of uniforms and pads. And you'll never get down in a track start on a field either.

Please validate that opinion. I watched Carl's several times and it was of his senior year. Butcher's explosiveness off the ball is great, but his vision and play recognition is what will make him elite. The way he gets off a block on run plays is superior to any high schooler I've seen.
