agreed I think TX is going to be coach shopping in about 3-4 years - we shall see

Strong is either going to knock it out of the park at Texas or be an epic failure...no middle ground imo. I tend to think the latter ends up coming to fruition. I've never been a huge fan of Strong as a coach. We will see very soon if he has the chops to succeed at a big time school though...

Why? Is he leaving TX already? What big time school is giving him a chance? :naughty:

Curious why more folks did not feel this way when a few of us were pointing out how CBJ as a possible hire for UT made a lot of sense when the job was on the market. He had won elsewhere, and financially he made sense. The man did not have a lot of support on this board to be hired prior to him getting the job.

Perhaps my biggest concern (at the time) was the fact that one (of only a couple) of Dooley's signature wins was against Butch at Cincy's helm.

Yep - i distinctly remember me making the case for CBJ - good point after good point - and then Breakerboy said his only qualification was they couldnt have lost to Dooley as a HC

I couldnt come up with anything at the time to refute that one :)

I thought Cincy actually had a decent outing that day in terms of offense, but there were very few teams in the country at that time, IMO, that could have kept up with Bray, Rogers, and a healthy Hunter. Cincy just didn't have the horses to handle those guys.

As for Chump, for what it's worth I think he and Jones have very different coaching styles despite the relative similarities in sideline behavior. Chump is a coordinator. He's a scheme guy, and he's at his best when doing just that instead of having to manage a whole program. Only time will tell if Roper is enough to save his job, but even if he gets canned he'll make some other program a fine DC. Jones on the other hand is a CEO type. He has been a coordinator/position coach before, but there's nothing really groundbreaking about his schemes. He's a program manager with meticulous sense for the small details and a knack for motivating his players. He's an energy guy, and where Chump's style is expressed through scheme, Jones' is expressed through philosophy. So I'm not sure that the two can really be compared at this point, at least not yet.

I've never been, but I've heard Austin is pretty awesome city. Dallas was okay, but not my personal taste.

Yeah. I hate the fake UT. The State of Texas......meh....it's ok. I like Austin though.

Austin is actually a really nice city...maybe I was a lil harsh lol. Maybe just the Univ. of Texas campus can burn. I love the Dallas/Fort Worth area too. :)

You just posted he's a better HC than WM. Now you're going to change your mind? lol

Quit hounding him Ron!...he's a good person who secretly likes our program better but roots go back to a Gator pacifier.

I he really runs a legit 4.40 I'm sure a lot of coaches and scouts will be getting one too...

Saban and Miles came from big 10/12 before they got sec gig. Ill give you Meyer and SOS but they are the exception to the rule. I questioned Meyer's hire after Zook-gate...and im sure most here lol'd at UF at the time.

Saban had good success and began proving himself at Toledo before moving to a major conference like the Big 10 at Mich State, and thus proves my point nicely

Miles was a little different. First HC job was at Oklahoma State so he's not as good an example as Saban and Meyer. However, The Big 12 wasn't exactly the SEC either, certainly a lesser conference, and he won there. He certainly has had great success in the SEC.

A better example than Miles would have been Spurrier who had unparalleled success at Duke in pretty bad ACC, which you "gave me". Thanks

Here's another one... Brian Kelly at Notre Dame. Is 37-15 at ND, played for a national championship. His college HC career began at Grand Valley State where he had great success.

How about Petrino? Had great success at Arkansas, came from Louisville in the lowly Conf USA/Big East.

Wanna go historical? Bo Schembechler had great success at University of Miami Ohio before becoming an all time great at Michigan. Woody Hayes was 33-9 at Denison and Miami-Ohio before becoming an all time great at Ohio State. Speaking of Ohio State, how about Jim Tressel who had great success at Division II Youngstown State before a great career at OSU

I'm certain there are others. There's 8 examples. If you can coach and have strong, consistent success in lesser conferences, it'll more often than not translate. It's kinda silly to think otherwise IMO.
