'15 FL DE Marques Ford (FORMER UT commit)

The wording of his twitter strongly suggests it was not his decision. He would not be the first choice to pull his offer if it were only to make room. Just guessing but it seems something could have happened during his visit that Butch didn't like. It would not take this long for any such incident to get to Butch.

The only thing about doing this is you start to burn bridges with the HS coaches of these kids unless you have a dang good reason or your willing to find them a place. I hope they don't have a player we want anytime soon. It's late in process and the kid has told others No that came in to talk to him. Luckily he is highly rated now so it shouldn't be hard for him to get another offer. Unfortunately it will probably be our rival, Florida.

So that leaves us with Butcher, Phillips, Taylor(hybrid like Maggit) as 3 DEs we are taking in this class. I did see a comment from Austin Smith that he could also play that hybrid Maggit role. So I wonder if they see him as a DE solution. We also may be in it for Tega a lot more than I thought

Are you speaking of the Nigerian that has played football for one season? And is a 4* DE? If so, he broke his leg last night in a basketball game.

Decommitment then WVU being mentioned in the same sentence usually means grades.

Maybe we uncovered some issues he's having in the classroom this weekend on his OV.

What I hate about this is that its so late in the cycle. Kid has like 2 weeks before NSD. And he was firm the whole way through and was excited to go to UT

I like everyone on VN was really surprised about the decommitment. One thing I thought was strange was that he wasn't included the picture tweeted out by some of the defensive recruits. They were describing the picture as the future of the Vols defense. He's a talented kid, and I just assumed he had a solid spot in the 2015 class. Maybe it was the greyshirt option like someone mentioned. He certainly didn't sound happy. Best of luck to him.

I wouldn't be shocked either. Maybe it's more proof that UT is expecting to land/flip a few bigger fish. Ford is a good player, but Vols need room in case something bigger comes along.

Think you're onto something here. Seems like UF or FSU would be the obvious choice of it were possible for him. UF should be the easy choice given their class size if we simply cut him. Seems like Butch didn't want to take a chance with a possible non qualifier.

Reminds me of the Bruce Irvin situation a few years back. I loved that guy. He did well for himself.

Yeah but he is still signing with a team for this class. He was likely to redshirt anyway wherever he went to learn the fundamentals and technique. Teams want him know to get him in their system

I can think of several commits I would have cut loose before Ford. Very disappointed he won't be in Big Orange next year. I think we've all been expecting attrition for a while, but Ford going first really causes me to scratch my head. When the next phases of cuts come through, I really hope we trim from the bottom half of our board and not from the top half.

Not necessarily based on talent. He is at a position where we have recruited well already. Getting Butcher, Taylor, and Phillips makes this easier. Plus, I would be a little surprised if they asked a local prospect to look around. JMO.
