I wanted to make it up for Orange Carpet Day, but I couldnt, so we rescheduled for another date, and that date fit. I was just there for a couple hours, said Abernathy, whose older brother, Cincinnati senior Ralph David Abernathy IV, previously played for Tennessee coach Butch Jones staff during his time with the Bearcats.
I just talked with the coaches, talked with a couple of players I knew before and got to see some dorms, talked to some academic advisors stuff like that. I spent the whole day with (defensive coordinator John) Jancek, (defensive backs coach Willie) Martinez and Coach Jones. We were just hanging out, getting to know each other better, and (they were) showing me what Tennessee had to offer.
(Any connection here?????)
Hes not a recruit, but a name that will certainly be worth remembering moving forward is Patrick Abernathy. Abernathy recently joined Tennessees staff as the Coordinator for High School relations and it looks like a very nice addition. Abernathy comes to the Vols from the Middle Tennessee area where he was an assistant coach and assistant athletic director for Brentwood Academy. His hiring looks like it will certainly strengthen current ties and help the staff build new ones across the state thanks to his many connections with various schools and coaches. This is another great example of the emphasis that Butch Jones has put on building relationships with high school coaches across the state of Tennessee.
Also, just as OT cool story bro...Coach Abernathy's step-son, Woody Baron, a Sophomore DT with Virginia Tech and 2012 Brentwood Academy graduate really liked UT and wanted an offer at the time. However, they couldn't get Derek Dooley to even give him the courtesy of a look in his direction. This also was a big reason Jalen Ramsey, Woody's teammate and friend at BA, turned against UT. Coach Abernathy was also left with a very bad impression of UT. I say this just to emphasize what a huge difference Butch Jones has made. He has absolutely wrapped his arms around the local coaches to let them know how important they are.
Coach Ab told me several times, had Dooley just evaluated his step-son and said, you know, you're going to make someone an excellent football player but unfortunately we don't have a place for you at UT they would have respected that and appreciated them for at least looking. Now Ab is on staff with Butch and is 110% Big Orange...it's unbelievable really.

The guy was a complete buffoon that knew he had lucked into the the jackpot, literally and only had to buy a few yrs and he was set up for life. He was basically better off by being fired. He got the same money and didn't have to work for it. It's amazing we would be paying him $7-8 to sit at home with his kids if he hadn't got the Dallas job. Now we pay him to work for someone else who also pays him. Hell of a deal.
Good post.
Dools is an attorney first and foremost. That's why he was also AD at Tech. He figured out how to make big bucks using his law and limited coaching backgrounds along with being in the good ole boy club because of daddy. The blame for his hire lies squarely at the feet of UT officials, BOT and big boosters.
Butch is methodically righting wrongs committed through the end of the Fulmer years, Kiffin's brief fart in the wind, and the Dools Disaster. Glad to see it happening here.
