'15 GA CB Micah Abernathy (UT Signee 2/4/15)

What's the deal with Abernathy? While I am admittedly a "star gazer" at times, I also am confident in CBJ's evaluations. Still, with limited spots, Abernathy is a 3* and #33 CB, which seems like a bit of a stretch. Is there buzz he's just underrated, not reviewed, etc., or is this like CBJ identifying Moseley last year in that CBJ identifies a player and goes and gets him in spite of other evaluations? Don't get me wrong, if CBJ will take his commitment, he must be considerably better than his ranking, but I wanted to know what the buzz is about him just the same.

Go look at his offer list...that should tell you all you need to know. Legit 6'2" CBs are not a dime a dozen. He is criminally underrated by Rivals, and I'm guessing he gets a bump in their updated rankings this month.

Rivals seems to be the outlier here, and I would expect a significant bump in rating this month. He is a 4* player, and ranked around #200 overall on both 247 and Scout. Offer list includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisville, Ohio St, Oregon, Notre Dame, Penn St, South Carolina, Tennessee, and USC.

Florida, Oregon, & South Carolina know a thing or two about CB talent, so those offers tell me a lot. He is a physical corner with speed and strength to overpower smaller WRs, and is big and strong enough to match up with bigger WRs. As babyavi said, 6-1/6-2 CBs with speed aren't in abundance, and that seems to be the type athlete that Butch Jones wants playing CB.

We've got 3 spots left. Who do we cut loose to make room for the remaining 4 on your list?

Well I think a couple on our list are grey shirt possibilities. Bruce and Lovingwood.

Also Woods will be off it for sure.

Otherwise I am sure we will lose more than 1 more off our current list.

Dylan Jackson is getting pursued heavily by other schools, we may drop a couple, who knows.

But I will tell you 100% there will be PLENTY of movement on our commitment list, especially near the bottom half.:good!:

Those people certainly do exist, though I think WhatInVolnation was clear that he only wanted some insight, and wasn't questioning CBJ's eye for talent.

As to the people you are referring to though, I would simply point to Cam Sutton and Emmanuel Moseley as examples. Both 3* kids (Moseley started out a 2* with a questionable offer list), and both will likely have started as true FR. That says two things. One, it speaks to the complete void of talent we had at CB wjen CBJ arrived, and two, it speaks to this staff's ability to identify players' ability early on without relying on other teams to scout for them. We have seen numerous kids be offered in the past two years where Tennessee was the first major offer, and the other majors catch on having let Tennessee's staff do the scouting legwork. It's becoming a trend.

Do you really think CBJ goes by rivals, 247, etc?

No, I don't think CBJ cares about Rivals, 247, etc., rankings. For fans, the rankings are helpful in monitoring the relative success of the team's recruiting efforts versus other teams. Moreover, the rankings frequently track coaches' interests in players, including offer lists, and, at times, accurately predict the on field success of players. There are certainly exceptions to these general rules, but they are useful tools nevertheless. Finally, there is frequently correlation between team recruiting rankings and on field results. So, rankings have value but are not completely determinative.

All that said, CBJ, like great coaches, relies on his own evaluations. The article about CBJ relying heavily on the evaluations of the former NFL scout on his staff was eye opening. At the end of the day--as reflected in my original post--I trust CBJ's evaluations over all else, including rankings. I'm sure Abernathy is better than his ranking given CBJ's interest in him. Abernathy's ranking on Rivals, thus, is probably not reflective of his talent level, particularly with his offer list.

By the way, anyone with a 6th grade reading level would've read my original post as an inquiry about the rumors, opinions, etc., about Abernathy's potential since CBJ is obviously pursuing him hard (along with other big time coaches), not a criticism of CBJ pursuing Abernathy because of his relatively paltry ranking by Rivals.

My bad, I stopped reading after: "Abernathy is a 3* and the #33 CB, which seems to be a bit of a stretch". Forgive me, I have read those sentiments all too often on here.

I am going to say with a good amount of certainty that we will not grayshirt anyone to 2016. If you thought the numbers were tight for 2015, they are worse for 2016. We cannot afford to carry two over to 2016.

I really don't see us letting Jackson go. He has the size and build to grow into 2 or 3 different positions and he is an extremely strong kid. I believe Butch will work hard to keep him.

I think they end up taking about 6 more, maybe 7.
Right now I'll go with:

WR - Jefferson
OL - Boulware (Miss out on Richmond)
DT - Tuttle
DE - Walker (Miss out on Phillips)
LB - Sapp
CB - Abernathy
CB - Amadi / Martin

Sounds about right. I'd be ok with that.:good!:

i tend to look a lot more at offers rather then star rating. I understand that doesnt tell the whole story but it is nice if UT has a 3 star guy with big offers compared to all the great "Diamonds in the rough" 3 star recruits that alot of people were so excited about a few years ago...And if any of you remember correctly, you were a NEGAVOL if you thought our recruiting was bad......SO, to all you guys/gals that bashed us for displaying our unhappines with recruiting a few years ago, WE WERE RIGHT!!! ALL YOUR "DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH", AWESOME PROSPECTS WITH POTENTIAL OR QUICK TWITCH, OR WHATERVER COACH DOOLITTLE WAS PREACHING TO YOU BELIEVERS OF THE DARK SIDE COACHING STAFF ARE KILLING UT RIGHT NOW!!!!!! The recruiting guys arent always right, but there pretty close...

I'm not saying we let him go just saying bama and LSU are now pushing and VQ said he's listening. Not saying for sure he will leave us but just an example that there is a LONG way to go and all these people who act like you can only count spots that are currently available are being obtuse!

Jackson will take visits to both LSU and Bama during the season. From what I am being told CNS is turning up the heat on Dylan

If he does take those visits ,he is in real danger of losing his seat on the Big Orange Train.

Got dat right. We are sitting well at DE with Ford and the Butcher on board and possibly Kyle on deck. Maybe Dylan knows something we don't.
