Composite has him as a 4*, but 247 & Rivals both list him as a 3*.

Edit: And to be clear, I couldn't care less about the stars. I just find it curious that a guy with his offer list is ranked so low on their respective lists. He has the size, the stats, the offers, essentially everything you'd like in a stud DT, yet is way down their list at position rankings for DTs.

Hopefully he is a Vol and shuts it down.

Curious to see what he does with McKenzie and Jones likely higher on the UT board.

I hope I am wrong and don't stab me for it but this kind of has a Harrell feel to it. Kid was planning to announce much later. McKenzie looking all Vol, DJ Jones just coming off his UT visit. Part of me says Johnson moved up his announcement to get a spot with the Vols. Part of me says he tried to commit and the staff did not take it yet triggering a commitment elsewhere(UNC?).

As I said in the 1st line, hopefully he is a Vol.

I brought up the same thing a couple weeks ago in the Settle thread. I've never seen someone take four elite DT's in a single class, seems like a log jam could be created at the position. I do want for our DT's to be rotated but it just seems like a bit much.

I love taking as many lineman as possible though so sign them up!

Consider how many offenses are moving to the hurry-up. I think two full first team D-lines who can play full speed and swap possessions may be the wave of the future. DBs and LBs can stand up and catch their breath a bit but not the linemen. Every second is a battle.

Would be very interesting if true but I really believed he was the guy that bbutcher was hinting at. I thought I had seen andrew butcher had some contact with him a while back but I could be wrong

Would be hard to believe he doesn't go VOL. I wouldn't worry about #s at the DT position either. Biggest need in this class!

Slow playing kids will trigger this kind of response a lot of times. They think the coaches are being sincere and quickly realize they are a back up plan. Butcher could have very well felt Johnson was about to commit. As you said they spend time talking to each other. Johnson had recently said UT was his leader. Of course Butcher probably has no idea where Johnson is on the UT coaches board. He could be 3rd, and as of today may not be a take IF the staff feels they can take 2 DTs and the 2 ahead of Johnson are leaning toward the Vols currently. McKenzie I feel very good about. Jones, not so much. It's a big risk IF the staff is willing to lose Johnson in hopes of getting Jones. We'll see where he commits to today.

After taking so many on the DL last year, I don't think that is the case in 2015. Still feel 2 DTs and 3 DEs would be plenty on the DL unless more spots open up.
