'15 NC DT Sterling Johnson

Yeah, I'm not sure you move your decision date up in order to not commit to UT if you were planning to commit later. Seems odd. But who know? I guess we'll see tonight. (I know, I know, Harrell, but still...)

Maybe Johnson picked a later date as it seems CBJ has kids pick a "special date" for them to commit. I could see situations where a "special date" may be just that. I could also see where having a kid pick a date months away kind of helps IF your slow playing them. If I were Johnson and saw the McKenzie recruitment unfolding then read the stuff coming out of the Jones visit I might question the UT coaches to see where I stood. As I have mentioned before the best ? IMO a kid could ask CBJ is "would you take my commitment today"? What if Johnson asked that and did not get the response he expected? It could then trigger a commitment to Johnson's #2. Maybe the "special date" was no longer special as his #2 would happily take him today.

Just a thought.

Looks like that is what is about to play out. UT wanted Johnson to wait on them while they tried to land bigger fish and Johnson(much like Harrell did), may be saying screw that, I have other quality options.

As I said before, when you have a smaller class and having to slow play kids will always lead to losing kids you "lead" for.

Tripping, IMO. Sterling Johnson is a MUST take. He's a DT, not a DE. Butch Jones and Co. are elite recruiters and you can rest assured they've gone over every scenario many times over.

this kid is built like jordan williams (6'5 280lbs ish). he will be a guy who can play inside and out. really nice explosion for a guy his size. hes a stud and an Under Armour AA. He can go just about anywhere he wants. They will take this kid.

I really don't see us passing this guy up at the moment. Sure, we're in on 3/4 other highly rated DTs, but Johnson is a highly rated kid himself and has had TN way out in front for a while by his own admission.

If we told him we weren't going to take him right now, it wouldn't make sense for him to immediately commit to another school. He gave an interview where he talked about not wanting to make the wrong choice and have to decommit. If that's how he really feels, it would be odd to close things down immediately after you find out your favorite school doesn't want you.

I think it's more likely he was told that his commitment could be taken now, but that they couldn't guarantee him a spot if he held off until late fall/winter.

"Tennessee has long been out in front there. Johnson's stock has fallen off a bit with those who have seen him at camps and such.

I'm not completely sure he will end up announcing today. I think some schools would like to see him at their camp. He has never been on Tennessee's campus.

We are watching it closely today."

Hubbs with the curveball. He's been on campus hasn't he?

Would be huge to have him and Butcher both repping UT (possibly playing side by side) at the UA game.

Did we pull any high school, true DT last year? Barnett is kind of a tweeter, and we got Owen, but would be huge to get a true HS DT this early with Mckenzie looking hopeful. Aren't that many HS DT out there.

Sawyers and Owen

we will see with Roberson. Hes either a DT or an OG. kid is a bull though no doubt. def the strongest freshman we brought in.

I think we need to take Johnson. I don't think DJ Jones is near a lock. His sister goes to South Carolina and he is at JUCO with one of their commits Dante Sawyer.

Mike Sawyers from Ensworth.

Oh Ya. Still, getting a couple HS DT this year would be fantastic. 4 above average DT in a rotation is the main ingredient for an effective DL, those big boys can't play every snap and we've had noticeable drop off between 1s and 2s for many years now.

I agree. If we can get Jones on board, great; he's a great talent. However, passing on a highly rated high school kid because you think a JUCO might commit later is a pretty big risk.

Is that even a question? We've had a lack of DT for a long time. We need at least 2 DT and preferably a third JUCO whose ready to contribute even if we don't get DJ.

Unrelated, did that DT who ditched us for Auburn ever make it in?
