'15 NC DT Sterling Johnson

Kinda sounds like VQ is saying UT may be trying to talk him out of committing tonight as it won't be the Vols. If I were a recruit, not sure I'd be buying all that.

CBJ: "Why don't you wait to decide"?

SJ: "Would you take me now CBJ"?

CBJ: "Well no, not right now, but who knows 3 months from now".

SJ:

Wait? I'd guess no.

Or he also feels very good about his #2 and realizing he is being slow played does not sit well with him or his family. UT means a lot to us being UT fans. We may be willing to sit back and HOPE our long time favorite school would take us down the road. Recruits with a lot of options not so much. Slow playing top talent will lose you a lot of top talent. It's just the way it is.

You can't land the best of the best if you don't wait on them. When you are leading for 2 5* DTs and the best JUCO DT, then you wait on them. Maybe we only want to sign three DTs this class. If so, then Sterling is committing to someone else tonight. If he does commit to us, then I believe that tells us loud and clear that we are taking four DTs this cycle.

DT is the 2nd most important position on an SEC football team behind QB. Whereas typically only one QB plays, most teams have a 6 man DT rotation. Our shelves are stocked with young talent at most spots. You never turn away a talented DT even if it means taking 4 or 5 of them in a class. Lots of DT's red shirt or become injured or leave early if everything goes great. DT is a position that you will rob from other positions to stock up IMHO.

I'll say this. I hope the coaching staff does not buy into the twitter lists and "Vols lead" like the fans do.

Quality post right here imo...

Numbers always factor in, but you take great talent when great talent wants to come. DT is definitely one of those spots imo. It's all kinds of fun watching this class take shape :)

No offense man but this is patently ridiculous and I'm not sure you really have any for-sure way to prove its happening other than mere speculation with Marquell Harrell. It's Butch Jones' job to take the commitments of the very best talent he can secure, based on him and his staff's evaluations. While it's theoretically conceivable that slow playing certain kids may result in a loss of their commitment, it is 100% absolutely guaranteed that Jones not bringing in the very best talent he can secure will eventually result in a loss of his job. I feel pretty confident saying that's not something he wants to happen.

I'm not saying Johnson is some borderline talent; he's a good player. But the fact that we're in on bigger talents that the staff prefers more should tell you that unlike Dooley, Jones isn't going to settle for kids just because they want to commit now (if that is indeed the case). He's going after the best ones we can possibly get, because Tennessee has to win now, on the field and in recruiting, if we want to have any shot to reclaim the SEC East throne.

Besides...what would you have him do if he took Sterling's commitment now and then a better kid wanted in down the road? Cut Sterling loose then, after being committed for several months (because we all know that would really grind your gears), or just do the professional thing and not take his commitment in the first place? He has to do what's best for Tennessee. That's his job and I expect him to do it.

I haven't followed this closely but what I think I'm hearing is that the staff (and other schools) don't think this guy is as talented as we might otherwise believe. If they aren't confident this guy is up to snuff and we've got a shot with a handful of other guys, I'm all for waiting. Taking someone lower on your board might encourage the others that are higher to look elsewhere. We will see.

If we are in a position to tell Sterling no, that's pretty incredible. We watched Butch upgrade every decommit and wait for bigger better fish to pull the trigger last year.

In Butch we trust.

So there it is, Mr. Butcher said in that other thread that they won't take his commitment right now. Feel bad for Sterling but it's part of the game. Better now than to take his commitment and in November tell him he has to look elsewhere.

I never said they had to take Johnson. I have long said IMO they take (2) DTs for this class. One is McKenzie. The other spot makes for a lot of options. Most know my stance on taking commitments as well. IF they take a kids commitment IMO it should stick no matter who wants onboard later on IF the kid is doing the right things. I'm not one freaking out today over news that Johnson may not be a take today for Tennessee. I simply said it clearly shows he is being slow played. Him naming Tennessee his #1 may point to that IF he was being honest and now UT won't take his commitment. I know the current numbers have a lot of quality recruits on the back burner for possible spots in this class. Others don't feel the same way. "They are all takes"!

This right here. I'm tired of certain people talking out both sides of their mouth.

"We shouldn't slow-play kids like this! It's unethical!"

Then in the next breath:

"We can't just take this many commits and then drop someone later! It's unethical!"

Make up your mind. Which is it?

Must be very confident in the other guys at DT to not take it at this time....you know we are back on right path when we are in position to to land top targets
