'15 TN ATH Jauan Jennings (UT commit 4/7/14)

Got the go ahead. ..

He may not play defense this year.

I know he wants to play QB. And that you and many other see the progress and think he has what it takes. But what is the upside of him only playing QB this year?

Aside from possible injuries with the play of both sides, I don't see much positive. Especially since he is a great ATH, and if something weren't to work out, it looks like he could successfully switch to safety.

JJ should just go old school and show what a bad mo he is. Play S and QB. Then he could for sure win the Heistman. Yes, I meant Heist since they have stolen it form old Johnny and PM in the past.

It's not confirmed but more than a few players on the team have heard it.

I guess the only "benefit" would be to keep him healthy. I agree, he's a great ATH and I like him on defense.

We shall see.

He can put all his focus to learning and playing QB instead of having to worry about the defensive side also.

I agree. While a lot of HS kids play both offense and defense, being able to just focus on 1 will always allow for better/quicker development. I would also think if you're playing QB and S when it's getting into the 4th qtr, you're pretty tired. Mistakes can be made when you are tired. I'd bet a QBs numbers/stats would look a lot better if he were able to just focus on QBing all game long.

I think you should do whatever you can to help your team win. So I believe he should play defense this year also. This helps them win. This is what a leader does. An individual thinks of himself. A leader thinks of the team. If he is not going to play defense this year, then why be out there on defense in the 7 on 7. Let somebody else get reps.

That being said, I thought he looked good at QB yesterday. His passing has definitely improved. He occasionally still makes a bad decision that results in an interception but overall his arm and decisions looked good.

We don't know for sure this will happen. It's obvious that it has been talked about. Again, this has come from multiple players BUT not from JJ or coach.

I'll let you know for sure when practice starts.

Right, I understand that. But hypothetically...what if he were to be switched to S after a year or two of QB with UT. Then he hasn't developed his skill set any since he was junior in HS. That will seriously put him behind the 8 ball. And would only leave him 2-3 years to relearn/grow on defense in order to get into the game.

To me, it just seems like a pretty big risk. Taking an elite athlete and putting all your eggs in a single basket.

I would like to think that if you asked JJ, he would rather play S for UT, than be a back up QB or transfer out to play QB else where. (if he were to get beat out by QD or a 16 guy)

With him set to play QB at UT, I don't care if he continues to play S or not. I'd rather he focus on QB and getting ready to do so in college. I'd imagine they have other kids who can line up at S there at his HS. Of course if he were planning to come into UT and play S, I'd say focus on that this year.

I would imagine CBJ wanting to run the same type of offense he had in Cinn. Playing both Pro-Style QB and Dual Threat. He had great rewards doing that. So i can see Dormady and Jennings getting lots of play time in the future.

Butch has made some big changes to his positional recruiting, body typos, and his playbook since arriving at UT.

At his other stops, he recruited shorter WRs, based his passing game on short in routes, stops, and curls. This he recruited mostly guys under 6 feet tall and posed quickness.

At UT he is recruiting much taller WRs and in his first season, changed his base passing attack on a longer route tree than he did at his previous stops.

I would venture to say that he has done so because, at UT, he can recruit the top tall WRs and is able to run more of a Brian Kelly passing attack, predicated on a longer route tree(Go)

Longer tree routes will require more accuraccy and stronger arm strength form our qb's. Let's hope the latest news on Worley carries into the season.

Last paragraph is spot on. Butch Jones is selling the WRU aspect of UT's history very well. I love it!

I think that the reasoning behind it is they would rather have him rested and fully ready to go in the 4th quarter playing quarterback. The dropoff from 1st to 2nd at Safety is more than likely considerably less than the dropoff from 1st to 2nd QB. If he gets hurt (which is more likely when somebody gets tired), then their chances of winning with the 2nd string QB go WAY down. Should be interesting to see the info start to flow out once practice starts.

Jennings would be absolute hell at the safety position. Maybe in a year or so QD locks up the quarterback spot & Jennings is open to the switch.

But like I said about Gibson..I don't really care where Jennings plays, we need elite athletes of his caliber in a bad way.

BS says Jennings the better QB, Dilfer says Gibson could win the Heisman. Guess it depends on who's info you prefer..

Didn't mean to interrupt your gloating though, please carry on.

I'd take Dilfer more seriously if he didn't put heaps and scroggins as future hypesman winners as well.
