'15 TN ATH Jaylond Woods (UT Commit 4/20/13)

Does Butch see Jaylond as a special team guy? He is paying more attention to special teams by spending recruiting schollies on long snappers, punters and kickers. That is counter intuitive to me, but is he actually recruiting special teamers? Maybe he really believes special teams is a third of the game and games can be won and lost there. Don't know, but sure seems that way.

Maybe our fastest recruit.. Why Not? KR, DB, Slot

Because he is local and isn't a 4 or 5*. I'm just gonna let this staff do what they do because to date they haven't shown any signs of being poor talent evaluators. If they think he is a take then I think he is a take.

“I’m glad I got the commitment and scholarship,” he said, “but there’s really no days off. You still feel like you’ve got to work hard.”

Woods enjoys hard work, which is why showcasing his skills against other college hopefuls appealed to his competitive nature.

“I loved it,” he said. “I love coming to all of these camps … every time they throw a camp. It’s just fun to be here, participating in something with the college, knowing I’m going to be here next year.”

Someone who has seen this guy play in person tell me why he is a take. Just asking.

Looks good to me on film but I haven't seen him in person. I don't think he signs here anyway based on what people have said in terms of him needing to get his ish right

Nooooo...next thing you will be telling me is that lies are told, promises are broken, and kids are told to look elsewhere AFTER a staff accepts their commitment. Say it ain't so!!!

Yes it is so. Happens everywhere sadly.

Forgot my blue font :)

It's the nature of the beast...if a coach wants to win games and keep a job, it's a necessary evil. I don't really see anything wrong with it. Kids know it's always a possibility and they always have the option of flipping at any moment. It's just recruiting.

It is, but it sucks to see it happen right before signing day.

He played in my high school's district. Honestly I don't know if he's a take. He's very athletic. He's shifty and has good lateral quickness but, he doesn't really stand out to you. I saw Cody Blanc play in high school and he looked like a much better player than Woods.

Or, "gasp", recruiting is fluid, and staffs are always looking to upgrade

That may indeed be the case. I tell myself taking commitments from instate kids and then dropping them later in the process is not a good plan at all. If the coaches are unsure if they would keep the kid "if one of these 10 or so guys wanted in later", then IMO just don't take the commitment from the kid you would recruit over and drop. As others have pointed out burning bridges in your own state is not very wise.

Who's to say that some of these offers/commitments aren't conditional to begin with? Being straight up with a kid by telling them if player A wants to commit it could change things wouldn't bother me at all. That wouldn't be dropping a kid for another later in the process. It's up to the player whether to accept a conditional offer such as that.

Dews commitment quickly had some things tied to it last year. That came out very quickly after his commitment from several sources. I have not heard anything like that with either Woods or Bruce.

I just don't get why even bother taking a kids commitment and at the same time telling him, "if a better player wants in, you're the 1st to go". All a sudden those tears of joy mentioned when JB committed don't mean a whole lot.

How many instate guys did CBJ take a commitment from last year and then cut loose?

I'm not necessarily talking about the in-state kids and I'm not saying these types of offers should become the norm, but it is what it is. It can lock a guy up just in case another doesn't pan out. And if there was full disclosure from the get go then there is no reason to take issue with it imo. I haven't heard anything like that with Bruce, but seems like Woods had/has work to do in order to keep his offer.
