'15 TN ATH Jocquez Bruce (UT commit 6/17/14)

Devrin Young has relatively low return attempts, 32 punt returns and 54 kick returns.

Gault had 78 punt and 78 kick returns.

Stanley Morgan, 4th all time in total yards returned, had 74 punt and 37 kick returns. Is ahead of Devrin by 40 total yards.

Devrin has been solid but not flashy. Before he got here nobody could even catch a punt so I definitely think he has earned that scholarship lol.

I still take my chances with someone else. Surely someone on the roster can do better.

I'd rather a punt returner be consistent, dependable, and serviceable than flashy and high risk.. Obviously a mix between the two would be ideal, but I think devrin has more than earned his scholly.

Rankings matter until they hit the field. 5* will not help a player execute. I'm not saying rankings don't matter. They are a cool tool but do they miss some? They also hit on many. I myself am going to trust the man getting paid millions and whose ass is on the line every year before I do a recruit ranking paid service. Just me though.

Fair enough Bones. Fans vary on recruiting rankings' importance. It's been debated for as long as I can remember. As Bowden used to say "recruiting well does not guarantee success but not recruiting well guarantees failure". Maybe CBJ saw something special, we will see in a couple of years if he was correct.

[blue font] We shouldve passed on Cam Sutton. He was a 5.6 3* by the time NSD rolled around [/blue font]

Bruce still has his senior season. He will get more offers and he will get a bump in the rankings. Book it

There you go using facts to beat back the haters of a young man that gives it all for UT and a VFL. I approve.

Cannot find the post, but someone keeps calling him "JoBru". Is that really his nickname?

If so, any concern that Serrano will try to take him for the baseball team? :)

Lame? Yes. No coffee yet :hi:

Just for the record, a punt return and a kick off return are completely apples and oranges. Running a kick off back 15 to 20 yards is about average at best. While, running a punt 10+ yards is considered pretty good. All-Purpose yards get skewed by kick off returns.

That all being said, Devrin has been pretty good at returns. Not as explosive and dynamic as a Reggie Bush or Percy Harvin type player but he has been solid. People tend to forget the days where you use to have a heart attack when the opposing team would punt... We couldn't even find anyone who could fair catch.

O how easily we forget the days when the other team punting was a hold your breath moment every single time...

I got to the point where I actally stopped watching punt returns. I closed my eyes until the play was over. Was just to nerve racking to watch.

Yeah, looks like 23 yards avg for career on kickoffs and 9.8 per on punts. If Devrin had a couple returns for touchdowns the perception of him would be a little different. But I will take him catching a punt and getting 9-10 yards on avg all day.

I do think someone with a little more straight line speed and better 1 cut ability would be suited better for kickoffs.

that number is skewed because our defense has been historically bad from dooley's time here and beyond. If the other team is scoring 6 or 7 tds a game, it stands to reason that devrin has had a lot more opportunities.

Sal Sunseri hates Devrin Young!!

My 2 cents on Jocquez

I don't know if the kid is SEC level or not. But I do know that the coach running the show at UT with his butt on the line seems to think he needs JB on his team. And that's enough for me until he shows me otherwise.

Hmm went back and listened to the Sports Animal interview with Joc. Said he transferred after his freshmen year because he couldn't stay out of trouble. He said it worked out really well for him.

I thought kids who got in trouble were destined to be thugs for life. That's what the Darel Middleton thread taught me anyway.

The next question I would pose is when did Devrin start fielding punts and kicks? Has he done it all 3 years or just last year. From what I remember the guys you named were here for 4 years. So of course 1 -2 years worth of stats would be less than 3-4 years worth. And I don't have anything against Devrin, because I too was glad we got someone back there that could field a kick without dropping it all over the place. Just wanted to point out that stats don't always tell the full story when comparing to other players.
