'15 TN ATH Jocquez Bruce (UT commit 6/17/14)

I hope he kills it this year. He should be on a pretty good team, they have a ton of seniors.

It's hilarious how much stock people put in 40 times.

It's not hilarious watching everyone and their mother run past, by and around us the last few years. 40 times are the measure in football of speed. But for the sake of argument, his 100 meter time is in the 11.4s. Does it mean Joc won't succeed? No. But if you are upgrading your roster, speed is a big component especially at the skill positions.

Your 40 time does not show your speed. It shows you acceleration in a short amount of time. You speed is not measured by the 40.

Not as concerned with his top end speed because he can change direction with the best. Where a lot of guys would have to slow down to cut, he doesn't.

Offer Lists. :) JK of course.

There is a reason that just about every camp, combine, and even the NFL uses the 40, and it is to test your speed.

Combines mean nothing. You aren't wearing pads, you aren't tackling or breaking tackles. They are drills to rank players. It is easier to rank somebody with better combine results than someone with bad results. It doesn't always mean the better results player is better. You can't measure speed. Speed is a measurement. You can measure a players acceleration, which is the 40 time. The combine doesn't make you a better player, practice does.

Right. That's why the NFL scouts completely ignore the speed tests at the NFL combine and campus pro days where they aren't wearing pads. All the scouts and player personnel guys take vacation instead of attending. :jpshakehead:

No offense, but that's just an absurd comment.

He said he ran 4.5 at the TN camp

That makes more sense after watching his tape and especially given his shuttle time which is pretty elite. What really struck me with his tape though was that once he had the ball in his hands and defenders were in pursuit he turned on the afterburners and made those chasing him look silly.

Good routes and solid cuts will give him the ability to elude defenders and if he gets even a small head start he'll be hard to catch because of that extra gear.

Lol at myself. I meant you really can't measure natural speed. Whatever. I'm just taking what my old High School's Strength and Conditioning coach tells us. He used to be the Strength and Conditioning coach at Ensworth but left to come to CPA.

So, you take the word of a high school S&C coach over those paid millions to evaluate talent at the highest level of football?

Did Ensworth and now CPA do speed tests? I guarantee that they do, and there is a reason they do.

The 40 is absolutely the measurement used to test speed. Shuttle times are used to measurement acceleration and explosiveness

NFL combine drills explained: Shuttle run - SBNation.com

"When it comes to the NFL Combine, the 40-yard dash is typically the headline event. Pure speed is one of the biggest draws, especially for casual observers to the draft process. Although it hasn't gained the notoriety of the 40-yard dash, the shuttle run is one of the most-important drills for some players.

While the 40-yard dash is a test of long-speed, the shuttle run is designed to showcase a player's explosiveness."

Head scratcher. Happy for Joc but he's s 4.6 guy at best. Interested to see how this shakes out.

He showed up to camp, balled out and earned an offer. That's what it takes sometimes. Some kids show up and excel, others stay home an wonder what if.

Whether or not Butch offered this kid for his talent or PR, he knows each spot is important in rebuilding and obviously thinks he can help somewhere.

If you question this you really, really need to take a step back and think for a second.

We should be happy that football is rarely played in a straight line.

The three-cone test and the shuttle are the tests the scouts really care about, not so much the 40.

40 yd dash....

You're running in a straight line while no one is attempting to tackle you.

Yes....it is hilarious, because the majority of people determine whether a kid is a "football player" by their 40 time.

HILARIOUS.
