'15 TN ATH Nathan Cottrell

Not every kid. Kids do screw up at times. They do choose to play elsewhere sometimes.

If I were a coach would I go into every year trying to see who all I can cut loose so I can sign a full class as a lot of fans would? No I would not. I would prefer to coach up the kids I made a commitment to and them making a commitment to play for me. If they are going to class, making the grades, being a team player, and doing things the right way, I would do my best to help them succeed at Tennessee. They did choose to be a VFL, not so much a Vtillyoucansignsomeonewithmorestars.

Coach B. Dodd felt the same way and it led to GT leaving the SEC because of it. Bear and Bama did not mind cutting kids they had not evaluated well. Dodd felt it was his and his staff's fault.

His color has nothing to do with it man. He's not an SEC caliber player why waste a scholly on a player. We aren't in a position to do that right now. We need players who are going to add depth we have enough guys on the team who aren't SEC quality.

I am curious as to what makes you think he is not an SEC caliber player. Please don't say level of high school competition. So what are the specific things that prevent him from being an SEC caliber player?

First of all if you have to include HS competition don't try to take levers away to prove your point. The reality is this guy while he ran a great 40 time you can train yourself to that with practice doesn't mean he's fast. Look at his tape look at how slow everyone is around him. He's like a pretty girl in a crowd full of ugly women. If you want to see pure speed go look at Emmanuel Mosley's tape that is pure speed. Secondly he has no field vision and I doubt an SEC school runs that awful offense they run at West. Next look at his tape and compare it to an elite back like a Taj Griffin and tell which you rather have.

Lastly it's very stupid not to consider a player competition when evaluating whether to take him at an SEC school(the most competitive conference). I'm not the only who thinks his talents are suspect so does every other FBS level team to this point.

It doesnt matter how much you practice, youre not going to run a 4.35 and be slow. And it just happened to be faster than the elite talent at that event. The only thing practice really helps is the launch. The rest relies on speed. You might correct your form... but thats part of speed.

Although, I would like to see him make more cuts and break more tackles in his film. A lot of the plays look like hes just running straight line sprints

I'm not envious of the coaches on this one. (Guess that's why they're millionaires.)Tough decision and to be honest, I have no idea.

What I have read makes me think the staff is looking for a change of pace, quick, fast, RB. Kid rushed for 2000 yards. Almost 15 yards a carry. He went up against the best of the best at the Sparq event and his 40 and shuttle were #1. If your looking for a back to get the corner, IMO this kid fits that to a T. Being in the UT backyard should make it an easy decision IMO.

For every one Randal Cobb there are maybe 5 dozen of "who was that?"

Weird I can't remember more then a few skill players from Knoxville that we gave scholarships to that didn't contribute. You say 60 to 1?

That statement makes absolutely no sense. With perfect technique you can maybe shave .05 off a 40 time but it's not going to make a 4.5 guy run a 4.35. Absolutely ridiculous to say running a 4.35 doesn't mean he's fast.

Of course you have to take the caliber of competition into consideration; it's one factor of many when evaluating a player.

But it's pretty myopic to downplay an athlete's show of extraordinary athleticism and simultaneously ignore the evidence that local talents have been & still are perfectly capable of being productive players in the SEC.

How many become second round draft picks and were the best player on their college team?

Just because a great player plays weaker opponents does not mean he is not a great player. They put up big numbers. What else can they do? Using the weak schedule parameter as a primary factor in player evals causes one to go Fulmer occasionally and pass up a Randall Cobb. Nathan may not be sec caliber but at this point he's done all he can do, and is worth further close scrutiny and evaluation. Or you could just tell yourself that it's impossible for a good football player to come from the east Tn area and miss on a few good ones.

So we should take this kid as a no brainer with zero offers yet we shouldn't take Harrell and all these other studs with offers from Florida, FSU, Auburn etc? Your such a joke its not even funny

We need 1 RB. IMO this kid fits the bill.

We need 3-4 OL. Jones, Stewart, Richmond IMO.

Next would be Edoga IMO.

We could take Harrell IF we miss on one of the other 2 IMO.

Does it make you feel better about yourself to follow people around a message board to insult them? I'm the joke?

That's cool. :hi:

Hilarious! I'm starting to think more and more that you are a troll, LV.

Lmfao Hahahaha incredible. Only Dooley would take this dude as our only RB. He is a guy you take as a number 3 if at all and maybe maybe a 2. This is not your premiere jalen Hurd/ Derrel Scott back that you feature. We have too many other options to seriously think this is our main RB option

I actually like LV. Brings valuable points even though some don't want to hear it. What I don't like is every thread is LV vs the world. That got old a while back. Every thread is a numbers thread now.

I just saw something in this thread I don't agree with LV about. It seems you think there's a BB and we will wait on everyone on top of the board. If we miss on Edoga and others then Marquel Harrell is a take? No he's a take now I almost guarantee that. There are some guys ala Duke Shelley who aren't takes but a guy as coveted as Harrell is a take now, 5 months from now, etc as long as he wouldn't be our 7th OL commit. You don't always get to hand pick who you want, it's more of a combination of who you want, who wants to play for you, and timing.

Sorry just something that bothered me.

I have mentioned several times the staff could choose to take more than 3-4 guys on the OL and they could do that today. Then it just changes the "we will take 2 QBs, or 2 RBs", or whatever people claim. I just feel they would not stockpile kids at 1 position and then miss totally on others. IMO they are not in a position yet to just take the best available no matter their position. A couple more classes from now, maybe they can.
