'15 TN ATH Nathan Cottrell

Nah, not really. TKJr. is a top 100 talent. Cottrell is a nice player and definitely a great athlete, but he isn't TKJr...

Yeah a lot of people on here are in denial. They think every recruiter is wrong for being wary of this guys skills. He is a great HS player I just don't believe it will translate to D1 level play especially SEC

Nike Football Combine, Pittsburgh, PA - Feb. 2010
Devrin Young: 5-6, 162
Results: 4.63 40, 4.03 shuttle, 34-0 PB, 33.2 VJ, 98.25 SPARQ

Young's rushing stats as a junior at Bearden: 222 carries for 1,455 yards (6.6 YPC) & 19 TDs (1 TD every 12 carries)

Nike SPARQ Combine, Atlanta, GA - Mar. 2014
Nathan Cottrell: 5-10.5, 178
Results: 4.35 40, 4.09 shuttle, 39-0 PB, 40.8 VJ, 132.72 SPARQ

Cottrell's rushing stats as a junior at West: 131 carries for 1,922 yards (14.7 YPC) & 22 TDs (1 TD every 6 carries)

Let's see...Cottrell is a bigger, faster, stronger, and more explosive athlete than Young, and during their junior years his per-carry season average was higher than Young's best single-game average, and he averaged at least 7 YPC in all 15 games while Young averaged under 7 YPC in 8 of his 12 games, and he scored TDs at twice the rate as Young.

But other than those things, I don't see much difference between the two. :)
No offense to dy he is a vfl and I'm glad he is but he was a dooley recruit I'm not sure if butch was here or if the program were in a better state that he would have got a offer from ut. But I have been wrong once before.

His color has nothing to do with it man. He's not an SEC caliber player why waste a scholly on a player. We aren't in a position to do that right now. We need players who are going to add depth we have enough guys on the team who aren't SEC quality.

So what is SEC caliber? How do you know that? Because he plays in East Tenn.? Because he's white? Which his color is an issue IMO because how many white Tailbacks played in D1 last year. Only one I remember is the Stanford back?!

Do offers from everyone or a five star rating equal an SEC caliber kid? History shows thats not always true. I want to know how you can say that confidently? Some kids are clearly under the radar for whatever reason and this kid is just one of those. Only a few SEC schools knew this kids name until a few weeks ago. In the fall we will have a better idea of were he will fall based on his offers.

In recent memory there was a kid no one heard of who was a no star named Tyrann Matthieu or the SEC knows as the Honey badger' who was offered by only LSU!!! He was a no star until he went to LSU's camp, showed out and they offered him. He went to UT's camp and did well but Dooley said he was too short. We all know dooley was bad and that Butch n staff are better! The reality is that they are just now taking Cottrell seriously! So my point is its still out rather or not he is SEC caliber...IMO he clearly is SEC caliber based on film, speed and overall SPARQ score!

To compare to Cody Blanc I ask why? Cause he is white with long hair? Cause he is a local kid? His SPARQ is nearly 40 points higher then cody?! He had a better Junior year then Cody and lead his team to their first ever appearance in a state championship game. IMO Cottrell is way better,I saw cody play in high school and have seen cottrell a few times. I always though cody was a safety because he stood out more at DB to me then RB/slot

I think you hit the nail on the head as why most of these folks are not high on this TB recruit.

Or because his highlight tapes are nothing more than him running in a straight line past defenders. No upfield cuts, lack of shiftiness, and limited yards after contact. He's a fast guy that runs past slow kids. It doesn't work like that in the SEC.

Can there not be one year where there isn't a debate about an East Tennessee kid that has no business playing in the SEC? This is a board about UT recruiting. Clearly UT isn't going to seriously look into this kid, so let the thread die.

If he wasn't from the area no one would even know this kids name.

I am sure he will do well in SOCON.

Every last word of this. Everyone wants to see the local kid do well, but it just isn't realistic for him to end up at UT. With the guys we are in on it just won't happen. If we miss bigtime on a lot of guys he could possibly be a take but I doubt that happens. He is one hell of an athlete and he will do very well...just not in the SEC. Maybe he gets an ACC offer...

There might be some bias to a certain race at some positions, but this site blows it way out of proportion.

People have questions because he had a super high sparq score and no offers, not because he's white....

If he keeps winning mvp at all of these rivals camps he is probably going to get a bump, possibly up to a 4 star. Im interested in seeing how all these posters react if that happens.

He definitely has a good shot at ending up with a 3rd star, but no way he gets a 4th. Even if he somehow gets the 4th star, UT is in on so many more higher quality backs it won't make a difference. We don't have to settle on a local kid anymore just because we don't have a shot at the top guys. It is what it is...no slight to Nathan whatsoever.

And that's the slight right there. Nobody here knows for a fact whether Cottrell is SEC/UT material at this point, but there's sufficient evidence to suggest that he may be.

It's just silly, IMO, to dismiss him outright because he's a local product and/or because he currently lacks any major offers. At this time last year, Xavier Hawkins didn't have any either but we all know where he's headed.

Cottrell and Hawkins have received a grand total of 0 SEC offers and 1 BCS offer.

Where is the "sufficient evidence to suggest that he may be SEC/UT material?"

No one is dismissing him because he is from East Tennessee. Jones has offered several East Tennessee prospects. People are dismissing him because he doesn't look overly impressive on film and he has gotten no interest from higher-level BCS or SEC schools.

It isn't a slight though and I apologize if it came off that way...maybe I worded it poorly. In the past, if we missed out on the big names we would in fact take a chance on a kid...local or not. I don't see that as the case any longer. I think Nathan is an unreal athlete and if we could take 30+ like last year I would take him in a heartbeat so no I'm not just outright dismissing him at all. I just don't feel as though he is a definite take when you are dealing with a smaller class. I wish him nothing but the best of luck.

SN: all this is simply JMO and how I see things going with our recruiting now. No disrespect to anyone intended...

I think you need to rewatch his highlights! He does make several upfield cuts! They are just very quick, And he is a cut once and upfield guy. Just not really shifty, thats what you need out of an SEC speed back! One cut get upfield! Cause everyone is fast in the SEC!

Devrin Young is as shifty as they come(barry sanders like in high school) but has not worked well in the SEC so far! I hope he has a break out year with Lane and Hurd.

IMO he is an SEC speed back in the right system! Is that UT?! I have said I did not think they would offer but someone in the SEC will before its all said and done. I also think they could miss big with cottrell cause he has speed few have. And i think hes a great RB and not just a great athlete. Someone in the SEC will offer

Truly believe one of the ways UT use to win was stacking the best ath/rbs and coaching them into different positions when another RB worked out. In the 90's-2000's many years our entire LB core and DB core were former great High school RBS/ATH's

Best of luck to him, honestly. If our coaches think he is worthy of a scholarship in the end then I will roll with that.

so our coaching staff went out and got Vpearson and Malone and were kicking ourselves that they didnt land Xavier Hawkins

is this serious?

This is spot on. He may be just an under the radar type of guy who goes to college and blows up. But with us taking a smaller class this year he's not worth the risk.

Bruce...and it ain't even close. Cottrell is better athlete, but Bruce is by far the better football player.

To say its not even close? Thats crazy! I'd say you must be a relative or someone close to Bruce. Have you watched tape on both?

Bruce is good and definately worth looking at but they are very similar. Bruce I'd say is the better CB by far! Your saying Cottrell is the better athlete because that's a fact in him killing Bruce's SPARQ score. I'd say Bruce is more shifty but he plays in a zone offense... Cottrell plays in a veer which is quick hit. Would like to see him in a Zone scheme. But both are speed backs...both should get big D1 offers. Both showed up in big games and both dominated running the football.

I'd say its very close but maybe down to which ones style you like! Both are special IMO but to say not even close is foolish. I think there both way better then Rollins IMO.

They could face each other in 5A playoffs this next year...guess will see

Nope, not related at all. I've seen film on both as well as seen them both play in person. And I'm gonna stick by what I said. Cottrell is the better athlete, but Bruce is by far the bettter football player. Athleticism only takes you so far. Just wait until you see Cottrell in the college game where everyone is great athletes. He is succeeding on speed and athleticism alone in HS. Bruce imo is the football player and who I would recruit and want on my team before Cottrell.

So I guess it's fair to ask, are you a relative of Nathan's or Close2Cottrell?
