'15 TN ATH Nathan Cottrell

All comes down to who commits when IMO.

IF the staff decides to take a 2nd RB and with Kamara looking like a 2 team battle, he could snatch that spot pretty quick.

If Jefferson decides to be a Vol this summer, WR is done IMO.

IF Martin is already onboard at CB, IMO that leaves 1 spot left. Ordway, Brazil, Reynolds, and several others could grab that last spot fast.

I'd only take 1 JUCO DB. Sutton will have the option of 3 and gone. It would be wise to invest in Ordway, Reynolds, or Abernathy.

Does he have good hands, what about his agility, toughness, does he know the game. There are a few more questions I want to know about the kid. Now I know he can fly no question about that but so could leonard Scott vol fans. Him running at the camps is great for the kid a great exposure for him but I will trust the coaches and there opinion.

He has good hands, his agility testing is off the charts but he hasn't demonstrated much of that as a RB in his video. He's more of a one cut and go type of back in HS where he simply cuts and outruns everybody. Who knows, with his agility testing, he could have some serious elusiveness, maybe we'll see that during his senior year.

I'm with you, I trust the coaches on whether or not we offer. I lot will ride on how he competes and performs at our camp.

A day after running a 4.3 at Wofford, West RB Nathan Cottrell runs a 4.36 at Duke. He ran a 4.35 at Nike SPARQ in ATL in March.

If he clocked a 4.36 at Duke, I'd expect to hear they have offered.

I have to disagree with the "his caliber not panned out" comment. I see him as DY but with a bit more speed. IMO DY has done well at UT. He has accounted for a lot of yards on special teams and has done alright on offense. Would not be surprised to see him do even better this year.

Well to be honest with all they hype DY came in with he hasn't panned out. DY was suppose to be a hell of returner and honestly he has been serviceable. No TD's, doesn't really change field position much, and no one is afraid to kick to him. He's a one cut and get tackle type of guy.

We have been waiting a long time for DY to "breakout" I wouldn't be surprise to see either my boy Vic shows to be a better option.

If he wants an offer he need to camp with TN, LSUs of the world not Furman/wofford

In a class hard on numbers we aren't taking a risk at a position that we don't need alot of players at.

Where does he play?

RB? Well we just signed 3 studs last year and have 1 commit with a big shot at landing Alvin Kamara to be the RB in the previous class that we missed on. I'm taking Kamara and Reid all day over Cottrell and Reid

WR? We all know the stacked numbers we have there and that we are not taking more than 2-3 WRs which we have Preston Williams and likely Van Jefferson taking possibly the only two spots unless another elite kid wants to be the 3rd guy.

There is no spot

Yeah he seems to be trying to make a splash at smaller schools with the hopes bigger schools will take notice. He needs to be at UF, UT, LSU, USCe, UGA etc every weekend to prove he's as good as advertise. If he dominates at a camp like that then everyone will be sending him offers.

Running a 4.30 doesn't make you one of the fastest players in the country?

No, it simply means you have one of the fastest 40 times. Doesn't necessarily mean you can play.

Again, the coaches still, at this point, see no reason to offer this kid.

While our coaches may not offer, the kid does play football. He is a football player. His 1900 yards rushing tells me he is a player. He may not be in the cards for UT, but I'd bet someone gets a good player in Cottrell.

I trust the coaches and their evals. If they offer tomorrow, then great, that's enough for me.

Until that time however, I'm tired of hearing about 40 times...

Luckily for you, this thread is not on the summer required reading list. Bye.

So 275 offers out, enough to fill 11 classes. This kid still doesn't have one.

Maybe, our coaches see something the armchair coaches on VolNation don't?

This is not directed at you Leb, thanks for the number.

The volnation talent evaluators wanted Cam Newton at Tightend. So I'm sure our coaches see stuff we don't!

Maybe a random kook said that, but there are very knowledgable and football experienced posters in the recruiting forum.

It cracks me up how ppl will take rivals, scout, etc analysts opinion as truth when most of those guys never played the sport.

But if someone on VN says something than it's automatically "couch coach" or some other mockery.

I personally think there is way to little information to go on with Cottrell. He won't be playing RB in the SEC. Hopefully he is being worked at slot at these camps...

I agree, his position would be slot at the major college level. If he really wants to play RB in college, it'll have to be at the Woffords, Furmans and Elons type schools.

If he keeps running sub 4.4's at camps this summer he'll pick up some good offers.

^^^ this. Eventually some big name programs will take notice of it. Legitimate 4.3 speed isn't a common commodity.

So there is Natural Speed which is God given speed that guys like CP and Eric Berry play with.

Then there is trained speed which is what you use to run the 40 time. That is what Nathan Cottrell runs. His tape is in no way 4.3 speed. His tape should look similar to De'Anthony Thomas if he plays at 4.3 speed. This is why he hasn't received many offers. When you look at the Sparq numbers it doesn't match the tape.

Based off of his stats alone from last season he should have an offer from Memphis or Vandy soon.

Not sure I buy it. DT played his HS ball in Cali. Cottrell plays his HS ball in TN. How often does NC really need to be at 4.3 speed to actually score a TD vs his competition? I'd imagine you would see it a lot more on DTs film as there are more 4.4-4.5 type athletes he is playing against. The fact DTs film was a lot more pinball type runs and him having to make so many more people miss speaks to that. NC just gets the edge and he is gone. How would he look if he had faster guys playing defense against him? That is the question I suppose. Last time I watched the NFL combine, they still use the 40 as a measurement of speed. God given or not, speed is speed.

I agree with this somewhat. You make some good points.
I suppose all I'm trying to say is 4.3 speed is so rare that a big time program will give him a shot in hopes that they can mold his athleticism to fit their scheme.

People sure took a lot of stock in Clowney's 40 time...You know, for it to be so worthless.

could be more of a problem with how obsessed people are over 40 times than a reflection of it really mattering.
