I really do wonder how much of this was UT saying "we'll take you... but as an OT".

Dylan wanted to play SDE but with what we have on roster and what is coming in... I doubt Jackson would see any significant playing time at SDE as he is not versatile enough to play either side as a big guy like Barnett, at least in my opinion.

Jason Witten wanted to play DE. CPF told him his future was at TE, but he gave the kid a shot at DE, anyway. Witten was very disappointed when moved to TE. Now he's likely a Hall of Fame TE.

Randall Cobb was determined to play QB in college. CPF was honest with him, said he'd get a chance at QB, but his future was at WR and returning kicks. Cobb went to UK, where he was promised he'd play QB. After a token shot at QB, they moved him to WR and had him returning punts, where he excelled. He's now a star WR in the NFL - just like CPF told him.

Fred Weary came here wanting to play DL. The coaches gave him a shot, then moved him to OL, where he had a nice NFL career.


The moral? 25% of college football players end up playing a different position than they played in high school. Sometimes, a person who's been coaching longer than you've been alive knows a little more than you do about which position you should play.

this is a good post. and its reality. in this day and age of "let the kid be who he is" parenting. sometimes its good to lean on that elders experience.

With Hendrix out, this hurts a bit. I've said all along that he is a DE all the way. LSU seems much less wishy washy about where they'll put him. That's how it goes I guess.

I think if he felt as wanted by our staff as he does by LSU he wouldn't be decommitting...... I find the timing interesting and hopeful regarding Phillips just leaving campus

I like Jackson BUT I like Phillips and Walker more. IF we're recruiting Jackson as a DE then I would prefer the other two to him, IF we're recruiting him as an OT he probably transfers anyways as set as he is on playing end.

Bingo! Very interesting timing, indeed. Makes me think that the coaches feel very very good about where we stand with Phillips.

Likely very little or none. Scott from NC, Hendrix from IL, and Helm from...IN? Somewhere well outside TN.

Nah, he has had a longstanding relationship with LSU, Chavis has been working him for a while to LSU. It was always going to be a battle to keep him, even though he was committed it always seem to have an LSU feel to the way this would end IMO. I'm just surprised it took so long.

The players leaving probably will be used against us as far as negative recruiting but as far as I know he had no real connection to any of these guys.

I don't think it reflects poorly on the coaches, but the excuse is always "we have no depth, or experience!"

Ive been trying for a year to get a job in Knoxville so I can move there and be in such a beautiful place and this knucklehead wants to leave it and move to Baton Rouge? SMH
