'15 TN WR Van Jefferson

From growing up in bama I know they went 4-9 in 2003 and then their biggest ooc game for 4-5 years was southern miss, so the schedule wasn't loaded with marquee games while they were going through a downtown.

UT usually schedules one and it's taken us out of a bowl game more than once. Since 2006 we've played cal×2, ucla×2, oregon×2, an nc state team that was supposed to be good, and Oklahoma this year and next

Oregon, Cal, and UCLA had nothing to do with us not making a bowl game. Poor recruiting and coaching lost every one of those games. Fulmer messed his britches on both of the trips to Cal and UCLA.

I admit Oregon had much superior talent than we did both years we played them but what is Oregon's record against the SEC? Who have they beat besides UT and Miss ST? Lower tier teams. The problem is our non-competitiveness, not the schedule. If and when we recruit and coach at a high SEC level we will win OOC and bowl games that count. The recruiting is coming along. Now it is time for player development and game day coaching.

Well we did buy out north carolina so the argument that UT would never do that is null. I don't care either way but you can't say UT doesn't play anybody because somebody doesn't want to play tosu every year

"We" was Dooley/Hamilton...going with that on your tombstone? :glare:

Three small differences in Brown and Van....

1. Brown was a Memphis kid

2. Butch wasn't here then.

3. A drunken, cursing Oger was recruiting him for the Vols.

As far as instate, Butch and staff have got who they wanted. There's been a few exceptions. Josh Smith joining his bro at Vandy. And Bars to Notre Dame. His family have all played up north.

If there's a kid in the Midstate that Butch truly wants, I won't bet against him.

There you go, a slight, surgical type of adjustment.

Ed Ogeron screwed that one up.. Grandma fell in love with Richt.

He certainly did like he did with Jabriel Washington. Ed was great with inner city kids but it didn't play well with those who weren't. His mistake was thinking that every African American kid and family responded to the same things. Some families didn't like the stereotyping. and who would, and wrote the Vols off the list.

Maybe UT is not pushing as hard for a few of these guys as some fans think. The thinking that CBJ will "make room" for the guys with more *'s may just not be the case.

Hate seeing a talented instate kid end up elsewhere, but WR is one position I'm not really worried about right now.

Agree

I agree with that. My argument was with the Bama not lowering their standards when until recently their ooc schedule was nowhere near the strength of Tennessee

Very well said 🔽🔽🔽
Bama has won 3 of the last 5 national titles playing schedules in the 20-50 SOS range nationally. Vandy is being heralded and praised on high nationally for back to back 9 win seasons vs by far the worst/easiest schedule in the SEC. Ohio St was 1 win away from playing in the nc title game last and we all know how stupidly easy their schedule was.

We' re gonna play 5 preseason Top 25 SEC teams this year (Georgia, Bama, OleMiss, SCar, Mizzou) which will already provide us plenty of schedule strength, plenty of challenge and competition to satisfy the stupid "if you're gonna be the best, you gotta beat the best" mouth breathers on here. Why the hell should we go and play an OOC top 5 team in Okla, which now gives us the second most difficult schedule in the country, when we're struggling to gain confidence and wins? We're coming off 4 straight losing seasons, first time since world war 1 or something. I wish we would've found 4 winnable OOC games and then go into sec play with confidence and health....and more than anything else, 4 damn wins.

I have been preaching this for a while. The irony behind it all is that we baught out the UNC game and kept the Oregon and Oklahoma games on schedule. I am not sure the logic here. Scheduling a respectable mid-major team such as NC State, UNC, Rutgers, WV, etc. would have been a MUCH better approach than adding another sure loss to our schedule. Poor decision making IMO. Alabama has done a great job in tailoring there schedule to fit there strengths. It 's called being smart.

Bama's strength of schedule is low because they play Vanderbilt and Tennessee every year. Their SOS suffers every year due to the fact that every SEC team they play is ranked below them.

Ours is high because we play Bama and the top 3 of the SEC East every year along with one strong OOC opponent. When we were the top team in the SEC our conference strength of schedule suffered too because the teams we played were ranked below us. It is not that the competition changes, but where your team is ranked within the competition.

Still, my hypothesis is based on fact. Dickey booked UCLA in Memphis as a headliner that helped build his program in 1965. Majors had games against Notre Dame, Southern Cal, and UCLA in the late 70's to build notoriety for his program. Recruiting was enhanced in both situations. Fan interest increased during both of those eras. If you want to be a national program you have to act like it. Just like Florida State and Miami in the 70's and 80's. They wanted to play anybody, anywhere, and anytime.

You do not lower your standards because you are not winning. I dislike Alabama with a passion, mostly because they have never played by the same rules that other SEC teams play by. But I do admire the fact that even on a 3-8 season they never considered lowering their standards.

Otherwise, we need to find a conference that meets our coaching and talent capabilities.

Alabama does not play Vanderbilt every year....after this year of not playing them it'll be 3 times in the last 11 years.

Disagree with your other thoughts as well. This is not about having to switch conferences because we've been down for 6-7 years. That's ridiculous. If we were a Top 25 team this year, facing 5 other top 25 teams would still add up to one of the more difficult schedules in the country. I'm simply saying that it's prudent to play a reasonable OOC schedule that doesn't include traveling to top 3 opponents for an utter and complete ass-whipping until we're in a position to be competitive again and not a national laughingstock. In 2015-2016 I think we'll be in a position to take on all comers. Just not this year and we sure as hell weren't ready to last year.

What exactly did we gain by going to Outzen stadium and being humiliated after being on the wrong end of a 59-0 run?? I suppose the answer, as usual is, "well, ya know, if you wanna be the best, you gotta beat the best..."

We bought out NC because Dooley and Hamilton were hicken &^*t. There are always people talking about buying out contracts on OOC games because we choose to play a solid OOC schedule to sell our program on a national level.

Hamilton is the only AD we have ever had that wanted to do this. Thankfully, he is gone now.

Incidentally, in this video interview, Van specifically states that he would like to take official visits after making his public commitment. However, if the coach of the team to which he commits is adamantly opposed to that idea, Van will respect his wishes. See Scout.com - College and High School Football, Basketball, Recruiting, NFL, and MLB Front Page.

Sounds like something that happens with Vol commits a lot...commit and only visit Tennessee afterwards.
