'15 TX QB Quinten Dormady (UT Commit 6/9/14)

I think that the staff has set their sights on Dormady as our QB next year. They gave his Dad the playbook to use this year to get QD used to the plays, which in effect is an extra year of practice so that when he gets to the Hill he's already familiar and ready to run the O. I can't remember if he is an EE (and to lazy to look it up) but if he is, spring practice will be his time to show that he has what it takes. JMHO.

Well, just because Dormady got the playbook doesn't really mean that. It just means that his Dad - as coach and father - was willing to (or even asked to) implement a bit of the playbook. Butch would never turn down a free extra year of acclimation to his system. I'm sure Jennings would be running it too if his Dad were coach.

Don't read too much into it as signaling what Butch expects to happen. But, you are right that it very well could end up swinging things in QD's favor.

You're right. I don't really mean that QD has a lock on the job (poor job of wording on my part).

I just hope to get a qb that has pocket awareness. There are a bunch of qbs that are fast that get killed in the pocket, and some that couldn't outrun me that almost always avoid the rush by a well timed step up, or sideways shuffle to buy just enough time to complete a pass. It's an art. It also will help to be smart enough to detect where the rush is coming from presnap. I love Worleys heart and toughness, but he is oblivious to everything around him during a play.

Why? Have you seen anything from peterman or Dobbs that makes you think either one has it locked down? I think QD had a decent shot to start......IMO

Peterman holds onto the ball too long. He showed better passing ability than last year up until now, though so I still have hope in him. Dobbs is #2 this year. They are just wanting to RS him and that is why he is not listed #2 on the DC. QD is still in HS. Just because Jones and Bajakian are giving some help to Mr. Dormady to help Quinten along with the offense here at UT it doesn't meant they have him plugged as #1 next year. Actually, I truly think that they saw a way to help QD advance a little more before getting on campus where the real understanding of the offense begins. Even with Jones and Bajakian's "help" this season what QD will see this January when he enrolls will be miles more deep than what he is getting now. Jones just saw a chance to get a small headstart.

I will be very surprised if QD is our starting QB next year.

Not me. He is an EE and appears to be very good. IF not him, then Jennings may surprise everyone with his passing skills. Either way, I think both will see playing time. That bing said, The 16 commit from NC is likely the best passer of the entire group. He seems to be special.

We shall definitely see what happens. One thing is for certain is that we are getting some good athletes at that position. :hi:

I don't expect him to be the starter as a true freshman either for the reasons listed below.

1. Our staff has shown deference in the past for experienced guys who know the system.

2. Unless our OL takes a HUGE step forward, having a QB who is a bit more mobile will be a big plus for the offense. I'm not sure if 18 yr old Dormady is quite ready to take the kind of pounding Worley is taking this season and I expect our OL to better, but not so much better that our QBs will have a clean pocket most of the time.

3. The learning curve of our offense is seriously steep for QBs/WRs. Yeah Dormady's dad "installed Butch's offense" at his HS, but it will be night and day for him once he gets on campus. Remember how Dobbs "memorized the playbook" before he got on campus? There's a huge difference between understanding the offensive concepts and executing them on the field. This isn't a Chaney offense where you can stick in a kid with a big arm and tell him to throw it to your best guy.

I will be surprised if he isnt.

I feel like so many in this thread are setting themselves up for disappointment. QB just isn't a position where true freshmen make a big impact very often. Especially in our offensive system.

Our coaches have shown in the past that they'll defer to the experienced guy in favor of the young gun at QB.

If you are talking about Jones that's too small a sample size to accurately judge. If you are talking about Tennessee, when we have had a heralded freshman (or two Ainge and Shaeffer in '04) they have started very early.

Also I think those same people are forgetting how difficult being a true freshman QB in the SEC really is.

My preference would be for QD and JJ to RS.

Actually they can make huge impacts as FR this day and age. UT and GA are just 2 that have played several true FR QB's and they have stuck as starters fof most of their careers at the school..And QB's are way more prepared to play early this day and time with HS running similar offenses. And I haven't seen anything from Peterman or Dobbs that instills much confidence moving forward. There are true fr QB's starting all over college football and have the last few yrs. They will play whoever they feel can lead the team, be it a FR or Soph or whatever.

I would be shocked if Dobbs ever starts another game.

I don't understand this way of thinking. Some people around here get their rocks off on crapping all over Dobbs and they literally haven't seen the guy play since last November. How can you honestly evaluate where he's at right now? Seriously...

Edit: I guess you could count the O&W game. But I seem to remember him throwing some nice deep passes to Malone and picking up a fumbled snap and running it 65 yards for a TD. So there's that.
