'15 VA DE Darrell Taylor (UT Signee 2/4/15)

This guy could be this years Barnett.

I mean that in terms of a guy everyone overlooks and turns out to have the biggest impact.

I could see him being a terror on 3rd down.

I think Taylor will be a beast here just not right away. I think he will benefit from a redshirt year and we already have Maggitt and some good pass rushers so why not redshirt him.

I doubt it due to the quality of the players already here. We're loaded with pass rushers.

There is a massive drop off from 1st string to 2nd. Outside of curt and barnett the production drops in more than half. I wouldnt be surprised to see 1 or 2 freshmen DEs in the rotation at some point, also 1 or 2 DTs. We are still building depth and we are doing that extremely well on the defensive side of the ball. If you watch the bowl game i think Iowa scored all their points against the backups, except that one touchdown in the 2nd quarter. They moved the ball almost at will against them. Im no coach but i remember watching and thinking, we are still a few injuries away from trouble. Hopefully this year we finally get somewhat beyond that.

I think spring ball along with another year in the system will help tremendously with that. So will the infusion of new talent.

I think Latroy Lewis is a guy who has quietly made a lot of progress. But I agree with your overall point. We need depth and the freshmen on d-line will get a chance to play.

I was very impressed with Taylor in the Semper Fi game. Just incredible burst and speed off the edge and an incredible frame. He is going to be something special in Knoxville.

He got some work at OLB at Semper Fi right? Could he translate well there in college since we have such a great DL class already or do we think he'll stay at DE?

Totally agree with this. There was a huge dropoff after those two. Some of these freshman coming in are major upgrades in terms of athleticism and overall talent compared to what they currently have on the roster outside of DB and CM.

Yes he lined up at both. I think he's a DE in college because of his frame and burst off the edge...he's going to be able to carry another 30-40 lbs of really good weight in the coming years. But he absolutely has the agility and lateral quickness to be an OLB in college.

Awesome. He'll be one heck of a DE with his lateral movement. Our line will be exciting to watch the next few years

I have my fingers crossed for the second coming of Jevon Kearse with him. We will reload with Phillips and Taylor after Barnett and Maggitt leave.

I saw Latroy's number a few times in the bowl game. He is definately a solid depth contributor at the moment and will probably keep progressing. I still think we've crossed a tipping point with the 2015 class. It seems like a ton of these new freshmen are some big time impact players. Its easier said than done as a freshman but i think we are finding some serious talent like back in the glory days.

Earlier in the season there was a big dropout but toward the end Latroy Lewis really stepped up to lessen than gap. Mixon looked really good at DE in bowl game. I think next year there wont be such a noticeable drop off when Maggitt and Barnett need a breather

I agree. I thought Lewis played very well down the stretch when his number was called.

SIAP but here's the video from 1/3 where he talks about being 100% committed to UT even though VT is after him hard.

He said the coaches told him he'd have a hybrid role.

I think this kid ends up being our Maggit/Weatherd-hybrid-OLB-but-really-DE replacement.

I think it was a couple years ago that Auburn was rotating 12 guys on the DL. Was a big part of why they dominated in the 4th Q. Would love to have that type of rotation, especially at DT, but at DE too.
