How many did CBJ and staff take over the spots they KNEW that had to get to 85 last NSD?

That number would be zero.

Could they choose to risk it and try doing it? Sure they could. Them telling kids like Chris Lammons, DJ Smith, and others No last year around NSD tells me there is very little chance they take kids they don't actually have a place for this year. When you take more kids than you have room for your in a spot to get burned. If the staff chose not to do it with all the quality kids wanting in last year, I don't see them doing it this year.

That's apples to oranges. Last year's class was limited by the number of back-counts and 25 cap. Dews would already be on campus otherwise.

The numbers always seem to work themselves out every year do to graduation, transfers, or leaving early. There are 13 SRs with schollys plus several that transferred. I believe there will be more that transfer before next years class gets here. I'm not going worry about the numbers.

I don't know, I think dew might have needed to go to prep school anyways to give him extra time to mature physically since he's so young coming out of HS.

I believe there are 12 SRs on scholarship as of today including the one just given to Gilliam.

The issue this year will be the 85 number. It does not matter if the kid is an EE or not, he still counts toward the 85.

Carter is now listed as a walk-on.

Yes, but the majority won't count until after the Spring 2015 semester. We have one year's worth of dismissals, transfers, and players hanging it up to account for. My point is that people need to give up counting the number of available scholly's just on NSD 2015.

I know we're still in the honeymoon stage with the 2014 recruits, but there very well could be 1-2 of the incoming players leave before then as well. More likely, upperclassmen will leave after being recruited over in the 2014 & 2015 classes. Doug Matthews said we will see close to the 25 number in this class, so I tend to think we will definitely end up the in the 20's.

I understand that as long as the 85 number is met by Aug 2015 then we are fine over signing kids to fill any spots that MAY become available between NSD and AUG. What I am saying is the same tactic was available to the coaches last class and they chose not to risk it. Why so sure they will do it this year?

It's not AUG yet and we are at 81 scholarship players today. Technically speaking the staff could have signed those 4 ships, plus had they not given one to Swafford and Gilliam they could have taken 6 more last class. Why did they not do it? Because they had no idea those spots would be available at the time. It's a huge risk to take kids with nowhere to put them.

I'm not talking about Saban-esque levels of oversigning, but just a few players. Really just 2-3 over the current limit on NSD. I imagine we will lose a couple over the summer, 1-2 during the year, and a few at the end of the season. All this, plus the expected attrition next spring and summer, and, voila! You have virtually a full class of 25 players.

I suppose IF they choose to over sign this year, I'll then know going forward they would do it. Looking at last year, they did not.

He is a special OL because he can play all 5 positions. That allows flexibility in the numbers for the staff. Below is from an article a year ago.

"I kind of grew up a Tennessee fan and my dad has been a Tennessee fan since he was a teenager," Clark explained. "I went to a couple of games when I was younger with my dad and it was pretty cool for us to come back and see Neyland Stadium and it brought back a lot of memories."

That's awesome to watch games with your dad and then get a chance to get to play in that game. That would be awesome for a father to watch his son play football for the college team that both are a fan of. That would be really special.

Not necessarily. Guards have to fleet of foot as they have to pull and get outside to lead block so they are usually a bit smaller than tackles. Tackles on the other hand have to be able to handle an outside/inside speed rush as well as catch a pass on a rare occasion. To say tackles are your best lineman is simply not true. The positions are hard to interchange unless you have a Barrett Jones that can be effective at any OL position.

Lines nowadays are starting to crosstrain at each position. What type of guard you want depends on the scheme. You've seen guys like Larry Allen and his opposite in style will shields.
I hate to say it, but Barrett Jones kept getting pushed in because of Cyrus, Chance warmack, and Fluker. I bet we have some guys on our own vol team who can play guard and tackle.

How exactly does the world cup fit into the "good" equation?

This dude is committing the day the World Cup begins. Gonna be a good day!!

Are you all in with the Netherlands?

When I was finding my way, I began to support Spain, but got turned off by their arrogance, though the football is nice. I'm still trying to get my footing on the national scene. It may be Germany for me. Fortunately, I chose my club, and I'm locked in there. I hate flip flopping.

I'm a German fan myself because of my heritage and I like their style (power and precision). I'm not sure the Dutch will get out of their group. Someone has to go down between Dutch, Spain, and Chile. My most hated teams are Italy and Mexico. I think Argentina finally lives up to their talent and wins the World Cup. That's my World Cup run down. I'll be posting a lot about it in the off topic thread. Sorry to all the haters. :hi:
