'15 VA OT Austin Clark

Just talked to Austin Clark...

He said he had a good visit today and that he was able to sit down with coach Jones and coach Mahoney and talked to them.

Their message, he said, was that he is a priority and a guy they want in this class. He said that was good to hear.

He told me he thinks it's down to just a couple of schools for him and that he is really trying to decide between those schools.

He will release a smaller top group on Friday at the 5-star challenge and them make an announcement next Thursday on TV.

Full story will be out later tonight.

I honestly think a few guys leaving opened a spot for this kid believe he's a vol next week.

I tend to think Malik Brown may not have been a surprise to the staff. I think Riley was. A spot opening they had not anticipated and may have reopened the door here.

I tend to agree with you on that. Contrary to most on here I agree with you on the numbers crunch. I believe we take 20 to 22. I just can't really see a full class of 25 unless a couple more leave.

247 and Scout have him as an OT
ESPN has him as an OG
Rivals has him as just an OL

Question for you football people. Would it be bad to have OT playing OG? Are the skill sets different? I thought you just put the guys too slow to be OT at OG.

Today it's 16. Add 1 more when/IF any more kids decide to end their time early at Tennessee. Pretty simple going forward. Just have to see how the next couple months play out.

Length is a big deal at tackle as well. As to your question I think you want your guards to be better run blockers and tackles to be better pass blockers. So a tackle playing guard could work but would require him to be a very good run blocker.

16 just seems low to me. You may be right in the end but I could easily see Jones finding a way to get 20 in.

Never a bad thing. Tackles play tackle because they're usually the best lineman like Dallas Thomas. You just try to get your 5 best on the field.

Not necessarily. Guards have to fleet of foot as they have to pull and get outside to lead block so they are usually a bit smaller than tackles. Tackles on the other hand have to be able to handle an outside/inside speed rush as well as catch a pass on a rare occasion. To say tackles are your best lineman is simply not true. The positions are hard to interchange unless you have a Barrett Jones that can be effective at any OL position.

It's not just NSD. We count anyone leaving before next summer. Therefore I say 22-23 in this class.

This! There is 14 months before we will have to be down to 85 scholarship players for the 2015 season. There's still an entire season, 15 bowl practices and bowl game, and a spring practice. There will be more guys that decide they are buried on the depth chart and will most likely not see the field, and will decide to leave. There will most likely be a few that leave for other problems...grades (hopefully not), get in trouble (hopefully not), just flat out home sick and not cutting what is required by this staff. I still say we sign 23-25. If not, who cares. I know we sign the best class possible with 110% effort from this staff, and we will fill positions of need.

How many did CBJ and staff take over the spots they KNEW that had to get to 85 last NSD?

That number would be zero.

Could they choose to risk it and try doing it? Sure they could. Them telling kids like Chris Lammons, DJ Smith, and others No last year around NSD tells me there is very little chance they take kids they don't actually have a place for this year. When you take more kids than you have room for your in a spot to get burned. If the staff chose not to do it with all the quality kids wanting in last year, I don't see them doing it this year.

I think we take closer to 24 it was 22 before we lost Carr, Ferguson, and brown. Forgot about Alden Hill he also left. I think we sign closer to a full class.
