'16 D.C. DE/TE Devante Brooks (UT commit 1/15/15)

Think we should still take the kid. Wolf is the starter and Creamer is coming along nicely. Also have Ellis and Bransiel in there for depth purposes, so I think we're okay at the position and can wait on him to get healthy.

Plus Kyle Oliver from this year's class

Edit: and I think Wolf's younger brother is walking on iirc.

Ellis is gone after this year. Outside of Wolf, no one else has proven anything, although I think Branisel will be serviceable. TE is a need this class, as Devante won't be healthy enough to contribute. Offer him a greyshirt, and get another top TE for this class. Still allows him to be a part of TN with ample time to get healthy.

He needs to be part of this class if you ever want to recruit the DC area and Northern Virginia going forward.

So whether or not we take one kid with multiple knee injuries will be the deciding factor for all future players in this region? Sounds a little dramatic to me.

partial tears can heal on their own (usually) with rehab you are fine. if it is a full tear you have to have surgery. not sure on Gilliam's case but i am willing to bet he did a lot more damage to it, which if he had a future in football would have been a major no no. what scares me about Davonte, and scared me when i tore mine (full tear) is the doctor told me if you tear it a second time while still recovering from the first full tear the knee will never be the same. (some freak athletes are the exception of course). i would be interested in knowing when he tore it the first time. more than a year ago and i feel a little more comfortable, less than a year (general time frame for knee to get back 100%) and i am really worried for him.

that being said i wish him the best and hope everything turns out just fine and he can become a Vol

I think Butch honors the scholarship, and if worst case scenario occurs and he can't recover, we Justin Merideth him...like Saban does to perfectly healthy Bama players every year. :)

While I agree with what you are saying, he may not have many or really any options to play big-time college football after this second injury. A lot of power five teams will back away now.

I'm sure they will but someone, even if they aren't power 5, will still take him. If his two choices are take a guaranteed spot at a smaller school or hope a coach keeps his word regarding an EE spot the following season at a bigger school, I can see plenty of kids taking the sure thing.

Also, specifically regarding Brooks, even if the upper echelon of the power 5 conferences start to back away, I'd be shocked if Maryland wouldn't take him as a part of their 16 class in a split second. UVA also.

Rocky Top Talk said the first tear was just over a year ago.

Can't see how greyshirting would make any sense here. It is more than a year until 2016 football season starts, plenty of time for a normal rehab. If anything, I'd like to see him EE to rehab under UT supervision.

I'd just like to wish Devante Brooks well. This is a tough break for a talented player, and I hope he heals quickly, mends completely and has a bright future ahead.

Agree, similar to what went down with Chance Hall.

I'm not saying we should keep him or not, but we should definitely look at other TEs high on our board (which I'm sure we are). Worst case scenario I think we should GS him. Yes, to me it makes sense. I doubt he's going to be ready to play in 13-14 months. 2 back to back ACL tears is harder to come back from than just one.

Like others have said taking him outright makes sense too as we have experience and depth on the roster already. We are young and talented at TE.

I wonder if the recruiting services will lower his ranking because he is injured. Rivals and ESPN did that with Preston Williams last year.

Absolutely will. If you're not playing due to injury, your stock drops.

They will for sure. Two ACLs on same knee is scary and limits your projection in the eyes in rankings. It wouldn't surprise me if we tried to get him to blueshirt. Perfect situation. Still enroll with current class and allows us to take another player for the class on NSD

My wife is no career athlete but surgery was essential. Don't know who you've been talking too. Everyone i know whose gone through it had surgery.

If ACL tear is partial, may not need to have surgery. No surgery on complete ACL tear equals significant arthritis without fail.

Earl Campbell played most of his college and all pro career with no ACLs. After his career, he had crippling arthritis of both knees. Eventually had TKAs.

ACL helps keep correct alignment.
Just like a car, you can drive for a while owhen out of alignment, but it quickly screws up the tread on your tires...
Cartilage is the equivalent of the tire tread.

Depends on your knee stability. If you recall, Gilliam played on a torn acl. How? Lots of muscle around the knee. Some people, like me have no meat around their knee joint.

But Gilliam has had his repaired by now for sure.
Short term, only painful. Long term no repair equals much more damage. Gilliam wore a brace the whole time...

Can I go to MIDAS to get my knee re-aligned?
:)

braces aren't a magical cure. really once he tore and didn't have surgery the braces weren't "protecting" anything. the knee was still going to slip around without the ACL and tear up the cartilage (long term pain).

or maybe a better way to put it was the braces were protecting nothing in the ACL area.
