'16 D.C. DE/TE Devante Brooks (UT commit 1/15/15)

So they are an unrecruited player that shows up to school without a scholarship? Sounds a lot like a walk on to me...

Sure...if walk-ons automatically get their education paid for when the school year begins? Just like a walk-on.

Yes, but unlike a walk-on they are placed on scholarship almost immediately

I know they obviously aren't exactly the same thing, but the guy described it as similar to a walk on, which it is even though Butchna crapped on him for it. It's a walk on with a gentlemen's agreement. Plus, any decent instate student gets free tuition at UT, so the scholarship portion doesn't necessarily apply. Those guys aren't "paying" anything.

Edit: Brooks isn't instate, but nothing official has come out about him blueshirting either. Personally, I'd only really consider it an option with instate guys.

Blueshriting is walking on with a promised scholarship first semester. (Joc Bruce)

Preferred walk ons are walk ons that are more "recruited" and promised the opportunity to earn a scholarship. (Devaun Swafford)

Walk ons are players who enroll in school and try out for the team (Derrick Brodus)

I'll tell my Dean's list achieving niece that she's an idiot then, her parents have been paying heavy the last three years! :ermm:

Nope, she was a RA the last two years...tuition.

I won't bore you with links, but instate tuition is listed as as $11,246. Hope + Merit is $5500 and UT's Volunteer Scholarship is $6,000. That's $11,500. Maybe her uncle should've helped her do research on scholarships...

I make a good living but I felt that my retired Navy and current schoolteacher brother-in-law and nurse sister were capable in searching all avenues. I'll be sure to inform them that some self-important dingleberry on a message board says that they've been donating money to the university the last three years.

Edit: (From my sister)
We figured hers is around 19,000 but she gets a 3000.00 discount for ******* being a TN teacher.

No volunteer scholarship here. Hope is only one semester too ! They also make every student purchase meal plans which are over 3000.00!

***** is always on the Deans list too so far.

End communication

Or you could just, you know, admit you were wrong? I made a point, you called me out, and I proved my point. Now you're resorting to insults...

I have been pleasantly surprised by the commits in the past several days. Is there a relationship between the beginning of camp season and commitments? Recruiting has been fairly slow in terms of commitments over the past several months. I just assumed that we wouldn't hear much until the fall. And now we get 3 important commitments in less than a week. Just curious if this has happened in the past.

The numbers issue as well as the projected class is always good off-season discussion material. I'm with those looking for a 2016 class in the 18-22 range. I doubt CBJ will use the blue shirt option in the 2016 class because the 2017 class is absolutely loaded. We will need every available spot for 2017.

Look at my edit champ

Ok, so you're dealing in some sort of crazy family math. Factually, tuition is $11,200, not $19,000. If they're factoring a meal plan, that's not tuition. As for the hope portion, it's not only 1 semester. Here's what the website states:

Four-Year Institutions and two-year institutions with on-campus housing: Up to $2,000 per full-time enrollment semester; including summer

I'm done with this debate. You're wrong, so let's just let my original statement stand and move forward.

On topic, I think Brooks is going to be a productive TE, but for a Big10 or ACC school. Two knee injuries in a row is definitely unfortunate for the kid...

Ok...so long as food isn't a factor huh? :) 19,000 is a hard number that REAL people pay PER YEAR at UT. Maybe somebody's Mommy and Daddy got tired of him playing 24 hour video game marathons in a cloud of "burnt incense" after quitting Taco Bell because "The boss knows I can do his job better!" Suddenly magical scholarships appear and the little tiger is off to school...majoring in General Studies. :)

Maybe. I don't think he re-injured his knee but more didn't heal from the initial injury as expected. Taking a guy in a small class who is 2 years removed from football with an injury prognosis that is up in the air is a big risk. I think they'll honor his offer if he shows a lot of progress between now and signing day.

To Kristy's earlier point, I don't think we take a full class this year either. Last year Butch said we would be taking at least a full class, but Leb kept arguing otherwise. This year, if I'm not mistaken, Butch has said our class will be smaller. I'm gonna roll with what CBJ says. We don't seem to have as much fat to be trimmed on the roster anymore.

OVERALL TRAITS
Size-Strength-Speed
Possesses excellent overall size at this stage. Tall prospect with adequate bulk and a frame that can continue to be developed. Flashes very good playing strength with room to continue to improve as he further physically develops. When healthy possesses above average speed for size.

Separation Skills/Big Play Ability
With combination of size and speed can threaten the seam. Needs to work on release when challenged as well as further develop to be a stronger route runner. Flashes ability to use size to shield defenders, but needs to continue to learn to use his size and strength more to his advantage. Big and can be physical, but not a real elusive runner after the catch.

Ball Skills
Displays solid hands and flashes ability to extend and snag passes over his head. Demonstrates adequate body control to adjust to passes off target. Can let the ball get into his frame at times and can continue to strength pass catching skills. Displays good concentration to catch ball in traffic.

Blocking
With size, strength and willingness to give effort and be physical, displays good upside in this area. Needs to refine placement, but when he gets hands on and drives his knees, has the strength to push defenders off the ball. Does need to watch pad level as he can play high and get stalemated, but will work to stay with blocks with enough size to wall-off defenders.

Bottom Line
Brooks is a prospect that has played on both sides of the ball and could receive interest as a DE, though his best fit at this time looks to be on offense. Prospect that brings some very good tools, but has unfortunately battled injuries. Missed his junior year with an injury and suffered an injury again in the spring that will impact senior season. If healthy he has ability as a college TE to be a good receiving target and potentially strong blocker. With a hopefully healthy return can develop into a productive if not very good college player.

Underclassman Eval
STRENGTHS: Brooks has the raw physical attributes to be a contributor on either the defensive or offensive side of the ball. Shows good hands in traffic and has solid blocking skills. He is an effort type of player that does not shy away from contact and he has the tools to develop into a solid player in the trenches. Displays range and foot speed as a TE or DE. ...
AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT: Needs to refine his route running and pass catching skills. Will benefit from adding bulk to his frame, which will in turn aid in his progression as a blocker. ...
BOTTOM LINE: Brooks is raw and inexperienced but his athleticism and versatility will help in his development as a player offensively or defensively.

Doubt it. Butch has a record of sticking with kids if they get injured in high school. Chance Hall is the obvious example here.

With his injury, do we drop him for a healthy contributor?
We took a commitment from Pope for that. I think the staff sees Brooks as a huge upside guy so I doubt we drop him. I think his injury gave Pope the green light a long time ago though
