I gather they are separate events.

All I would like to hear is that he did something that turned us off and not the opposite. Don't really need to know details beyond that.

That's what they're saying over there that whatever happened Friday turned the coaches away for whatever reason.

So it was him, not us. Like I said, that would probably make a big difference if it comes out. It would actually help us that we backed off.

Roger that. I do wonder if it was something UT did directly or something he did while here. That would make a huge difference in public reaction if it came out.

The way I'm sort of taking it, connecting the dots (sorry Sam), is that he did something Friday that was inappropriate and that sealed his fate with the Vols. One poster is saying it was bad and compares it to something that happened with a former UT player but I'm not going to say it because I don't think it's appropriate. The way the poster is saying it would hurt UT is by saying if it came out it would show we don't look after the kids on their visits and could be used against us in the future with recruits. It could be as simple as he got drunk, who knows? So filter it as message board hooey,

Gotcha. I'll try and push my curiosity aside. Thanks.

If money was involved....everyone would know about it. Martha was working 2 jobs to support her family and James works at the county jail. They have lived in a small apartment for the last 7 years I have known them. I know there was a lot of pressure and stress on the family over this decision, I'm guessing the relationship with Garner was the deciding factor.

I'm not putting any stock in these rumors when it could simply be sour grapes and trying to explain away our failure to sway him. If a member of the VQ team mentions it, I'll change my view.

I agree. The only thing that makes me wonder is one of the guys is trying to get the others to shut-up about it as it doesn't need to come out.

Then log off. I choose not to censor myself because some debbie downer who brought negativity to every thread this last month has a problem with it. Not my fault you and others don't deal in reality.

so youd rather discuss unfounded theories about a HS kid saying he may or may not have taken money, that of which none of us have any idea of what we're talking about? that sounds merited in reality. and completely logical.

Respectfully disagree, I've seen people say we could sign as many as 23. Adding most of the guys we are still very in on would boost us to number 4 currently. Factoring in the increases in the classes for other teams as well, my prediction if things go well is final ranking of 9.

Well we signed everyone Except Brown and stole a second Miami commit and still didn't get above 14 in any recruiting service ratings....

No more illogical than your take on this past year's recruiting cycle. What's worse was that information was available from respected sources that contradicted a lot of what you posted. And who says they are unfounded theories? Lester is a known bagman who apparently bumped into Brown during his recruitment. Pat Dye was one of the dirtiest coaches in the history of college football, and there is a photo op of the 2 together. And Auburn's history in general. Again, this is a message board not a safe space. Take that PC nonsense somewhere else.

We were 11 or 12 on average ranking per recruit on the recruiting services which is more telling than a school that loaded up on 3 stars and more spots to offer.

This is a much better way to evaluate this class. Also, there are players that were just starting to blow up that would have been ranked higher, if they would have waited longer to commit, ie. Pope. This was a lot better class than some think. Overall, I'm very happy with this class!

Why are people concerned about where we rank in the recruiting rankings? Not like someone is going to get a trophy.

Well, just to counter, it's a fairly good indicator. The team that has held the #1 class the past 6 years in a row? Yeah, they're celebrating their 4th championship trophy in the past 7 years. They've been getting the best talent. It's clearly helped them.

Sort of like Preston Williams and rumors after his Auburn visit (where he wore Vols gear and tried to recruit for the Vols lol). Sour fans creating drama that isn't even necessary.

Coaching has something to do to with it as well.

Does cheating occur in recruiting? No doubt it does but most of it takes the form of illegal contact by surrogates or special privileges at certain places. Rarely is it as overt as giving a recruit a check or brief case full of money. Those types of situations are easy to track but don't think for one second that UT doesn't skirt the boundaries just like other schools. Fact is, you cannot compete with the likes of FSU, Alabama, Ohio State, etc. without doing so because they do. You cannot have it both ways. You cannot be a squeaky clean program and compete for championships nor can you only recruit players who don't have the occasional off the field issue.

I have no doubt that the term "bag man" is a real thing and happens literally everywhere in the country. As an American and a capitalist, I have zero issue with one private citizen giving money to another private citizen. I would have a problem with the school itself doing it, considering that some schools have greater means than other schools.

The schools with greater means will give more than the ones who don't thru the bagmen. Here is the deal with Auburn and doesn't mean anything on Brown. When they need to do so, they do it on a level that is above other schools. Getting a car happens at a lot of schools. Six figures do not. I know a kid that went to OK and played in the NFL got around 5k. Some assist coaches at Georgia went on visit and mom said OK had just left and made that offer. The Georgia coache's said they did not do that stuff and left. One of these coaches later was a HC in college and the NFL. Back then that was more money than what it is worth now but nothing close to what Auburn does.

Alabama has been at the top of said "rankings" for 9 years straight and they have 4 national titles to show for it. Soooooo yeah, someone IS gonna get a trophy lol.

Of course but it's the people who sweat the difference between finishing 14-17 vs 8-10 that are being a little silly. If Guarantano turns into the dynamic play maker at QB that we've been missing and we have the best secondary in college football in 2018, will there be a reason to care that this class wasn't ranked as high as 2015?
