All the DTs are doing well at maintaining their rush lanes. Very few scrambles up the middle because of that. As long as they do that, sacks will happen, although it might not be the tackles who make them.

This, kmack is doing very well. When he's in, runs up the middle just don't happen.

Sarcasm, I agree he has played well. That's why I pointed out the expectations from fans were unrealistic.

I don't think anyone expected him to toss sec starters into the QB "on the reg" ever, let alone as a freshman. Suh, Henderson, Nkemdiche, etc...don't even do that.

My comment was sarcastic, like I said. If you don't think fan expectations for him were unrealistic you weren't paying attention to his thread. I am on mobile so I am not going to take the time to dig up examples so I guess we will agree to disagree.

Fair enough

All I said was he was some interpretation of a Kraken, Centaur-type beast with the breast of a Koidak Bear and the lower body of a Stegosaurus who would routinely damage the field turf and soil as he romped around like a banshee.

Really starting to feel good about getting Brown. The way his Mom was treated so special on the visit. From the start, greeting her with umbrellas, showing her how we would take good care of her son, and them feeling the family atmosphere of the team. Winning the Georgia game, seeing how our fans stayed with our team when we were down and our Vols no quit attitude, fighting back from 21 down showed heart. Then, Mom making it a point to get Derrick to schedule his Tennessee visit right before signing day. Finally, with all the turmoil surrounding Georgia. It just seems like everything is falling into place. It's hard not to see that Tennessee is building something special!

Also, the situation doesn't hurt with a player like Derrick Brown. Most believe Brown is destined for Georgia but we continue to hear and believe it wouldn't be wise to sleep on Tennessee. They are really factors for the talented defensive tackle and are in line to receive one of his final official visits, if not the last one for Brown before signing day.

I believe Peyton Manning is going to retire after this season, and when asked about the prospect of coaching after he retires, he said that as an assistant....sure. As a HC, no. Don't think anyone expected him to be a HC, but perhaps as a QB Coach or OC.

Peyton Manning considers coaching Vols after retiring from NFL | WATE 6 On Your Side

Sounds like all Butch has to do is pick up the phone and ask. If he did join the staff, I think we'll see quite a boost in recruiting...even on the defensive side of the ball. We're right on the threshold of competing for SEC championships +. If it weren't for one holding call (Jumper in OU game) and botched time management at the end of the (UF) game, we are sitting atop the SEC E, right now.

If Peyton could help Dobbs with his consistency and deep ball accuracy, and if we could sign Derrick Brown (and perhaps R. Gary) to rotate with or play alongside McKenzie and Tuttle..we gonna do BAD THINGS, man. I mean BAD things. :)

Anyone think that's why we have a ga coaching qbs? So it's easier to bring Manning in next season? I wouldn't complain.

Could you imagine Peyton walking into a recruit's living room? As long as he doesn't start singing about chicken parm, you can pretty much guarantee a commitment.

Yep. Sure would like to see him go out on top like Elway did. Gonna be hard to beat the Patriots, but Denver's defense is no joke, this year. Going into recruits living rooms, not only as a HOF QB, but having 2 SB rings shining in their eyes....money!

He could sing chicken parm all day and still land recruits.

OVERALL TRAITS
Size-Strength-Speed
Prospect with outstanding combination of height and bulk. Tall with good length and a frame that can continue to be developed with time in a college weight program. Demonstrates excellent playing strength with inconsistent snap anticipation, but above average first-step quickness.

Versus the Run
Big, strong kid that can be tough and even at times dominant at point of attack when he keeps his pads down. Can bring his hands and displays the upper body strength to press and control blockers. Flashes the ability with his size and length to be able to hold up as a two-gap defender. Displays adequate redirect skills, but good range for size and with good angles and effort can be a factor on the perimeter.

Pass Rush Skills
More strictly a power rusher that can deliver a jolt with initial strike and push blockers back and press the pocket when he stays low. Flashes activity, like a swim move, but needs to watch pad level and continue to develop his pass rush arsenal and be sure to have a plan. Flashes awareness to get his hands up when he can't get to the quarterback.

Toughness/Motor
There is some room for improvement in instances, but overall a big man with good straight-line playing speed for size and will give effort to pursue the play and not unusual to see him make a tackle down field or on perimeter. Can deliver a pop as a tackler and capable of being a physical presence though seems he can still squeeze more from ability at times to even be a more dominating force.

Bottom Line
Brown has the tools to be a key starter for an upper-tier Power-5 program and could fit as a DT or 34DE and that versatility should gain him even more attention. Very good prospect, with we feel room to still grow before getting close to his ceiling.

Underclassman Eval
STRENGTHS: Brown is a strong defensive lineman with very good size at this stage and a frame that can support more good mass with further physical development. When he keeps pads low can hold ground and flashes upper body strength to separate and shed. Flashes ability to push the pocket with his size and strength. ...
AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT: Needs to play with a lower pad level as he can be leveraged and pushed around from time-to-time. Can be more consistent in get-off. Needs to work to improve and be more consistent with hand usage. ... BOTTOM LINE: Brown shows some versatility in the ability to play both the DE and DT position. Big man with some tools and shows flashes and with further development and consistency can be productive player.

Also need to keep 'skinny-legs' Peyton and 'high-voice' Peyton out of recruits' living rooms.

“the atmosphere up there is just unbelievable,” said brown, who’s ranked the nation’s no. 8 overall prospect and no. 3 defensive tackle in the 247sports composite for the 2016 class.

“it is something that you have to experience for yourself.”

“when i went up to tennessee, i mean, seeing 84,000 people show up to the vol walk, that was pretty cool,” he said.

“i mean, the second time, they definitely blew us away,” brown said. “we pulled up (in front of) the football office, and, i mean, the whole office is outside. It looked like a sea of orange had just splattered on the ground. It was pretty cool.”
