'16 GA WR/DB Marquez Callaway (UT commit 1/21/2016)

Can't help you on the subscription, however this kid should be someone everyone keeps an eye on going forward. He's a very intriguing prospect due to his ability to play both DB and WR. Our staff really likes players that possess the ability to play both offense and defense aka JJ, Big Charles, Evan Berry, etc. I wouldn't be shocked if our staff doesn't sale this kid on a chance to play early at WR but ultimately move him to DB once practice starts. I could see this kid being like JJ was for us this year. JJ wanted to play QB but soon realized his best opportunity was at WR. I think Callaway wants to play WR, but when he gets a chance to play quality minutes at DB as a freshman, his mindset will most likely change.

Let's just say we don't sign Kyle Davis (which would suck), in addition to Callaway, what will our final WR haul look like? Any guesses? I am assuming we are taking 4, correct?

The way the article read, he and his loved their visit. The way we didn't give up and fought back to win. That really improved our chances even more. He said we were in his top group, in which he named Tennessee, South Carolina, Notre Same, and Mississippi.

“My dad liked the game, because he’s a football fanatic,” said Callaway, who also has attended games at South Carolina and Georgia so far this season. “But I think my mom liked it just as much as he did. They just liked being out there and watching the game.”

He said his parents remain high on the Vols, primarily because of coach Butch Jones’ staff.

“That’s probably the biggest thing (they like), is the coaches,” Callaway said. “They talk to pretty much all the coaches that have talked to me — Coach Jones, (wide receivers) coach (Zach) Azzanni and (defensive coordinator John) Jancek.”

In addition to Tennessee’s comeback against Georgia, Callaway said the sellout crowd of 102,455 caught his attention.

“Their fans probably enjoyed it more than players did, to be honest, especially when they were cheering for the comeback,” he said. “A lot of them could have left, but they stayed and supported them, and that probably helped Tennessee more.”

Callaway said he would be returning to Tennessee on an official visit. He wasn't sure when. It seemed to me that we lead. He didn't come right out and say it though. Mom and Dad look like they are all about the Vols!

I think we've been the team to beat for a while here and I think that lead has expanded. Kind of surprised he hasn't committed yet honestly.

Said he's gonna shock the world, too.

Which means the kid is usually a lock to the team everyone perceives as a favorite and he's messing with the fans.

In the end I think the hometeam pressure gets to him and the family sitch makes him stay. Would like to see a recruit actually "shock the world" on NSD though, we've had some pretty tame NSDs with Butch (not that I'm complaining).

I meant it along the lines of it's one or the other...not both. Maybe we won't take his commitment until Mecole tells us no.

I hope Butch doesnt take that route. Unless something has drastically changed with Mecole that is. From what I get Mecole is pretty much a Dawg.

Agreed. Mecole is one of the best athletes in this class, but Marquez is very good as well. He should be a take with or without Mecole. He's better than some of the guys we have already taken.

I would take Callaway right now regardless of what Mecole is doing. I like him more than a couple of our wr commitments

Thats what I am thinking as well. I honestly think MH is a long shot. Take Callaways commitment now and if MH wants to come abord then its all gravy.

Bump.

Anything on Callaway recently? Haven't heard anything on him since his visit on October 10th. On the 247 crystal ball picks, we are about 50 / 50 with Georgia. That was, of course, before Mark Richt was fired.

Callaway says he wants to play both football and basketball, and only four schools have offered him on both (us, Georgia, South Carolina, and Auburn). I'm not sure how that works being dual-sport in football and b'ball, since the seasons overlap, but might be interesting.

Glen Davis at LSU. There was also a guy at USCe recently who was a pretty good point guard and also played either RB or WR on the FB team and pulled it off pretty well.

Glen Davis didn't play football

You're right. My bad. He was very highly ranked as an O-lineman coming out of high school and people thought he was making a bad decision when he chose basketball over football. Guess it worked out ok for him.
