Hm, thanks for pointing that out. I had some misconceptions about that. Factor in the fact that we play nickel often, don't need as many LBs. Out of that list, how many of the LBs do you think are SEC quality?
Earlier in the year he could've played ahead of Kirkland if Jumper was playing there. That's my problem with them. You find a spot for Jumper and Bynum but Weatherd doesn't have a role. I think Taylor at DE will be hard to beat out. He'll have a much better chance to grow past the hybrid role. Word is he's 245lbs right now.
Eh, we know he probably had the physical tools to play there. But if he never got a shot at MLB, then I'm betting he's not the type of guy who can line up the defense and make all the calls pre-snap. That's the only reason Jumper played over Kirkland early on anyway. He was the best at getting the call and lining everyone up.
We've only ever seen Weatherd play in spots where we line him up and tell him to attack or spy. There's probably a reason for that.
I was thinking use JRM at the MLB in the nickel and Weatherd as the second LB. That would've been better than Jumper being on the field. I believe Weatherd could be a better pro than college guy though.
I could see that being an option, but the counterargument is why move JRM when he is arguably the best WLB in the SEC?
I think he could be a better pro too. He probably should have gone to play in a 3-4 scheme.
I think Smith, Berry (eventually), Sapp and McDowell excluding Kirkland and JRM since they have it locked down.
Though comes think of it it seems like coaches have said Austin Smith is "eating himself into a Defensive end"
His NFL future is as a 3-4 OLB. I could see him being the weakside DE in our nickel package and strongside OLB in 4-3 like Maggitt last year.
Either way he'll be a stud and we gotta find a way to out him on the field as much as possible.
I'm not a fan of recruiting all these hybrid guys when UT doesn't utilize the hybrid position. Hybrid guys are great in an over/under scheme or a true 3-4.
Taylor/Weatherd/Smith/possibly Bonner don't have a position in UT's primary defense. I hope they integrate more next year because Taylor/Smith could be difference makers.
"I love Tennessee. It's a great place. The city is nice even though it's not a real, real big city. It's not like Cleveland or whatever. It was really nice and everything was close by.
"Right now, I'm really open to the three options of Nebraska, Tennessee and Kentucky," Bonner said.
Blair just needs to not come back next year that would make room to get another good high school recruit he has been giving plenty of chanches to contribute to this program and is a waste of scholership.
