'16 PF NC Grant Williams (UT commit 11/13/15)

There were quite a few on here who thought when we offered him there was no way you pass on the Ivy League, it comes down to the kid as I said at the time. Williams wants to play basketball on the biggest stage possible, that makes this an easy choice for him, and tennesse has improved their academic facilities for athletes to the point that he can still be very successful.

I never thought there was no way he'd pass it up, but I did think it wasn't the best choice. Apparently his Mom felt the same way. However, she seems to have relented. Just hope Grant does well at Tennessee. It would be a shame to pass up Princeton or Yale now, then be recruited over in two years and get "processed" out of the program.

Barnes has put himself in a bit of a spot with this one, too. He may have put himself in a position where he can't evaluate Williams like the other kids. Can you imagine facing the kid's Mom in two years if, after talking Williams out of the Ivy League, you decide to not renew his scholarship?

Hell of a post.

If this kid ends up like this people better realize the this side to the story. I pray everything works out for the kid here.

This is much more of a a four year deal than most are. This kid should be guarenteed a 4 year scholarship

Why couldn't he transfer in to an Ivy League school in two years if he wanted? Since there are no athletic scholarships in effect he could play the next year. He would still be eligible for academic aid. What has he got to loose?

You think all his classes would transfers smoothly to an Ivy League school?

Do they even take transfers?

Pretty sure Ivies don't allow transfers, at least not as easily as other schools. The transfer rule would be the same as it would be a transfer from one D1 school to another.

And, if he didnt pan out here, there's a good chance they might not take him for basketball. Those schools really are upgrading. Harvard's class is ranked 25 spots ahead of Tennessee. Yale is likely going to get a commit from Jordan Bruner this week . This isn't your father's Ivy League basketball.

Best thing, for all of us and Williams, is for the kid to be good at Tennessee.

****Edit All the Ivies except Princeton take transfers. This article points out that the large majority go to Cornell - which apparently is most lenient. My point on being accepted for basketball remains the same, though.

They accept kids from other schools into their post grad programs. Why wouldn't they except undergrads?

Not sure if they do or not but even if so many many classes wouldn't transfer is my guess.

Would likely set a degree back a year IMO

Why is it that you think this? Is freshman Comp 101 different at Harvard than at Tennessee? We are talking Gen. Ed. classes here. Why wouldn't those transfer? Sure, some electives might not transfer, but in my freshman year, I was taking almost exclusively Gen. Ed. stuff.

Talking about a kid transferring before he even commits or gets on the court for us...smh. I think we need to let this play out first, and see what the kid can do.

After 1 year it wouldn't be that much of a deal I agree. Once a kid gets into thier actual major then classes very often get lost with a transfer. I also would assume an Ivey league school would even be more picky about what they accept and don't

I always heard from "people" (No idea if they had any idea truthfully) that Ivy League schools are stubborn when it comes to transferring/accepting credits, whether it be something from HS or another university. They might accept the score, possibly give credit, but still recommend taking the class on THEIR campus. I remember when I went through the process of applying, I didn't even bother because I had tons of AP credit that I didn't want wasted or up in the air. I knew UK would accept them for sure so it helped in the choice. I do remember Vandy was willing to accept a lot, but I assume it's different. Of course this is all word of mouth and personal experience so I could be completely off base here.

Just now getting into basketball recruiting again…this guy any good?

According to a lot of experts including Jeff Borzello he is very underrated. Stats from his junior year were: 18 ppg 9.6 rpg 2.3 bpg and 2.7 apg. Those numbers are from the Charlotte observer. Pretty good numbers from a junior. He will have a real test tonight from oak hill academy.

Played very well against tough competition. I also think he's only 17. Thought I heard that somewhere. Lots of room for growth and improvement. If I had to guess I would say he's destined to red shirt his first year.

Redshirt year would be the ideal outcome for this kid, but as we know the ideal outcome usually never happens lol.

Yes he is a year younger than his class. That is a very good thing IMO

Chris Dortch on Twitter: Don't rate UT's recruits by number of stars or who Vols beat out to sign them. All have skills that fit into the program and are coachable.

Very smart College basketball guy, and I agree with this completely.
