'17 CA DT/OL Jalen McKenzie

@ this point McKenzie hasn't been a take because he's been often injured. He still has a chance to blow up during the season but staying healthy is a priority for him or he could end up a preferred walk on

You think he goes PWO at Tennessee over a scholarship from UCLA?

99.9% of the time I'd say no, but who really knows with him. He obviously has a ton of ties to UT and money isn't really an issue for them. I'm sure if he really wants to go to UT (which he seems to) he could easily end up as a preferred walk on with a chance to earn a scholarship. Hard to blame him if he doesn't want to do that though.

I may be wrong, but I thought a preferred walk on couldn't have D1 offers. To prevent Boosters from paying kids ways or something.

Never heard that before. I don't believe you must accept an offer to somewhere you don't want to go instead of walking on where you do.

I don't expect McKenzie to walkon at UT.

Not sure but just what i heard. Health has been a big issue the last 2 yrs per a very reliable source. Plus i was also told he wants to be with K Mc at UT. Dad can pay so there would be no issues.

No knowledge @ all of these stipulations as i know others who hv went this route and had midmajor offers but rather took this route. It might not even be PWO but a blue/gray shirt

I know it gets joked about on here a lot, but honestly if I was Reggie Mc I would gladly pay my son's way to UT.

If UCLA offers here in the next month to 6 weeks as expected, UT will have to offer to get him. I don't think he walks on with a scholarship to the Bruins. He's doing the smart thing taking the scholarship.

The benefits afforded to scholly players over pwo's makes me inclined to agree with you, for once.

If they received the same benefits and the only difference was one paid and the other did not, I would say why not go where you want regardless of the type of offer, considering that money is (mostly) irrelevant to the GM of the Raiders.

As a Vol fan, of course I'd prefer seeing him in Orange no matter how it happened. Step back for a minute and I'd at least have to ask myself if UCLA feels I'm worth a scholarship and UT doesn't, where do I likely get to actually see the field?

What specific differences you speaking of?

The walk-ons, even "preferred", are not afforded the same benefits as scholarship players.

meals
weight room
film room
facilities
travel

there are a lot of disparities.

Out of state to UT could easily end up costing > $100k. I don't think anyone with any business savy at all just tosses it in the trash. If his only other offer is University of Phoenix I understand though.

Even if the LA schools and Oregon offer, I think Jalen wants to play with Kahlil and will come to UT. He supposedly has fully rehabbed his knee. The family tradition at UT will be hard for other schools to overcome. IMO, he's ours to lose.

So you really think Jacob Gilliam wasn't allowed to use the weight room or film room? Or other facilities? That's ridiculous. My brother was a former PWO with the cross country and track teams (yes I know, different sport),and the school never restricted him in any way, from training facilities to meals. Even the equipment was all still free (and they were quite generous with it). If they can do all that for a runner, I promise you the football players are getting it (with the exception of the ncaa limit on travel squads).

The only thing you listed that's is accurate is meals and a walk on would have the option to purchase meals I am certain

The other things would all be available to a walk on if they made the appropriate sections of the roster

He's ours IF we offer a scholarship.

The school waives out of state tuition for most (or all) of those guys. I went to an out of state med school that was way more expensive because I really loved it, and my parents (who make way less than reggie mackenzie) were more than willing to help. I don't think he's going to be a preferred walk on at UT, but the people who act like it's a ridiculous idea clearly have never been in that situation before.

Out of state tuition wouldn't be waived. The NCAA would be all over that

It's also not 100k. More like 40k

Waiving out of state tuition is not an ncaa violation. It happens all the time. They just can't drop tuition below the in state cost to show preferential treatment.

Yeah, as a former out of state tuition payer, Tennessee is extremely cheap compared to other states. Even if it were 100k, what percent of Reggie's salary would that be? I doubt even 5%. Most parents would be thrilled with that level.
