'17 CA DT/OL Jalen McKenzie

So you really think Jacob Gilliam wasn't allowed to use the weight room or film room? Or other facilities? That's ridiculous. My brother was a former PWO with the cross country and track teams (yes I know, different sport),and the school never restricted him in any way, from training facilities to meals. Even the equipment was all still free (and they were quite generous with it). If they can do all that for a runner, I promise you the football players are getting it (with the exception of the ncaa limit on travel squads).

Cross Country. LOL.

Where did I say they aren't allowed access? Of course they are allowed access.

It's been posted on here before by others that they aren't afforded the same LEVEL of access.

You may be confusing the access the summer before enrolling to access the rest of a kids time. That's the only access differences for walk ons that coaches want around fulltime

Could be. I actually don't know first hand, just posting what I had read on here before.

Don't really care, either.

Hope Jmac finds his way to Knoxville.

lol so what, you think they're given different ID's that allow them into different buildings at different times of the day or something? I'd agree that coaches probably aren't as willing to go the extra mile and come in to work with them at any given time, but the idea that their access is restricted is laughable. Zac Jancek isn't sitting there looking like the last unsold dog at the pet store staring through the glass at Dobbs getting a late night workout.

Haha. This comment is funny, because they do actually have different IDs. The full-scholarship guys have that information including in their IDs. When they get on buses to go somewhere for training, they swipe their passes. The non-scholarship guys are charged fees for services that aren't recognized on their IDs; but I'm fairly certain they are refunded those charges. But, yes, they have different IDs and go through different processes to get to the end result.

Fail.

Interesting. Either way, same point: they don't have a restricted level of access to the weight room, meals, training facilities, etc.

Ya gotta spend it on something. I just spent 12 grand on 18 three box cases of upper deck exquisite football cards. I wanted to see what I'd get in each pack. The crazy part, I don't even collect cards.

It happens..

Ain't no way I could deal with 40-50 people around me all the time. Even if they are friends, I'd go crazy.

You're already crazy if the above is truth.

The walk-ons, even "preferred", are not afforded the same benefits as scholarship players.

meals
weight room
film room
facilities
travel

there are a lot of disparities.

Not true exactly. A walk on pays, but has access to everything except free room and board, not that it is really free; the scholarship athlete definitely earns his scholarship. The weight room, film room, and all facilities are his, unless he is on some type of restriction, but just because a player is a walk on does not mean he is restricted. Playing time/travel is up to his effort and abilities. if he makes the travel squad, he travels. Get it?

The meals is a big one. Like I said, rule passed a couple of years ago allows all athletes access to the same food. Only major difference now is the scholarship itself, which now includes a stipend. Most other amenities are on par as far as I know.

I seriously doubt if anyone bats an eye if Bill Polian decides to spend 100k extra on his child's education.

... "on his child's education."

Passing up a scholarship at UCLA to pay for school at UT? I love UT dearly but that's like throwing away a gift certificate to Ruth Chris because you want to pay for your sirloin at Applebee's. Speaking about education only, of course. :)

Just to be clear, UT is not sirloin.

Jalen might like Applebee's better than Ruth Chris. And Reggie might want his son to dine where he wants.

In a sense it would be like Reggie making a large donation to the university. People give far more than $100,000 all the time. Do I think it will happen? No. But if I made millions of dollars a year I would at least consider paying for my son to go to school and play football at my alma mater. Would be a way of helping the team also.

Good article on Jalen:

Fully healthy and at 100%, Concord (Calif.) Clayton Valley offensive tackle Jalen McKenzie is gearing up for an important start to his senior season...

Having missed his entire junior year with a knee injury, the spring was crucial for Concord (Calif.) Clayton Valley offensive tackle Jalen McKenzie (6-5, 289).

And McKenzie made the most of the spring, doing well at The Opening Oakland and adding a few more offers to the mix, namely offers from Arizona State and UCLA.
Now McKenzie is prepared for an even more crucial beginning to his senior season, where four schools have said they'll be watching the start of the year closely.
"Some of the schools I want to visit, I'm waiting on for offers," said McKenzie. "Some schools said they want to see my first two games."
Michigan, USC, LSU and Tennessee have all told McKenzie that they want to watch the start of the season.
"Tennessee especially has said they just want to see film, any film. Game film, scrimmages, film period. They just want to see me in pads. The thing about California is that you can't be in pads until late before the season," said McKenzie.
UCLA and Arizona State both offered McKenzie in the spring and he said those two are recruiting him the hardest.
"UCLA of all the schools I've been offered by, is recruiting me the hardest," said McKenzie, who's mom went to UCLA. "Coach (Adrian) Klemm is the one recruiting me. I think I'm going to take an official visit there."
Arizona State has also been staying on him.
"Coach (Chris) Thomsen at Arizona State is also recruiting me pretty hard. They've been on me for a while," said McKenzie.
While McKenzie said he's likely to take an official visit to UCLA, he's hoping the offers come from the four schools staying in the most contact.
"I want to take official visits to Michigan, USC, Tennessee, LSU and UCLA," said McKenzie.
McKenzie showed in the spring that the rust was off and that he was healthy. Now he's ready to prove it in pads.
"I feel pretty confident with my knee," said McKenzie. "I feel I'm even way better than I was before. I'm bigger, faster and stronger. I was poised to have a good year last year. I put in a lot of work before I got hurt. I had something to prove. I still have something to prove."
McKenzie won't rush into a decision.
"Since I got hurt and I'm a little behind, I will probably take my official visits and decide on Signing Day," said McKenzie.
McKenzie said he's lost a little weight since the spring, but is in his target range.
"I'm 289 right now, and i want to play between 285-290," said McKenzie.
