'17 CA QB Jack Sears (Duke commit)

I think they just need to really concentrate on getting a QB for the 18 class. Not really a big concern this year. We have Dormady, Jones, and JG. If they get one this year, good...if not...oh well. More pressing needs than QB this year.

Sounds like a bad idea.

I would prefer to take a quarterback if one of the too guys on our board want in. I don't think we should take one just to take one though. What's the difference in taking a guy who really isn't on our board and a walk on?

A difference between a kid with college offers and a walk on? Make a bigger board.

I can't recall us taking a walk on with zero college offers. They just don't have offers from bigger programs. That's the kind of quarterback we'll take if we miss on too many more, so why waste the scholarship?

Most have a handful of FBS offers at best.

There is a significant difference between a few FBS and low level P5 offers.

Yeah, unless one transfers and one gets injured. Then it will be clear that we should have taken a QB that was at least serviceable.

We need to take a QB, even if it's taking a kid like a Paxton Lynch, a low ranked raw kid who has the measurables.

I agree that we shouldn't take a QB just for the sake of taking one in 2017. If none of the guys our coaches like jump on board, then no need to take a kid who doesn't project to have a future here anyway.

it would make us more attractive to Emory or Lawrence if there was no one ahead of them...

Rivals QB Challenge Finals...

"Recruiting wrap: Sears is aiming for a June commitment. He most recently visited Alabama, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.

Performance: Whereas some quarterbacks in attendance could benefit from being more focused on their mechanics, Sears looked too far in the other direction. The four-star passer was the most robotic of the 12 quarterbacks in attendance, with a deliberate and static arm motion. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Sears had one of the weaker arms at the event in terms of velocity, although his best throw on the day was the long toss into the net where he threw with proper trajectory and scored a pair of hits."

Ouch

I would rather not take a QB this class

I disagree. We need one for depth purposes if nothing else. After Dobbs graduates we will have only 3 scholarship QBs if we don't take one this year. There is a pretty decent that one QB transfers when the QB competition doesn't go his way. That would leave us with 2 scholarship QBs. Not a good situation.

Definitely need a QB in this class. Hopefully they can get a good one. Very possible there will only be 2 scholarship QB's on next year's roster if they don't.

Where do we look if Sears goes elsewhere? We've already missed on Johnson, Perry, and Hockman. Hooker and Ifedi both fit our system, but we haven't offered either. Who else might we look at?

That's the problem. It's a very weak QB class and we don't seem to be in on any of the upper tier guys. Is it worth offering a low end guy just to have a body? I guess in an emergency situation a guy like Jennings could always play there...?

Based on what's out there I'd say pass this year and go all in on Lawrence next year.

Just gonna throw this out there for the sake of argument. I'm not sure if I believe it 100% myself, but some have argued that it can be good to take a QB every now and then who is good, but not too good. That is, a guy who will be willing to stay on campus for 5 years who can be a worst-case-scenario-stopgap, especially when you've gathered 2-4 high caliber QBs and the odd men out may seek a transfer. If a kid like Sears, who has the talent to play, but maybe not the talent to beat out a Guarantano/Emory Jones/Trevor Lawrence is willing to join up and stick things out for 5 years, even as a backup, then he could be worth taking.

Heck, it's looking like that may be the role Sheriron plays at UT (though we were in a much different position when we recruited him, to be fair).
