'17 CA QB Jack Sears (Duke commit)

Have any of you watched Sears' hudl tape?? This guy is not just a middle of the road, placeholding 3rd stringer that you offer to have qb depth....he's legit.

I didn't mean to imply he's not a good QB. But if we land Lawrence or Jones, do you expect him to outplay either of those guys or Guarantano?

I totally agree with what you are saying and add that Sears is quite the "stopgap" QB if so. I'll allow this to happen.

Definitely understand where you're coming from but you're basing everything on expectations. Not saying all of them won't be great, but if watching college football for 24 years has taught me anything...it is that high school success doesn't always translate to college. I just think Sears seems to have all the tools needed to succeed...as does Guarantano and Lawrence/Jones seem to

Based on what's out there I'd say pass this year and go all in on Lawrence next year.

Honestly, if i have a $3m per year job riding on it, no way I'm going "all in" on a 17 year old making a decision in my favor. We may not have another option, but there is no upside to not taking a serviceable QB this year. Take someone as insurance if nothing else.

Folks on this message board were all over this kid until they read one negative review from one camp. Could have had a bad day, minor injury. Or maybe he isn't good. But I wouldn't write him off based on one article or one weekend.

I should have said all in on a 2018 QB not just Lawrence because we are also positioned well with Emory Jones.

Mid level 3* type QB this class is fine. He's going to be depth going forward anyway. Nothing more. TL or EJ likely bump him depth wise the day they sign. JMO

That's a good point. You never know what you've got for sure until you get them on campus. Sometimes kids have the natural talent, but lack the work ethic, time management skills, or maturity to put it all together as a CFB player. And sometimes the kid with a little less natural ability have those other qualitites in droves and thrive in CFB.

Lot of potential here--hope we are in mix

I agree. Just watched his film and wow I was impressed! Runs a 4.6 forty and can sling it. I wouldn't consider this kids an afterthought at all. QB isn't a top priority in this class but we need to consistently draw top talent here to compete with the other big dogs! Bottom line if he will seriously consider leaving the state then stay on him. If not, move along. But I think we need a QB every class. jmo

Recruiting wrap: Sears has options from coast-to-coast but it looks like a three-team race between Tennessee, UCLA and Washington at the moment. Sears recently visited the Vols and gave the school high praise following the trip.

Prediction: Tennessee. The Vols have honed in on Sears as their prime target and his willingness to visit bodes well. - Wommack

Interesting... sooo how accurate has Wommack been on his predictions?:crossfingers:

If Sears isn't the guy, some guy will blow up late. Or there will be a coaching change late in the process, and Tennessee will be a very attractive spot to land.

I have little concern at this point in the game.

Any thoughts on just not taking a QB in this class to basically lock us up for one of Lawrence or Jones for '18?

Or is it a foregone conclusion we are more than likely going to end up with one or the other either way?

Skipping a year of QB recruiting is almost never a good idea.

If we skip a QB this class, that could only leave us with 2 scholarship QB's in 2017 if one transfers. We could slide JJ over to provide some depth if needed? Just a thought

I'm not sure why JJ keeps being brought up in the conversation of QB depth. Jones said he wouldn't be switching him back and forth, that they'd give him a shot at QB and if he didn't prevail he'd be a WR or S. They will take a QB this class and JJ will stay at WR.

I think people are saying it as a last resort type situation. If all our quarterbacks go down, we at least have a guy who could step in.

But yeah, take a quarterback this class.
