'17 CA QB Jack Sears (Duke commit)

The argument against 40+ ppg averages and regular 350+ passing baffles me.

I don't think those are the limiting factors

You wear out your own defense and don't control the clock.

Sexy passing numbers are fun for fans but dont lead to wins like good ole ball control offense and physical defense.

Just look at how Denver won the superbowl.

That's certainly the logic that is used, but you could also say that you are wearing out your own offense. 11 guys on either side of the ball, pushing and running, so it goes both ways.

Pairing a prolific offense, no matter how it is run, with a solid defense is the best possible combination. Other things obviously work too

It never fails to amaze how quickly people are willing to assign causation where there is only correlation. If it weren't for Alabama (who we can agree is an outlier as far as talent/coaching), you would be talking about how great those gimmick passing games are. Serious question: how can you look at a team that gets more yards but loses the game and think that the reason they lost is that they got more yards? You are essentially saying that the style of offense has a higher correlation with game outcome that yards gained. I think I'll bet on the team with the most yards, thanks.

How many titles have Baylor, TCU, or Oregon won?

We're better off being a physical running team like Alabama than one of this gimmicky passing teams that never win anything.

Wrong wrong wrong. The reason they don't have titles is because of their DEFENSE. They have the best offenses and bad defenses.

But that is in part due to philosophy. That is what doomed Chip Kelly in Philly and will do the same in San Fran.

I'm ready to have a better passer at QB. And some dangerous baylor/tcu/Oregon type receivers

NO D4H I'M NOT BASHING DOBBS SO DON'T EVEN

Better passer doesn't equate to wins; see Bray. We have a balanced attack now, passing is a rhythm. Dobbs has to be allowed by the coaches to get into a rhythm.

We had a great offense and a bad defense. That was the problem not bray and the passing gane

You're saying you can't have a great pass attack and a great defense?

Fast scoring reduces time of possession, which tends to negatively effect defenses. They aren't mutually exclusive, but I would say there is some correlation.

SSVol said what I meant to say.

Its hard to have a great defense if you're out there all the time cause your offense runs 100 plays a game.

Ball control offense with a great running game is the best way to have a great defense.

Better passing can mean different things. If you have a good passing game and no running game, you can often gain more yards than the foe and lose. If you have a good running game and a poor passing game you can gain more yards than the foe and lose. If you have a good running game and a good passing game, you can gain a lot of total yards and a poor defense and still lose. The way you win football games is to have the best defense and good running and passing games and not turn the ball over. So what we are saying for 2016 is that we will have a very good defense, a very good running game and hopefully an improved passing game that keep the foe from stopping our running game.

Dobbs was not a good enough passer last year to really protect the running game. Good passer do not have to 'get in rhythm". They simply have to throw the ball where open receivers have a chance to catch the ball. If the receivers then drop the ball, you bring in another receiver. If the QB can not get the ball to the receiver, then you bring in a different QB. Seems pretty simple.

Great. First Cortez Mcdowell gets chunky, now we have a heavy quarterback recruit?

I would go with the team with the fewest turnovers and best special teams.

Definitely a correlation to Fast scoring and wearing down your defense due to lack of time on the bench resting. HOWEVER, what doomed that team was not only bad defense, but 0 depth. If you have depth, the guys who are still tired after a quick score can rest will the 2nd string fills in. WE HAD A CRAP DEFENSE, you think our backups were any better?

Bray was actually a good QB. We just couldn't hold a lead.

Also, I will take our "Gimmicky" offense any day of the week. 2000 plus rushing yards, put up points on EVERYONE, and we had a lead in EVERY game, our defense just collapse at the end.

We fix our defensive collapses, and have Dobbs have a little bit better touch on his throws, and we are looking at a possible 12-0 record this year. Doubt it will happen just cause ALOT will have to go our way, but I am hopeful!

I see this team going 11-1 or 10-2 (only because of that nasty 4 game stretch.):pepper:
