'17 CT QB CJ Lewis (Former TN commit 7/23/16)

Maybe this has been mentioned, but I didn't see it after scanning through 200 posts since late last night:

Anyone wonder why Butch was waiting until July 21st to officially offer him a spot in this class? Guess who visited unexpectedly that day...Emory J. I'm wondering if Butch got the final answer from him before telling CJ he had a spot in this class, meaning if Emory said he will be a Vol, then we give CJ an offer.

They're different classes, though. I don't see how one effects the other at all.

Very well could be. I do believe there was a camp this weekend as well and QBS were part of it. I think Lewis was there. The Jones visit seemed very short notice for EJ. Maybe tied together somehow or just a coincidence as the staff wanted to see Lewis in person once more on the 21st.

Thanks for clearing it up. I would think that a proven 4 or 5* QB would not be afraid of competition that a 3* would bring. If the 4 * thinks "he is the guy" then he should feel Lewis is not a threat to beat him out and thus irrelevant (almost the same as not signing a qb).

That's doesn't fit with what the kid said.

He said he was told July 21st was when he was getting a for sure answer by cbj for over a month.
An unexpected meeting from another kid wouldn't have been part of that plan all along

Maybe if he got bad news from Jones he would not have extended the offer? Maybe he told Jones "I've got to take a QB this class for depth purposes, if you're coming I've got somebody in mind, if you're not, I'm going to look for a higher rated guy." I mean look, you know Butch could have found a QB that would of looked better to the masses if he chose to.

The point is the op said this latest meeting with jones was unexpected. So therefore jones couldn't have known that July 21st was the time he was going to give the kid a final answer if that meeting mattered

That's why the op doesn't fit

Welcome aboard!

He'll have every opportunity to prove himself in practice and the locker room, and I'll reserve my judgment till then

:hi:

No. I don't think this pickup matters all that much to be honest. Not every pickup is a star in high school, that's just reality even for SEC teams. We have 3 highly recruited 4 star QB's on the roster ahead of him and the coaches are all in for an elite '18 QB.

The truth is this QB class is weak and we didn't land one of the few great ones so it's all about finding that diamond and developing him to be a contributor down the road in a few years and most likely just a good backup to the guys ahead of him and hopefully an elite '18 QB behind him.

Best case he develops into another Butch and Bob diamond or worst case he's a career backup or transfers in two years.

And he sounds like a good kid, hard worker, and really excited to be a Vol. So I say we welcome this young man with open arms and let him be the best Vol he can be. JMO.

Some aren't satisfied unless they are whining and crying.
Doesn't matter what happens.

Visit may have been unexpected but EJ may have told CBJ he'd give him a pretty good indication by that date.

This is exactly why I posted my OP. CJ is our #1 choice as long as our real #1 choice for the future after Guarantano is EJ. Although CJ and EJ are different classes, the offer to CJ hinges on EJ's decision. Butch has been selling to EJ that he's the future to continue the standard that we are hoping to start this season. By signing a depth QB this class, our pitch remains the same to EJ. Now, we are signing someone with potential but also someone with athleticism that he might be able to help somewhere else if things fall the way we hope with our current QB roster and then add EJ. And just because we didn't find out about EJs surprise visit on the 21st doesn't mean that it wasn't in the works for a while. Plus, we only really heard about CJ in the last week or so. IMHO, I think EJ is a Vol.

I would imagine this guy had to look solid for the staff to offer him. I would also imagine as coaches that they are pretty cocky and feel that Coach Jones and Debored feel like they can make a good QB out of anyone they recruit. IMO this coaching staff has done a great job with who they decide to take and who the decide to drop, so I'll roll with the coaches on this one.

The minute I saw this commit, I thought we must of gotten good news on EJ.

i just felt bad for the kid bc he commits to a school and gets blasted by the loud small percentage, embarrassing part of our fanbase. Its not a good look.

For one to believe the 2 QBs are connected is simply more of a slap in the face to this kid. You guys are acting like Because we are in good shape with an elite QB it's ok to take a kid that can't play. That kind of settling in recruiting sets up a huge decline

I dont think that's happening here at all

Who blasted him? He had all kinds of positive tweets. And I don't know the Sab guy, but he had a tweet saying that we had tons of guys camp and Lewis was the one they chose, and that he is a perfect fit for our offense. He just said that he will never be a starter. Do you disagree? Is that bashing the kid?

Boy, we better get rid half of our starting lineup then considering an big chunk of them were 3*s. Once again, you're clueless as usual.

Every class is going to have its fair share of 3*, but the majority of what this year's class is made up of is 3* so far... which was my point... reading comprehension was probably not your strongest part of school... I don't seem to see us winning the East, an SEC championship, or a Natty at this point, but this could be our year to finish games and win big.... oh, and my bad, I forgot JRM, Dobbs, Malone, Hurd, Kamara, Pwilly, Richmond, J Jones, Kirkland, TK jr, etc were 3*.....

Disagree. Taking another highly ranked QB affects both current QBs a new D future QBs negatively. I would have preferred we not take a QB this year but if Butch wanted a QB I this class I would prefer it to be a project type player. Not meaning to disrespect this kid but he is a developmental player.

Me too. If any of you on here were on twitter yesterday dogging this kid out, kindly hand in your Vol gear and go find another team. People like this are bottom feeders.

The July 21st thing was because we had some more QBs coming in to camp to evaluate. They still liked Lewis better after seeing them. Obviously kid is talented this staff evaluated a lot of QBs at camps this spring and summer and after missing in Hunter/Sears/Perry this kid has always been target #1 of leftovers if you listened to VQ or 247. So technically he was #4 overall on serious target list but staff has known for awhile they weren't getting the other 3 so he has been their top target since for 2017 class. It's really not hard to watch his film and realize it's not a wasted scholarship like the guys that only pull his stars up then don't bother to watch him.

Is it exciting? No but guess what doesn't have to be exciting now to become a contributor down the road. We got several guys that are key contributors whether it's in games, locker room, scout team etc. a lot goes into a football team. You can be a key contributor without being the next Heisman winner
