'17 CT QB CJ Lewis (Former TN commit 7/23/16)

There's a reason Butch and his staff are getting paid to do their job and not us. We can have an opinion on here but there's a difference between stating your opinion and constantly whining about the certain decisions Butch has made. Whether it's recruiting or football related, someone always has an negative smart remark. Butch is not stupid and he has ounces of pressure on his shoulders to meet fan expectations this season which I think he'll meet. If they think they know so much about being an head coach for the University of Tennessee, then why aren't they the ones with the headset on? That's what I can't seem to figure out. To act like Butch doesn't know how to do his job according to some "fans" on here, is just straight up comical.

You could've saved time by simply saying that anyone that has a different opinion from yours is wrong

I was absolutely appalled when I saw some people talking negatively about this kid on twitter. I get that people have different opinions, but you have to be the lowest form of soap scum on the earth to use social media as a platform to try and show off your less-than stellar "couch coaching."

Yeah, you can have your own opinion and you can think what you want, but to sit here and talk bad about a kid who has worked his ass off for an offer is as fair-weather fan as it gets. I have been slightly disappointed with the current outlook of our 2017 class, but it's early and can get better. I would never try and dog a kid though just because his star rating isn't as high as another.

This guy will shoot up the rankings with a good senior year now that the spotlight is on him. I feel good about our future at QB.

I completely agree and think he will be a 4* by the time his season is over. NSD is a long way off and to worry about it now is crazy.

Butch and company is doing a hell of a job on and off the field. We finish 11-1 that commitment list you see now will be totally different names come February.

SWiltfong247: New #Tennessee QB commit CJ Lewis has 4.5 speed and throws a damn good deep ball: 247Sports Take: New Tennessee QB commit has all the tools @RyanCallahan247 @wesrucker247
Know I said it earlier in the thread, but I really think this kid might turn into a killer wideout with his size and speed...also QB's who convert to WR tend to have a good understanding of the timing and coverages that many hs WR's don't

Common sense ain't common bere. He's a QB with speed. Have you seen his film? Nice touch also. He has tools you can't coach, plus great upside. If he wasn't gonna be in the QB role, I doubt he would have committed so eary.

“I wasn’t as consistent as I should be. (Coach DeBord) told me straight up that as of right now I wouldn’t be able to have an offer because I wasn’t consistent enough.”

Lewis appreciated DeBord’s honesty, yet the truth still stung. DeBord remained intrigued by the quarterback’s athleticism, though, and invited Lewis to attend Tennessee’s quarterback camp in June for further evaluation. Lewis jumped at the opportunity.

The nation’s 38th ranked duel-threat quarterback relished a second chance, winning MVP honors and leapfrogging a number of other signal-callers on UT’s big board.

“I guess I balled out,” Lewis said.

“I ran a good 40. I threw the ball consistently and won the most accurate arm award. Couple weeks later, I talked with Coach Jones and he told me straight up that I was No. 1 on their board, but that they’d promised two recruits that they would give them a shot on July 21.”

The more I read about this kid the more I like. His film is good, but with most QB's they are hit and miss.It sounds like he's ready to put the work in to be great.

People can bash me if they want, but his film looks a lot better than HJs. This kid can play. He doesn't look panic stricken when pressure comes. Sure he doesn't have a strong arm, but he has really nice touch, which is more important imo. Andy Kelly won a lot of ballgames for us with his less than stellar arm.

Danny Weurfel comes to mind when discussing QBs with less than stellar arm strength. He turned out to be pretty good.

Kid has nice touch. Throws very 'catchable' balls.. Almost like they're thrown underhanded.. Soft and easy to catch..

Did that make any sense at all?

So what does this mean from his quote:

"I talked with Coach Jones and he told me straight up that I was No. 1 on their board, but that they’d promised two recruits that they would give them a shot on July 21"

It means CJ is the best prospect Butch wanted to take this year. I'd rather have him than HJ. Fits our offense better, throws a good deep ball, and has a high ceiling

Maybe felt they shouldn't take the commitment until they saw the other two as promised. Probably more for the other 2 than CJ.

The other 2 may have known Butch only wanted 1 QB this cycle.

So, we didn't want Hunter anyways?

I took it as we had told a couple of other prospects we would look at them when they camped and see how they showed out. Apparently we looked at them and CJ looked better.

Do you see it differently?

Yep that's how I'd interpret it as well

It all just means Butch is deflecting because when they saw the improvement from CJ, along with his deep desire to be a Vol they knew it was time to force the hand of the other two 'maybes'. In the end they secured a commitment from the QB that possesses the skill set they want, which should make every Vol fan happy that trusts the coaching staff.

Which they should trust the coaching staff that turned the program around.
