'17 FL TE James Brown (UT signee)

It seems as though alot of these signees sign and then get lost in the program with no meaningful production. Dillon Bates is a prime example. He was hyped up out of HS; the kid has practically fallen off the map. Stephen Griffin, another one. McKenzie.. another one. Where is the development with these players?

Seems you have not been keeping up with what is happening. Bates has been hurt almost his entire stay, Griffen was hurt but played last week and caused a huge fumble to stop a drive at the 4 yard line and Mckenzie was ur of football his senior year of high school and reported in poor condition which resulted in a red shirt year in 2015. This year h was making much better progress until he was injured and is out for the rest of the season.

I think Bates redshirted a year. Not sure Mac did. Isn't he a sophomore?

Edit. He played last year as did Shy. Was bad out of shape though.

Since when are projects busts? We took this kid in a class of 33 recruits and 4-5 LBs (6 if you count Jumper) as a guy who was a bit of a longshot with potentially high upside.

If we're going back and looking at that 2014 class, there are a number of guys we can call busts, but Jakob ain't one of em.

He's called a bust because This board believed the reports that Thig said he was the best LB recruit in the entire country.

None of the three have lived up to their billing. At least not thus far. Again... the development factor remains in question with this coaching staff.

3* recruit coming in & not even close so Thig told a big one there or maybe he was trying to hype Jakob up to be the best LB in the country. You see where that's got him? Probably gotten him a transfer ticket out of K-Town it looks like.

Again, I agree with you. It seems hardly any player progress. Either they stay about the same kind of player or some even regress. I don't get it! :dunno:

I feel the same way. When I look at elite programs, it seems as though their better players fall in line seamlessly, which is not only a testament to their ability, but also their coaching staff. Perhaps Butch Jones's player evaluation should be questioned. On paper, Tennessee looks to have alot of talent, but in reality, those same players seem to be stuck in the mud. At some point they have to make the transition from "true freshman" to dependable game-impact type players. I haven't seen enough of that with this coaching staff.

Agree totally with your post again. Very well posted. :good!:

Talking about Jakob reminded me of that poster who had a man crush on him. What was his name? It was hilarious.

"Thursday, Larry Scott and Robert Gillespie will be in Orlando to see commitment James Brown. We think the Vol duo coaches may have seen running back Darien Felix on Wednesday. Jacquez Jones will also receive a visit Thursday."

Where do we stand between Felix & Etienne if you know Ron? I would much rather have Etienne but it seems the coaching staff is higher on Felix.

I like Felix myself. He could grow into something like Kamara imo. RG does do a good job with out RB'S. Hope we hang on to him.

Isn't it insane that we long for the days of Mychal Rivera .

Rivers was good so not really. wolf has more NFL upside than Rivera. We just don't use TE enough which is odd considering he used them a lot before TN. I expect a heavy dose of TE usage next year with Scott calling plays

So basically you're saying it is crazy that we long for the days of Rivera LOL

Rivera has had a fairly solid NFL career. Not sure Wolf will have a better one, although Wolf is more of what you look for in an NFL TE body wise.

Wonder how soon before he can contribute. I think he's going to be a good player at TE. Big and fast

We will have Ethan Wolf, Jakob Johnson, and Austin Pope as the scholarship TEs in spring ball. Ethan is the only proven pass catching TE that we have. Pope will need to step up and Brown will have an opportunity if he shows out in fall camp.

We also have Eli Wolf but he got limited action this past year. There is always a chance that he could progress this year. All is all the TE competition is WIDE open.
