'17 FL TE James Brown (UT signee)

And has been MIA at TE

Caught a pass. Played ST. Thought he might have been an option if they had used the offset I, as is the expanded use of H-backs against Kentucky may hint at some opportunity and Croom's gone next season. If not, he's among a "select few" who never played much at Tennessee...yet still persevered and lead productive civilian lives. :)

I'm pretty sure if you don't produce for your college football team they euthanize you upon the completion of your eligibility. My sources told me that made up fact.

Have we ever actually witnessed one of these NONPRODUCERS in a non-controlled environment? :pilot: Just because the government salts away your sources in institutions doesn't make their info less valid.

Jakob Johnson was very much a huge project from the beginning and he just hasn't made the transition to big-time D1 college football from European HS ball. In hindsight, it was always a long shot that he'd become the star Tommy Thigpen would've had us believe he was destined to become.

Thig: best LB in the entire class.

Good ole Thig

He's been great on kickoff and kickoff return teams for us. He forced the fumble that John Kelly recovered against UGA last year IIRC.

Would have liked to see him make a bigger impact on offense or defense by this point, but STs are important too. Hopefully he finds a way to contribute before he graduates, even if it's just as a situational blocker at TE on offense. Dude has the size to be a good blocker for us in theory at least.

^Pretty much this. No team is 100% star quality. Seasons are made by the guys doing the other vital tasks that fans take for granted...until they fail. Wish I had the talent to be a "failure" like Jakob. If he stays and graduates, he never has to buy a drink in Knoxville again.

Yep. IMO if a guy spends 3-4 years as a major contributor on special teams and does his job well, he can't be considered a failure. Gotta have those guys on the roster too.

Of course, you can't have too many 4* guys turn out like that without it being a disappointment though. But Jakob was going to be a project and everybody knew that when we signed him.

Jakob is not playing the position he can play the best. It was obvious in fall camp. Scott skewered him a few times. One time he didn't even understand he was supposed to go in for a play, realized it too late, ran out on the field anyway. Butch stopped the scrimmage, Scott yelled at him to get out off the field, and sent Eli Wolf in as a replacement. Stuff like that happens, but he is not a newbie. Not the way to gain the coaches confidence and playing time. ST and scout team appears to be his ceiling so far IMO. I would have left him on D at DE.

You left out the "my apologies to all". Sorry, man owned what he wrought. :good!:

I agree. I'd love to be wrong but I think it's pretty obvious he is just a bust. I don't know if he's changed his habits but the rumors the first couple of years were he enjoyed partying a lot more than dedicating himself to football. Who knows. But I expect he was just another miss at LB.

Happens to alot of guys

"The life" is much more appealing than "the Grind"

Pledging a frat doesn't help either.

In case you didn't know rumors are that a TE is leaving after the season. My guess & most others think it's gonna be Jakob Johnson. No way it's either one of the Wolf brothers so it has to be Johnson. It just hasn't worked out for him moving him to TE.

I don't even think he has a catch since being moved to TE. I know he had a drop against Tenn. Tech but no catches I don't believe. He's barely seen the field so that's why I say he's the TE that's gone. Thanks!

Kinda in the middle? Lol...nowhere near the middle....more like a bust.

Since when are projects busts? We took this kid in a class of 33 recruits and 4-5 LBs (6 if you count Jumper) as a guy who was a bit of a longshot with potentially high upside.

If we're going back and looking at that 2014 class, there are a number of guys we can call busts, but Jakob ain't one of em.

Kinda at the bottom

He was new to the game and was a project from the get go. Easy to root for but far from being expected to be a productive player.

Pretty much this.

He's still got a year to make some sort of impact. I doubt it will be as anything more than a role player, but who knows.

It seems as though alot of these signees sign and then get lost in the program with no meaningful production. Dillon Bates is a prime example. He was hyped up out of HS; the kid has practically fallen off the map. Stephen Griffin, another one. McKenzie.. another one. Where is the development with these players?
