'17 GA CB/S Shawn Shamburger (UT signee)

While Shawn Shamburger told everyone he shut his recruitment down last weekend, things could potentially get interesting over the next few days. We believe Tennessee has nothing to worry about, but in talking to some of our media brethren in Alabama, the Tide may take a late swing at him early next week if things don't go there way with a few defensive backs still on their board. Shamburger is an Alabama native so an offer from the Tide could make this one interesting if that happens.

Yep. This is the time of year that is actually the most fun to watch in recruiting. The rest of the year is just a build up to this last week.

God I love recruiting!!

I find it interesting that committed recruits to 3 star U are getting late pushes from some high profile schools. Bama may look at Shamburger, ND is trying to get Bailey there, Ole Miss is trying to get Murphy, etc. Our staff continues to show that they can evaluate talent.

Phillips who moved to DT last year? Not sure why he wouldn’t be a good fit for a 3-4 defense. He’s physical, athletic and big enough now weighing 275-280 that he bulked up to last year to play DT.

Out LB’s wasn’t the complete problem with our Defense, imo the problem started losing our top 3 interior lineman. With players like Smith and Sapp coming back off of inquiries add them with our vets like McDowell, Kirkland, Berry, Bates and Jumper that’s a very solid and deep group. Not to mention are young players like Taylor, Bituli, Blakely and McDaniel who can all play OLB for depth.

DE: Phillips 275, Vickers 295 Mixon 270
DT: McKenzie 325, Alexis Johnson 295, Mosley 340, Pual Bain 300 who I know everyone likes to joke about but played good in his limited actions
DE: Kongbo 280, Tuttle 311 when fully heathy starting, Picou 277

IMO very solid depth with not even including this year recruiting class

We dont have enough LB depth or talent for a 3-4

We aren't going to have the depth at LB to play a 3-4 in 2017?

LB1 Darrin Kirkland Jr.
LB2 Cortez McDowell
LB3 Colton Jumper
LB4 Gavin Bryant
LB5 Dillon Bates
LB6 Daniel Bituli
LB7 Quart'e Sapp
LB8 Elliott Berry
LB9 Will Ignont (freshman)
LB10 Ja'Quain Blakely
LB11 Shanon Reid (freshman)
LB12 Solon Page III (freshman)
LB13
ATH/DE Marquez Bembry (freshman)
LB14
T.J. Minnifee (freshman)
LB15
Matt Ballard
LB16
DaJour Maddox
LB17
Landon Knoll

That's 13 possibly 14 deep right there. The last few are walk-ons. I would have to disagree with you personally but we all have our own opinions. We definitely have more depth now & don't lose a lot down to number 13 on the depth chart. Thanks!

He needs to just play more aggressive. IMO But he was also injured early on.

Question for you.... I think I heard your a DB coach... And if so what do you look for when teaching DB's coverage skills... Like their footwork what do you look for in footwork arm fighting do you prefer slide/shuffle technique or are you a back pedal guy point head over your knees and drive down to the WR... Just wanna get into your mind. A Little bit.

Depends on the kids skill set. I look for speed and hips more than anything out of CBs. Plus willingness to tackle. Then I want to see how they play the deep ball. The technical skills can all be taught and a good DB coach should be able to coach technique up.

Footwork wise: I teach the same things but based on a kids skill set(length, hand speed, strength and foot speed) they may play it different to provide the same leverage in coverage across the board on certain WRs. Also your technique should change based on the WR you are facing at the time. Where scouting comes into play and what you are trying to keep a certain WR from doing.

Any combination of 4 off that list on D at the same time and we're in trouble.

I'll be happy to field a good 3 with Thigpen coaching them up. 😎😎😎😎😎

Yeah, if we add a 10th assistant with the NCAA rule change, we need to get a linebacker coach that can coach the position up. Let Thig recruit.

On tape what is your perfect CB? Skill technique length speed twich( do you worry about that much) foot speed... What do you teach when he gets beat and is out of postion... What is the recovery process... I teach to push to his inside should and play ball if at all possible but if they are not quick enough to recover then play through the WR... Use the rake tech... Which means to me uppercut with you outside hand and if ability is there shift your hips towards the receiver and bat down on the ball.... Then I start working on fighting the ball out to switch postion which includes more of a strip mentality as opposed to just batting the ball... Takes a lot more skill but if successful can be a beautiful thing to watch...
