'17 GA CB/S Shawn Shamburger (UT signee)

Yeah, I do not think that is it :)

"According to the article on 247, the kid is 19. Originally from Alabama, he had to move to Georgia so he could play football his senior year. Played at Theodore High School in Alabama."

Maybe I misinterpreted that quote. Reading it, it made it sound like he had to move states in order to be eligible and explicitly notes that he is 19 years old. Like I said though, I may have read too much into it.

I don't even have to read that article to tell you about Propst.

I was on a team we lost to his team 21-17(had 18 penalties versus them, yes they cheated the HELL out of us). After the game he talked to all of us he liked and told us he wanted us at Hoover at the time. And I know even more stuff to tell the truth. He was WILDIN at Hoover. I mean he was wide open. But he can coach football and that's no doubt about it.

Anybody that spent any time in Alabama following football during his years has heard stories. :)

I can't wait to hear this after he gets a pick...The Shamburglar steals another one! That would be a great chuckle.

It was a joke... You know being too old to still be in high school in the state of Alabama. :)

No misinterpretation. It's a free article on 247. Said he had to play in Georgia because he was 19. Couldn't play in Alabama.

Don't know if that's a real rule, just what the article said.

I dont really think that much. I am not qualified. Thats why I trust the people who get paid to make these evaluations.

But I am sure after you give your analysis and it is positive, people who believe in you will just eat this guy up and think he is a great addition. All while Alabama and other programs pull in the big time, highly rated guys. But here's to hanging on to that "but Sutton was only a 3*" branch. Because we all know, recruiting rankings mean nothing.

Does that mean that you trust our coaching staff? They get paid a whole lot more than the staff that comes up with the rating for each player for the recruiting services.

You mean, like Butch Jones, Bob Shoop, and Bob Welton?

What did coaches do in the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's before they had all these cool star rating services. Did they go watch them workout and play the actual games? Did they evaluate their film. No way in the world they could do that now. Bet they can't wait to see on the Twitter when these pubs twitter out the day they will post the player ratings. Then they get real busy preparing to read those books so they can call some kids. The General and Bear don't know how lucky these new coaches are to have people do their work and rate the players for them.

:crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy::crazy:

“People, all the coaches told me Tennessee was ‘a great place to be.’ When I went up there on my visit, it was kind of overwhelming when you step inside the stadium and see 80,000 people on homecoming game where nobody really ever shows up. It was amazing,” he said.

“When I first stepped into the practice facility and the indoor field, it was amazing. They have everything linked together. It goes from the practice facility to the weight room to the dining hall. Everything is in one (place), and then they’re talking about adding on an apartment complex right next to it, right next to the academic center. So, everything is centered around each other, so it’s great for athletes.”

“I’m a ballhawk and love being in an area where I can make a play,” Shamburger said.

“That’s my deal. I love making plays on the ball. That’s what I do.”

He hopes to return to Knoxville for the Missouri game on Nov. 19.

“It’s been a crazy experience,” Shamburger said.

“I didn’t grow up a Tennessee fan. But they were interested. It’s an SEC school. It’s the right school.”

Don't bother guys. Most people cannot possibly look past a player's star rating.

I wish Tony would have trolled, left everything accurate, but given him 5 stars. Place would have gone nuts

The problem there is that so many use Jones' recruiting ranking to prove he's been a great recruiter.... then UT gets blown out by Bama and embarrassed by an undermanned USCe team.

So if stars don't matter.... they don't matter when Jones gets them. If they do matter... then they matter when he doesn't get them.

People just need to be consistent.

Since you apparently have to be a sunshine pumper to believe in this kid, I'll share some perspective from this VFL that believes in the evaluations of our coaching staff.

Most people only consider the 3 major recruiting services when evaluating the worthiness of a prospect. I consider our coaching staff to be a recruiting service, a 4th major service, if you will.

When ESPN reports a sports-related item, I don't wait for Fox Sports and/or CBS to confirm it. I understand that ESPN is the industry leader, and I understand that they hit the mark first way more often than not. Likewise, I consider our coaching staff to be the industry leader, and I don't wait for Rivals or 247 to confirm the validity of a prospect. Our coaches have a job and a lifestyle on the line. Rivals and 247 want your $9.99.

The Cam Sutton's of the world aren't nearly as rare as some of you guys make them out to be. Once again, I point to Eddie Jackson. We were first on the scene to that unranked/2-star DB, and our fans loathed the offer. 3-4 years later, we offer Shawn Shamburger, and our fans once again loathe the offer. This time, I'm reading that we'll never compete with Bama's Eddie Jackson types by recruiting 2-stars, the ultimate irony.

Let's also not forget that Rivals, 247, and ESPN base a lot of their ratings on offer lists, the obvious indicator of who the real "recruiting service" is truly.

I don't care to argue any of this. If you don't agree, that's fine, I respect that. But us "glass half-full" folks can be realists, too. That's not reserved for the "glass half-empty" posters.

This kid may walk on water.... but offering Cam Sutton is a stretch. Which other 3* has the staff picked up who has worked out? CB is a MAJOR weakness right now being manned by other 3* that we convinced ourselves in previous years were "underrated".

Kelly plays CB?

But to your point, you are STILL using the exceptions in an attempt to establish a rule. If Jones was outclassing the rest of the SEC in player development then maybe we shouldn't worry about recruit ratings. And for that matter, some of the 3* players in this class will likely become great. Most of them however will not. BUT.... Jones has NOT been close to the top in the SEC in player development. Some position groups have gone backwards. It took Jones 3 years to figure out that he wasn't getting SEC development in the S&C program and may have actually made the change because of conduct issues rather than performance. We're in year 4 and we can't be sure he's seen the lack of improvement in OL play even now.

It is tough to win with 3* when others are loading up on blue chip players. It is impossible when you can't outcoach or out-develop other coaches. There is no indication Jones can do either.

I think that sjt's point is that while Cam and John may very well be better than their star ranking says, How can you compete with the Alabama's, Ohio St's of the world when they have soooooooo many higher ranked players.

I guarantee you that a team full of 5 stars will have more difference makers than a team full of 3 stars with the occasional Cam Sutton type player.
