'17 GA CB Yusuf Corker

Elsewhere in the secondary, look for Yusef Corker to visit in January. Even though he just committed to Kentucky on Monday, he made it clear he was more locking in a spot over ending his recruitment. Tennessee has won the mom in this battle, but the dad is looking out for his nephew as Corker and his cousin would love to play together in college. The other defensive back that appears to be on radar is Ameer Speed. Speed is scheduled to visit the Vols the last weekend of January, but Tennessee is chasing Virginia Tech in that battle.

Maybe this factored in to why he didn't pick us. It's clear that Martinez isn't coming back.

I am not sure that is true. We will have to wait and see what happens. Speculation on these decisions is always a shot in the dark and do nothing but cast negative vibes on recruiting.

If we beat Vandy and Scar like we should have, we are 10-2, top 10 team, hyped up, and on our way to a top 5 class right now imo.

Don't agree, there are things working against this staff in the state of TN that would never happen in AL, GA, or LA. But some of that is of their own doing.

Bottom line is TN has some questionable assistants in terms of recruiting ability AND player development. It won't get better until changes are made in some areas, and whether Butch is part of the solution or part of the problem remains to be seen.

EDIT: This is straight from the mouth of a support person that has been with the AD for years.

I think the late-season collapse did have some impact on this class. However, I also agree that recruiting and development upgrades are sorely needed in a few areas. Honestly, outside of Gillespie, and possibly Scott (as he's only been here one season), I think every assistant position could use an upgrade, especially from the coaching standpoint.

Our class was mediocre even when we were top 15. Winning out couldn't hurt, but the bottom line is that the correlation between recruiting and winning isn't as high as you'd think.

this is so sad.

"theres no one out there"

It really seems that very few top talent guys are seriously considering us this year and even some of our top commitments are considering flipping. The narrative around TN right now is severely hurting our recruiting this year

It didn't seem like that. Even before the season when we were all expecting big things, both Johnson and Higgins flipped to Clemson and we had taken the bulk of the 3 stars

If you can show me 5 posts that said this season was acceptable and not disappointing and that Butch doesn't need to make any changes I will concede your argument.

Just saw your post, all these days later. First, you moved the goalposts. I said plenty of posters are happy with 8 to 9 wins no matter how they came about and are good with Butch going forward. You threw in the "doesn't need to make staff changes" bit, but that's beside the point I was making. Here are a few posts I've found perusing the board for 15-20 minutes.....all seem to either be quite happy with Butch and how the season went or are very defensive of the head coach from criticism......

1. Congratulations to Butch and the staff. Great effort tonight and it is good to get a program win over The Huskers.

It was a crazy season. Maybe that was 3 to 5 years worth of defensive injuries in one season and we will not see something like that again. Likely never will see another star player meltdown in mid-season.

Dobbs and Barnett are 2 all time greats and many seniors on Team 120 left it all on the field. There is much to be proud of from this squad.

Glad to have the staff we have and their hard work to rebuild the mighty Vols. 3-0 in bowl wins is special.

2. You are talking about South Carolina, the team that just took USF to overtime before losing and Vanderbilt that also beat Georgia and Ole Miss before its bowl game debacle with powerful NC St.

Why would we want to change any coaches. Injuries to most of our top defensive players and some OL caused those loses. Not the coaches.

Our current coaches are great recruiters. Let them do their job which right now is to beat Nebraska.

3. If CBJ wins 9 games next year he will still be the coach at UT. For the 20th time at least THE LAST THING THIS ADMINISTRATION WANTS TO DO IS BUYOUT A COACHING STAFF AND SEARCH FOR A NEW ONE. I know it's fun (for some) to fantasize about a coaching search/new head coach but that's a major deal and things MUST get a lot worst before we see that happen. Just trying to prevent major depression for a few folks. Carry on with said thread however..,,

6. Aside from the incoming overhaul of the S&C program, I don't see any staff changes happening (unless DeBord retires). It would be awesome if Butch gave Shoop the keys and said, "go get your guys."

7. By all accounts, Butch still has the team on board. This season was rough... really rough. But, I think injuries were beyond the norm this year. Basically, we've been starting 3rd stringers at DT (which was already our weakest link), our LBs are 2nd string or injured, and the O Line has been a walking trauma unit.

Nobody wants to hear excuses. I'm with you. Losing to Vandy is horrific. BUT, I hope cooler heads will reign. Butch and his staff need our support, not infighting and second guessing.

Look at LONG TERM successful programs... their fanbases understand ups and downs, and their coaching staffs are steady (Pittsburg Steelers now on 3rd Head Coach... in the past 47 years).

The generation of immediate gratification needs to take a seat and shut the f up.

True Vol fans get this.

8. As a UT grad and diehard fan of 30 years, I've seen our ups and downs. I also have enough wisdom to know how the program works (the DC and OC make play calls, kiddo).

4 years ago, Butch Jones was our THIRD pick that we approached to become our HC. Gundy and Strong (recently fired by the other UT btw) said no thanks to us.

You should be kissing Butch's Lilly white a$$ for coming here and putting up with the moronic blather that folks like you spew on Volnation, junior.

10. I look forward to a team 121 with a lot of talent and Coach Jones and staff with another year of experience at Tennessee behind them like wind at their back to take advantage of the painful lessons learned from the disappointing parts of the season and put together more winning football in 2017.

In light of all the things that went haywire this season, (injuries, williams, hurd, etc.) it really could have been much worse.

11. This site just fascinates me. Some of the most stupid remarks for a coach that has done a bang up job recruiting and turning a program around that definitely SUCKED for several years. do yall not understand that due to so many injuries that we are playing a makeshift defensive unit that is doing their best. Everyone talks about Tennessee having great fans. I totally disagree. I am 69 years old and have been watching Tennessee football since I was about 14 years old. I personally think Tennessee fans (lots but not the majority) are so unreasonable and so unrealistic about almost every aspect of football. The way I look at it if you do not like what you see then look and support another team. Let Butch Jones alone and give him time to take a team out of the gloom and dooms of college football. Remember Rome wasn't built in a year. Give the man a chance. Yes, I too believe Vandy will probably beat us next week due to all our best players , especially on defense, walking around in boots, arm casts, shoulder slinge etc !!!! So get a life !!!!!

To be fair, there are indeed a lot of folks who want to see staff chsnges, no doubt it's the majority. Looks like both of us want them. But to also be clear, bottom line is, you said "-nobody thinks last year was acceptable, nobody-"...... these posts I found in about 15-20 minutes say otherwise.

I hate reading posts from the Legion of the Miserable, but wonder if the mopes who write them would be kicking their dogs or beating their wives and children, if they were not here complaining and screaming. Maybe its a good thing for them to come here.
