'17 IL WR Jeff Thomas

Top-50 senior wide receiver Jeff Thomas of East St. Louis (Ill.) High School is scheduled to take an official visit to Tennessee the weekend of Jan. 27, East St. Louis coach Darren Sunkett told GoVols247 on Monday.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Thomas, who was named one of the most valuable player of the Under Armour All-America Game on Jan. 1, also is planning to go on official visits to Louisville this weekend and Miami the weekend of Jan. 20 before traveling to Tennessee the final weekend before National Signing Day, Sunkett said.

“Those are set, confirmed,” Sunkett said.

“He’s narrowed it down,” Sunkett said, “so it’s definitely those four schools.”

While Thomas still is learning more about Tennessee’s program and has yet to visit the Vols, Sunkett said Thomas likes what he has heard about them.

“They’re getting better year to year,” Sunkett said. “The kid just wants to play for a winner, and he feels like Tennessee has got a chance to win during his time span there. … It’s just all about playing for a contender. The kid, he’s been in a winning program his whole life, and he wants to go somewhere where he can possibly contend for a national championship.”

“I’m sure that’s appealing to him — their need for an explosive offensive ballplayer,” Sunkett said. “And that’s what he brings to the table. That’s pretty much what intrigued Jeff, that he’d have the opportunity to play right away.”

If Welker gets hired here you have to like our chances even more. Even without Welker, we just gotta get him to campus and we have a legit shot.

Sorry, catching up. Is Welker seriously being talked about as a candidate for WR coach? Or is it just wishful thinking on the part of VN?

No it's serious. But probably more of a QC position than a full time WR coach

Still probably leaning more towards wishful thinking as there are rumors WVU is going to offer him a full time staffing position. I think best we can offer is a QC or GA role. He is interviewing today so the talk about it being a possibility is definitely real though.

Read somewhere that it was believed that changes were forthcoming with the coaching staff, but wouldn't be made until after NSD. That included the possibility that CZA would be moving on...and its rumored he is looking around. If that is the case, then bringing Walker on board now in a QC position would likely lead to him being named the WR coach if indeed CZA were to depart. JMO.

That guy will never take a meaningful snap at Tennessee.

Guarantano is the starter from day one.

Coming from that above average layman who thought Dobbs would win the Heisman and UT would go undefeated.

I have no idea who will become the starter and especially because we have had ZERO insights into the competition. But Dormady is a talented guy who knows the system. In brief glimpses, he has delivered the ball more accurately than Dobbs.

If Jones can't figure the OL out and UT needs a guy that will be running for his life... then maybe JG or even SJ is the answer. If the Vols have a good enough OL to succeed with a more pure QB then QD may very well be the best option.
