'17 IN QB Hunter Johnson (Former UT Commit 8/23/15) (Clemson commit)

Just gotta remember that the ball bounces funny for you sometimes and against you sometimes. It's like racing... if you are in it near the end, you have a shot. I think the key is to be in that position. Remember all the breaks we got late in the 98 NC season with 2-3 undefeated teams losing ahead of us in the last two weeks (IIRC)? Let's just be in the mix and we will get our share.

We became number one in week 10 so the last 3 weeks before the sec title game

Another frequent visitor that's expected back in Knoxville this weekend is 2017 quarterback Hunter Johnson. Johnson has seen the Vols several times since last fall and there's a sense Tennessee may be the early team to beat for the Rivals100 quarterback.

If this kid commits to Tennessee I'm taking partial credit.

I was in Brownsburg last fall during the georgia and Vandy games. Watched them at Scotty's Brewhouse decked out in UT gear. And trust me, I'm not quiet during tennessee games.

But he's in Avon! Who did you recruit?

Per 247:
“It was great,” Johnson said. “It was really good.”

The 6-foot-3, 197-pound Johnson and his family arrived on Friday evening and departed Saturday night.

“We got to spend some time with Coach DeBord and Coach Jones and Coach Sheridan,” Johnson said. “It was nice to spend some one-on-one time with them and we got some time with them as well today.

“It was a great visit overall.”

As Tennessee competes with the likes of Miami, Michigan, North Carolina, N.C. State, Northwestern, Notre Dame and Penn State for Johnson’s signature, there isn’t much left for him to learn about the Vols program.

“This was actually the first time my dad got to meet Coach DeBord,” Johnson said. “I wanted my whole family to meet Coach DeBord and talk with the coaches so we can talk as a family about where we feel comfortable. We took a lot from the weekend and had a great weekend.

“I think we’re planning on coming back in the summer so I can work with Coach DeBord at a camp maybe or just come by and hang out. I have a strong relationship with them right now and I’m working on continuing to build that. I feel confident with where Tennessee is going right now.”

Love that he brought the family with him to meet with the coaches. I know it's early but I really think this kid is a program changer.

Brings his dad to give the okay. Now he will wait and see how we do over the next few years. This kid is a great football player.

New Video up on Rivals. Him talking about his recruitment after winning the QB MVP award at the Rivals Five Star Challenge in St. Louis. Anyone care to summarize?

Class of 2017 Rivals100 quarterback Hunter Johnson came into Sunday's camp with a reputation as one of the nation's best at his position and he did nothing to hurt his reputation with his showing. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound prospect showed off his cannon arm and looked terrific during both drills and one-on-ones. While he still has some work to do in terms of reining it in and adding touch when needed, Johnson clearly has the tools to be a special prospect in the future. His performance showed why schools such as Notre Dame and Tennessee are lining up to get him in the fold, and as the spring evaluation period rolls on it wouldn't be a surprise to see several other major programs try to get in the mix. As far as his ranking on the pecking order of 2017 quarterbacks, he will have a chance to prove he belongs at or near the top at the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge Presented By Under Armour next month after earning a berth Sunday. - See more at: https://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1763051#sthash.tx3IbqhJ.dpuf

This. We were ranked #1 going into the SECC game that year. KSU and UCLA losing their last games of the season helped FSU get into the NC game, but UT was in as long as they didn't lose to MSU in Atlanta.

I recall there being doubt because of two other undefeated teams that, frankly, lost when they shouldn't have. Maybe that was just ESPN hype, but I recall it taking the late defeats to seal the deal. But if others remember it taking no breaks in the last few games, I'm not going to argue it. I recall it differently.

RCS St. Louis: Top Offense
3. Hunter Johnson

Recruiting wrap: Johnson has several offers, including Notre Dame and Tennessee.

Performance: There's no question Johnson had the strongest arm of any quarterback in attendance at Sunday's camp, and as the day moved along, he showed he really knows how to use it effectively. When it comes to throws over the middle, he can fit the ball into tight windows and he rarely lets one fly that isn't a tight spiral. The one downfall for Johnson is that sometime he puts a little too much on the ball. Once he learns how and when to take some off and add some touch, he will be a special prospect.
