'17 IN QB Hunter Johnson (Former UT Commit 8/23/15) (Clemson commit)

He's also a top 5 player overall.

And he's getting outstanding reviews thus far in the Elite 11 camp. Barton Simmons has an article up on the 247Sports homepage. One thing I didn't know is that Johnson is going to compete in a dunk competition. Kid is athletic.

Wonder if he can dunk with Kongbo and Kmac bearing down on him.

He's not any good. DH4 and Josh told us he isn't.

Remind me why this kid left or we asked him to leave? Can't find any specifics or quotes from him, only speculation... Anyone have legit info other than "he just like Clemson better"? Maybe scared of JG competition?

We can't sell Clemson short. Their staff has great recruiters, and they recruited him hard. Clemson also just got done playing in the NC, and they are set-up to be successful for a long time. It's easy to sell yourself when you've proven to be successful. Additionally, their QB situation looks better. Johnson has the opportunity to be the guy after Watson. For UT, everyone expects JG to push for the starting job with Dormady in there as well. Based on what I've read from VQ and 247, the combination of these factors is the reason.

Sounds right to me. UT isn't always the best situation for everyone.

He didn't have a Clemson offer to consider before and apparently really liked them before. Some rumors that the thought of JG #1 dual threat in front and Lawrence in 2018 made him uneasy. I don't think Clemson had a 2016 QB or at least not a big one. Of course with our luck we aren't even getting Lawrence. Although I think the JG perfect fit for offense in front of him was the bigger deal.

He's not annointed the starter at Clemson when he walks on campus

And I wouldn't count out Isreal either. Might be short and only a 3 star, but all he did his senior year in HS was break Tebow's passing records and become one of only 27 to ever pass the 12,000 yard mark.
Tucker Israel on top all-time passers list, and climbing - Orlando Sentinel

Those are on campus and Chase Brice comes in with Johnson

So, the competition excuse is just that, an excuse. HJ visited Clemson and liked it.

I understand that most view the numbers a a predictor of ability - but how do these translate into how a player will do in an actual game where there is pressure to make the right decision in a split second with players twice your size bearing down on you to make a tackle?

Edited to add: If the line doesn't give a QB enough time to throw the ball or the receivers can't get open, it matters not how good or bad a QB is.

And I am not asking because I think he isn't good - it is just that I have watched high school players look really good in games and stand above and out play everyone, even those recognized as 3, 4 and 5 stars not get recruited because these numbers aren't good enough. How does proven ability on the field get weighed into all of this?

He will more than likely put up better numbers not having to play against SEC Defenses. The speed will not be there.

DW put up one of his best statistical games against y'all's conferences best D. You dumb.

Every kid can put some good numbers up against a good D every now and then and I don't argue he is really good. But, can Clempson do it every week in the SEC getting the crap knocked out of them every game? Not sure. They may not have the toughness to play in the SEC an entire season. ACC vs SEC - Type of tough games played, there is absolutely no comparison. The ACC is an extremely weak ass conference.

Just look at your schedule next season. It is pathetic.
