'17 IN QB Hunter Johnson (Former UT Commit 8/23/15) (Clemson commit)

Wow your second paragrapgh is a little shocking. It seems when a player decommitts from Tennessee, he is met with the obligatory statements like you have made. Along with ones like oh we are in on better players or we passed on him or we didnt want him anyway. Why is it that the same recruiting guys who rank Lawrence so high are right on him but they are wrong about Johnson?

Glad he signed with Clemson? Give me a break. Most if not all of us on this board were excited when HJ committed to UT. We gushed over his abilities and could not wait to have the number 1 QB. Now, in typical idiotic fashion, fans are talking like he is overrated and not worthy of his ranking. Good grief some of you need a clue. You can say you're glad the #1 QB committed elsehwere but you're fooling yourself. All HJ has done since committing to Clemson is get Rodgers and Higgins to commit with him and he is recruiting for them even more. Who do we have that is recruiting like crazy for us and bringing in serious talent? Here is a hint, nobody. Spin it how you want but losing HJ hurt.

BTW, if Lawrence is afraid of competition then I dont want him. I dont think he is personally and if we would have landed HJ, I dont think it would have affected his decision at all.

I'd have happily added HJ to our QB depth in a second. No brainer.

Ohhh, c'mon...I was under the impression that people tried really hard to like HJ because of his rankings and his commitment to the Vols. His QB play and stats never reflected his ratings. Some people on this board tried way too hard to justify his 3-4 interception games, but in all honesty I got the feeling that many shared the same sentiment as I did in that he was overrated.I did not expect him to stay and I had the same feeling other felt and even hoped he would leave.

At that time, our chances with Trevor Lawrence were much better. I would have felt bad if Hunter Johnson joined us, continued to recruit for us only to sit behind Guarantono and then have Trevor Lawrence take over afterwards. I truly felt he would never see the field. In fact, I think the possibility of us getting TL weighed into HJ looking elsewhere.

Finally, while I don't think Trevor is afraid of competition, I felt that it would be better if we prioritized him and told him we wanted him so much we wouldn't recruit anyone else. He could be the QB of the future. Normally, I would never endorse that view with HS players, but TL is simply that good. The next Peyton Manning in the making in my eyes.

Good thing Clemson doesn't run our offense

Keep talking. JG is a better athlete that fits Butch's offense. Who gives a sh*t about the kind of offense Clemson runs. If you think Johnson is better based off just a 5* ranking, you're going to be disappointed.

Random internet Vol fans evaluation or ALL the major recruiting services. I suppose if I have to trust one, I'll go with the multiple services saying he's not just good, But literally the best in the class. JMO

If he's the best QB in this years recruiting class, it must be a pretty damn weak one.

I'll be honest. I didn't really care when he committed/decommitted other than it was cool we were about to rack up JG, Hunter Johnson, and potentially an '18 stud.

Fastforward to now, yeah it stings. Not because he was going to be a star in our system, but because we seem absolutely cursed in recruiting since. The quality of players we're bringing in the class, on average, are not going to get us where we want to be.

It's easy to mock someone posting online by saying the coaches know how to evaluate better. Yeah that's true, the problem is the coaches aren't (yet) securing commitments from kids they've rated highly. We're getting leftovers. Hoping it changes this season, and some of these "takes" don't actually hold true.

There's at least 2 guys easily better than him. Davis Mills (Stanford commit) and Dylan McCaffrey (Michigan commit).

I personally have Davis Mills as the #1 QB in this class followed by Dylan McCaffrey.

Hunter Johnson is a distant third at best.

I am sure you would be saying the same thing if he would have kept his commitment.

Oh yea totally. He'd be riding the bench behind JG most of the time and would probably transfer after 2 or 3 years. I was not impressed with his game performance on film and that's my opinion. I've seen better QB's that's been rated way lower than Johnson.

Tone is a lot different in here, compared to page one.

He's got a lot of talent, and is going to a talented team. Odds are in his favor to succeed

It is interesting to go back and read how these things start vs how they end up. One of them around post #150 stuck out to me for an odd reason having zero to do with HJ. MEDVOL posted, "I like Turtles". LOL

Hunter Johnson is actually the poster "I like turtles". Makes sense now.

Do you disagree EricVol? It seems he played a part in Tee going to Clemson over UT.

Our WR production over the past couple of years has more to do with it than another recruit committed to a different school. Whether we like it or not, Clemson has a lot more to sell to a WR recruit than we do right now.

I think Johnson and Rogers played a role, but I think we are giving them too much credit. Plus, Higgins' recruitment is not over.

I will have to agree with you on this one. I don't know if anyone remembers but when HJ was committed he played in a game that was nationally televised. I remember watching the game hoping that we has going to just light it up since the team was not nationally ranked and I can't remember if they had some D1 talent or not. Here were the takeaways I had from this game:

1. Mechanically Johnson is very sound, he throws a good looking ball and he has a live arm. It's a live arm but does not have elite velocity.
2. He can throw a short route well but as it progressed from there it was sporatic.
3. He has decent movement in the pocket.
4. He craps his pants at the sight of any pressure which resulted in some horrendous decision making and led to multiple ints.

1 through 3 were impressive enough to get excited about his potential but it did not scream 5 star #1 overall QB talent, though with my orange blinders on I was trying my hardest to justify that he was. #4 was very concerning to me and is probably the reason why he does so well on the camp circuit but come game time in P5 football you will have consistent pressure, this trait will determine whether he is successful or not. This trait will also be very detrimental if the game is on the line and on your shoulders. If he can't get over it I don't him earning much playing time.

I believe that JG has a higher ceiling in that he ha shown that 1. He can handle the pressure 2. He has the ability to take over a game. All you have to do is look at his game against a stacked IMG team last year. Though they lost the kid showed grit, good decision making and the ability to put a team on his shoulders. I have yet to see that from HJ.
