'17 JUCO CB Keisean Nixon (South Carolina Commit 12/14/2016)

I think Labruzza and Corker would make a good pair of CB talents in this class. There are 2 others that I don't know much about already committed. Also, per 247, Cotman was projected to play WR or RB at UT, so I am not really sure how Nixon and Cotman are connected.

Cotman has said that he wants to play DB at the college level. Our staff apparently didn't think he projected that well at that position, wanted guys more experienced at playing the DB position, and our offensive staff didn't see a need or fit on offense. And we've got possibly 4 corners committed, not even including maybe adding Corker, with Labruzza, Bailey, Shamburger, & Theo Jackson. Jackson may be a safety tho, along with Gray.

Good point. We really didnt need Nixon and Corker. I think we told Nixon there is only one spot left and its not yours. Now if Corker goes elsewhere then it kinda sucks but still we have 4 committed.

Cotman was salty. That doesn't sound mutual.

Do you know this kid or something?

I didn't see the Scout article. 247 consistently reported that Cotman was a WR/RB prospect. His comment quoted in the Scout article doesn't make sense if he were going to play WR/RB. Either way, Callahan said it was mutual, but I agree, Cotman sounded salty.

HE never mentioned JUCO and the staff sure as hell didn't! (Against the rules). Some of you guys took that leap on your own because Nixon got an offer around the same timeline.

"Basically, they want experienced players instead of starting over with freshmen," Cotman told Scout when asked about his de-commitment from Butch Jones' program. "I'm good. I just know there's something better out there for me."

Scout

"Experienced" doesn't scream JUCO. It points to experience at the POSITION.

Exactly. Just because Butch said he wanted more experienced corners doesn't mean we were going the JUCO route. Cotman is a great athlete but lacks experience as a DB. Butch either wanted a guy who projects better as a DB or he was making room for another player who could help us, DB or not.

What have I invented?
Did we not turn down a young commit and turn our attention to Nixon? Did we not swing and miss on Nixon?

We don't KNOW why we cut Cotman loose. We have speculation, and his comment that they wanted someone more experienced. Which we took to mean juco at the time because the Nixon stuff popped up, but could mean just someone who has played corner more.

Regardless, this recruiting cycle isn't over. If we don't have a DB class to suit you then by all means point it out. It just isn't panic time because we don't know what the plan is.

This was my line of thinking too (as seen in my reply to Jay) but after seeing the comment specifically says they didn't want to start over with freshmen, that makes me question my original line of thinking.

Still think it's too early to say we didn't "win" these specific recruiting scenarios, as we don't know what the plan is.

Was waiting for 14jay, till I responded to that part. I chalk that up to anywhere from the experience portion being misconstrued in a secondhand quote or his recruiter softening the blow by hinting at such. Maybe the recruiter was asked about Nixon's offer and that's how it was justified? In any case, I don't buy "we're dumping you for a JUCO" was uttered before jumping onto the getaway motorcycle. :) If that was the strategy, why was Nixon the only community college product offered? And why weren't the uncommitted HS CBs' offers pulled? Maybe because they were more EXPERIENCED?

I was never for a juco DB. Never.
They rarely work out.
Yes I'm hung up on Cotman bc I feel like he's a better prospect than this guy is.

And the two are related bc the staff told cotman they were moving on from him in order to get a juco CB bc they needed immediate help.

I'd argue that more Freshman CBs find success than JuCo Transfer CBs do.

That's where my issue is with this failure (perceived or REAL depending on perspective) It's everything about this kids recruitment and losing an excellent Athlete in Cotman

I'm with you on this one Jay. I believe the facts are as you laid them out. Right after we began putting the full court press on Nixon we cut loose Cotman, one of our highest rated players. And then Cotman says his coach was contacted by our staff who told him we were going after JUCOs/a JUCO for immediate help.....it was a no brainer imo that they were referencing Nixon.....and now Nixon spurns is at the alter and we're left with neither player? That's no bueno.

Fortunately, there's still plenty of time to make up for the miscalculation. But it is what it is, a swing and a miss.

Except they didn't say they were going after a JUCO. They said they wanted more experience at CB. They want someone who has experience at CB...JUCO or High School. Cotman was not a CB in High School, therefore little to no experience at CB. He's projected as a CB.

I still wanted Nixon and hate that we didn't get him, but I don't believe the two events are related to each other as much as some are saying...if at all.

Agree to disagree......

Scout

Cotman was quoted as saying "instead of starting over with freshmen".

And Cotman isn't a member of the coaching staff, KB. Why would they confide their recruiting strategy to him? This was a "it's not you, it's me" thing.

I'm cool with disagreeing on the intricacies of it. I think we both agree it sucks that we didn't get Nixon.

Why not just wait till nixon commits before cutting cotman loose? Your logic is flawed.

Ill reserve my judgement until corkers decision i dont think we had room for both.

Let me rephrase my statement. I think it sucks that we didn't get Nixon, but if we get Corker then I really don't care.

Makes sense to me.

Wait, so you actually have responses in que waiting for people? Lol

My "logic"? I'm just following along where the evidence seems to go. Cotman is committed, we start recruiting JUCO Nixon, soon after Cotman is cut loose and says he's told it's because the staff wants more experienced players who can help immediately. I'm not involved here, just adding two and two. Not sure where the "flaw" is here.

There could be many things going on behind the scene that we may view losing Nixon as a loss while the staff is seeing as a win. I'll withhold my judgement until I see the whole class on NSD.

Nixon probably didn't want to get toasted vs JJ every day so he chose a place where it would happen only one day per year.

It's been explained to you and Jay by like 3 or 4 different posters.

You're right, that is exactly what it was. Honestly you may have just found the reason all of our CBs performed so poorly all year.. JJ wore them down during the week haha.
