'17 NC DE Matthew Butler (UT Signee)

DE: Kongbo, Mixon, Taylor, Austin Smith, McDaniel and Phillips.

DT: Vickers, McKenzie, Johnson, Picou, Bain, maybe Tuttle.

I feel a lot better about DE than I do DT, but honestly both positions aren't very deep and don't have much experience at either. I'm thinking that Smith, Mcdaniel and Taylor will all be able to put on some more weight. Hopefully Mcdaniel is already well on his way to doing that. Adding Crosby at DT, and who knows about Bennett. But we definitely need another 4 star type guy at each position that would be able to contribute next year, or we'll get sliced open like we did this year between the tackles.

This poor kid and the bates kid have had their college careers destroyed by injuries. Gotta feel for them

There are always players that seemingly cannot get and stay healthy. I hope that their physical issues get worked out regardless of their football careers.

I believe Blakley is considered a DE now...and my hope is that Mosley will be a full time DT...I feel pretty good with that depth chart plus what we're adding in this class...assuming my we hold on to everybody we have (except Lawson)...adding Butler would be nice as well

I thought Kyle Phillips and Kongbo did ok. They are not top 2 material but could provide decent depth. I think that we do also need both at DE too, so we definitely need to develop more depth at DT.

Those two will be our top guys at DE next year alongside Taylor. Can put them inside for certain packages, but they'll mostly be playing outside.

Never heard the Blakely to DE talk, but from the pictures and videos of practice the past couple days, it looks like Mosley is sticking at DT (at least for the bowl game).

Butch said several weeks ago (maybe even a couple of months ago) that they were planning to redshirt Blakely and that he might be moving to DE depending on how his body develops. It didn't seem like a sure thing IIRC.

I saw him in the GA HS title game last year when he played LB and he passes the look test. Built like a Vereen, but he's about 235 now.

#1 Performer at Shrine Bowl practice today...

The Alpha Dog -- DL Matthew Butler (North Carolina)

After a strong day one, Gerner, N.C. defensive lineman Matthew Butler was dominant at times during day two. The 6-foot-4, 260-pound prospect played both nose guard and defensive end in North Carolina’s three-man front. Bulter made plays consistently from both positions, and took over a stretch during the morning scrimmage. In fact, Butler might have been the most disruptive on Tuesday while playing over the center.

After racking up 65 tackles, 10 sacks & 20 TFL his junior year, Butler took his game to another level this year with 89 tackles, 25 sacks, 25 TFL & 32 QB hurries in 12 games. Garner HS doesn't count sacks as TFL so if the reported numbers are correct, 56% of Butler's tackles were for negative yardage.
